@starpowersmatv lol it has nothing to do with being disrespectful... i was pointing out that john mayer was inspired by this guy and i could see it in his music....

@Piitschii Do you understand the word "virtuoso", shitforbrains? It means someone who's mastered their craft to perfection. Joe Satriani is a virtuoso. That was great! At first I thought there was a B3 in the background, it really sounds like a Hammond organ. Can anyone tell me please what kind of guitar is that? Thanks for posting this vid!
It's an 8 string with I believe 2 bass strings at the top so he's playing guitar and bass. The organ tone is being caused by the Leslie cabinet which has rotating speakers .
That was cool, but it took it a while to sound good. It didn't start to sound like anything until aout a minute in, and it took me a minute to adjust to the leslie. overall, very cool though.
The tune is there.. but its improvised on.. the chords can be heard behind the angular, chromatic lines.. If it isnt your taste, i can dig it..but the cats can play!

Ok.... that was a interesting interpretation of the song. But msybe a little overkill. If you are looking for a more traditional aproach, check out my video of the song.
But I have to say that the tone took some getting used to- I mean, it sounds so organ-like much of the time. All in all, I prefer hearing a guitar sound that doesn't mimic an organ, as much as love organ jazz.
The fret board looks amazingly ergonomic actually. I have never seen Charlie Hunter before, but just looking at his axe, he obviously designed the bass with a completely natural hand position... pretty freakin' cool
The sound you're hearing is the use of stereo chorus unit. It simulates (to a certain degree) an old rotating cabinet. The warbling effect is used a lot with Hammond organs. It's only natural to hear other instruments in the genre use it too.
Have a listen to John Scofield's use of the chorus effect...you'll soon like it, But, just like any effect, it can be overused.
Take a look at that fretboard! the frets aren't parallel to one another - they're set in diagonally. Very bizarre.
it's coz the bass strings need wider fret distances to separate the notes....so what you see is the best of both worlds....if you think about it for a sec and look at it again you'll get what i mean
I saw Charlie (and Simon Lott) in Iowa City last week. He uses an Ampeg cabinet (not sure of the head) for his bass pickup and a Fender (perhaps a twin) for the guitar pickups. I didn't see any rotating cabinets.
(BTW: "the Picador" was a dump - and the patrons were drunken idiots for the most part. I felt embarrassed for Charlie...but I bet that's not the first time he's played for unruly morons)
Amazing. Real fun to watch, this was like my fifth time and I'm starting to sympathize with how it must feel to be able to play like this: bass and chords/lead at the same time.
I can do something similar on a Rhodes already; this type of finger coordination is really Something Else! :)
I favorited this video almost 2 years ago and I still come back to watch it at least once a week. Seriously one of the most amazing guitarists ever. Techinically superior with all the soul you could ask for. Very rare breed.
looking forward to having you play at Sullivan Hall. What a killer line up. Its going to be such a sick show... you and Deutsch, Tony Mason, Eric Biondo and Cochema Gastelum. Plus Otis Grove is such a great up and coming band. NICE!
Charlie Hunter is playing in Boston on December 7. He's doing a double bill with saxophonist Daniel Bennett at the Cambridge YMCA Theatre... if anyone is interested. I'm going.
because the majority of people dont know what real skill or talent is when it comes to music. and thank god because it makes it easier for us to get tickets :)
I don't think this gospel tune would work as well if it weren't for that tone. I didn't even think in terms of Hammond but it fits an organ sound. He doesn't do that on every song. These old gospels were written on organs.
dude, 1:35 to 1:38 has to be the coolest lick ive ever heard, and keepimg the bass going at the same time! man i cannot wait for this guy to come to town!!!!
Personally i think Charlie Hunter has come the closest i've heard to really impersonating a hammond organ sound. In terms of cornering scatting and playing as a george benson thing, benson rarely if ever uses his falsetto the way CH does. In my opinion, to regard originality on the surface analysis of "someone else did this once" then just about guitarist talking on this thing would be royally f***ed. Hunter's touch and approach are off-the-wall and fresh and his own voice shines through
Who designed his guitar? those slanted frets in order to meet the needs of bass and regular guitar fretting is quite brilliant. Got to love innovation and skill.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
