hey im, a sophomore in highschool and i have been interested in becoming a Rescue Swimmer/AST for the United States Coast Guard and i was wondering if anybody can provide information about becoming one? because i have looked everywhere and cannot find anything. please any help would be great
Good!! If I reborn I would like to do it in the USA, take for sure I apply for rescue swimmer... I really wish to be a rescue swimmer , Im fast at swimming and Im strong for a woman... but 1 Im not a USA citizen and 2 my age...
You are guaranteed 4 years in the Navy, they are releasing many sailors if you are not giving 110%. Coast Guard has only 35,000 active, really hard to get into, and you are guaranteed 20+ years.
i really want to be a navy rescue swimmer im 14 and im working for it. i do have great respect for the coast guard as well- dont get me wrong but navy airr is my dream
@Zensitivebastard21 Just transfer out and become a Marine, the basic training alone is a much harder and more admirable challenge.. although i do give it to these rescue swimmers, they are some kickass dudes in the water.
@guitarplaya1234 Negative man one of my instructors at school was an ex Marine and right now I'm helping a friend transfer from the Marines into the Guard. I'm a Coastie and damn proud of it. I have all the respect to the Marines however and what they do.
@sable2100 actually there are 3 active female rescue swimmers in the CG and 1 more may have just graduated from the school recently but not certain. 2 more that are no longer in were female swimmers also
@KipJordy1 i assure you that ur under the age of 18 surfer buddies cant put these guys to shame bro. i work alongside these people, im an l.a county ocean lifeguard and both the coastguard and my lifeguarding ass have to rescue ur surfing buds every single day. stop talking shit... if u feel the need to, then go through their program.

@KipJordy1 your surfing girl scouts couldnt put these guys to shame to save there lives! you obviously know nothing about the U.S Coast Guard. semper paratus OORAH!
Just to remind everyone...The Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer program was patterned after the Navy's. In fact, they went thru Navy training until they stood up their own schoolhoouse
I plan on attending the Coast Guard Academy after I graduate high school. Is it possible for me to attend the A school while I'm