somehow - i hear the crowd even in this video egging him on and cheering for ridiculous things- like scat singing Georbe Benson- or juggling a few bad sounding bass notes- cheer him for finding something original- that is the point. IF you cheer him for Hammond Organ tone and scat singing- Imagine if he really found an original thread- that is what the guitar vocabulary needs- not more Benson and Hammond- over and out- think about it froma a historic perspective.
i think the hammond organ and scat singing are pretty original dipshit... it sounds to me, amsterjam that you have the musical personality of am cardboard box. over and out
Dude screw you and your historic perspective. Guess what? Charlie Hunter's not only an amazing musician but a SHOWMAN! And as for an original thread, HE'S PLAYING AN 8-STRING GUITAR! And the complexity of his technique and his musical prowess is apparently far beyond anything you can understand. Over and out.
The funky sound of aHammond organ is very nice- when played on an actual Hammond Organ- by the likes of Jimmy Smith etc. CH has a long way to go. I simply think he is currently derivative and way off track- check back-; He will simplify- as he might yet approach originality- The George Benson Schtick is just not my thing- unless done by G.B- Now if i only could add 19 more strings or perhaps overdub (lol) chill- and start listening to Lou Reed.
I get the Jimmy smith sound from Jimmy Smith. I get the George Benson sound from George Benson. But geuss what, I get the CHARLIE HUNTER sound from geuss who? Charlie Hunter! You cannot judge music by calling his playing acrobatic and meaningless. He isn't trying to impress you with his skills, he just happens to be an awesome musician and plays what he wants to...
And I'm sorry but your last comment appalled me so much I have to make another response. You said that sounding like a hammond organ is a misdirection?? HOW CAN ANY MUSIC BE MISGUIDED WHATSOEVER?? Does ALL music have to go in the SAME direction?? The answer is NO!! The revival of the hammond organ sound is refreshing and is definitely not a misdirection. Do yourself a favor and try to be open minded about things before passing IGNORANT judgment on something you know nothing about.
Why emulate Hammond Organ? It is the vocabulary of GUITAR that needs to be developed- Trying to sound like a Hammond is silly during the era of sampling and I think it demostrates a misdirection- I went to see CH at Central Park '06? And it was even worse- than this- don't get me started- Back to the drawing board and let us hear touch of strings not the sound of Keyboard from 1957- very useless- But this is not a personal attack- I think he has potential- that is the point- stop playing bass
Ok, well you are entitled to your opinion, but there are many of us out here who like the sound of the hammond organ. I personally think his sound is innovative and hip. I live in New Orleans and he has pioneered a sound of fusion funk/jazz that is really popular around here. He has already reached his potential. You can't take Charlie Hunter and make him into what you want him to be, you have to like him for what he is. His unique guitar style is what makes him so special.
Ok first of all amsterjam, you have completely overlooked what Charlie is trying to emulate here. If you have ever read anything about him you'de know his style of playing and his tone is based around emulating a hammond organ (note the H&K Tube Rotosphere in his guitar). This man is an amazing guitar player and jazz guru. You obviously have a thing to learn from him considering you think his virtuosic playing is meaningless and irrelevant. Juggling bass/guitar? This man CONTROLS bass/guitar.
The guy's good - period. As much as we love to over-analyze this one particular performance (or the select few we've seen live), fact of the matter is - this guy's on the Jazz A-List, and getting better everyday. We should all hope to be as involved in cultural preservation in jazz (assuming we're all musicians here).
charlie hunter is a fucking virtuoso! have you ever attempted to play guitar and bass at the same time asswhole? not that easy! why don't who go listen to something that sounds cool and has no soul, like nickelback or system of a down fucker
i just realized that both of those negative comments were from the same person. i also realize that amster jam fuckhead probly can't play a real instrument cause hes too fucking busy beating off on guitar hero
very over rated- people become addicted to the hype- zero tone here- and last time i saw him- same thing- Charlie: less is more- or why not try 29 strings ? Acrobatics no longer interest me- If the juggler had something profound- he would not have to juggle? get it ? In art...less is always more. acrobatics and shred are meaningless.
awful.

Very bizarre.
subexpression 2 years ago
it's coz the bass strings need wider fret distances to separate the notes....so what you see is the best of both worlds....if you think about it for a sec and look at it again you'll get what i mean
fayekhelmi 2 years ago
I see what you mean.
I play both guitar and bass. Because of the string gauge, the intonation is different. Good observation.
subexpression 2 years ago
Actually, you're wrong. It is a real rotating speaker that Charlie was using here. He never plays through it these days.
dougwamble 2 years ago
How do you know?
I saw Charlie (and Simon Lott) in Iowa City last week. He uses an Ampeg cabinet (not sure of the head) for his bass pickup and a Fender (perhaps a twin) for the guitar pickups. I didn't see any rotating cabinets.
(BTW: "the Picador" was a dump - and the patrons were drunken idiots for the most part. I felt embarrassed for Charlie...but I bet that's not the first time he's played for unruly morons)
subexpression 2 years ago
Like I said, he never uses the Leslie anymore. For his guitar amp, it's a Fender Princeton-based amp made by Headstrong.

How do you know he's using a Leslie here?

LOL. That was a joke.

I don't think this gospel tune would work as well if it weren't for that tone. I didn't even think in terms of Hammond but it fits an organ sound. He doesn't do that on every song. These old gospels were written on organs.

yeah, John Mayer has learned a lot from Charlie, probably directly - Charlie co-wrote "In Repair" on Continuum ;) I think he plays on it, too

Amsterjam is clearly CH himself having a laugh with us.

that's the only explanation that makes any sense at all. even on youtube there's a certain level of lunacy that is obviously over the top...

Who designed his guitar? those slanted frets in order to meet the needs of bass and regular guitar fretting is quite brilliant. Got to love innovation and skill.
firstthought 3 years ago
It's a Novax guitar. As you can see, Ralph Novak is a very conservative luthier so it's a perfect fit for a master conformist as Charlie ;-)

he does what he does..yes influenced, but original, give him that! listen or don't. not for me.

i think the hammond organ and scat singing are pretty original dipshit... it sounds to me, amsterjam that you have the musical personality of am cardboard box. over and out
guitarboogiewoogie 3 years ago 5
Dude screw you and your historic perspective. Guess what? Charlie Hunter's not only an amazing musician but a SHOWMAN! And as for an original thread, HE'S PLAYING AN 8-STRING GUITAR! And the complexity of his technique and his musical prowess is apparently far beyond anything you can understand. Over and out.

Pprovo1 3 years ago 2
And I'm sorry but your last comment appalled me so much I have to make another response. You said that sounding like a hammond organ is a misdirection?? HOW CAN ANY MUSIC BE MISGUIDED WHATSOEVER?? Does ALL music have to go in the SAME direction?? The answer is NO!! The revival of the hammond organ sound is refreshing and is definitely not a misdirection. Do yourself a favor and try to be open minded about things before passing IGNORANT judgment on something you know nothing about.

Pprovo1 3 years ago
Hunter is a young guitarist w interesting potential-
but it is not yet realized- and may never be.
The simple idea of trying to do bass / guitar at the same time- is not new- it exists throught out the guitar hand jazz histoy-
Hunter is missing tone- core rudiment of muscianship.
Guarnteed that his direction will simplify-
Acrobatcs are basically meaninglesss-
CH slow down and listen-
Juggling bass/ guitar and whatever he can squeeze in there- is irrelevant.
vibrato / tone? - time will tell.
amsterjam66 3 years ago
Ok first of all amsterjam, you have completely overlooked what Charlie is trying to emulate here. If you have ever read anything about him you'de know his style of playing and his tone is based around emulating a hammond organ (note the H&K Tube Rotosphere in his guitar). This man is an amazing guitar player and jazz guru. You obviously have a thing to learn from him considering you think his virtuosic playing is meaningless and irrelevant. Juggling bass/guitar? This man CONTROLS bass/guitar.
Pprovo1 3 years ago
The guy's good - period. As much as we love to over-analyze this one particular performance (or the select few we've seen live), fact of the matter is - this guy's on the Jazz A-List, and getting better everyday. We should all hope to be as involved in cultural preservation in jazz (assuming we're all musicians here).
jaybodonoghue 3 years ago
I was very dissapointed in his playing -
very old fashioned and derrivative-
It is not new to juggle more old stuff at the smae time...
but add more strings and organ tone.
The arenas are always filled by morons cheering and whistling for more tricks-
didn't George Benson do this shtick already in 1977?
amsterjam66 3 years ago
charlie hunter is a fucking virtuoso! have you ever attempted to play guitar and bass at the same time asswhole? not that easy! why don't who go listen to something that sounds cool and has no soul, like nickelback or system of a down fucker

i just realized that both of those negative comments were from the same person. i also realize that amster jam fuckhead probly can't play a real instrument cause hes too fucking busy beating off on guitar hero
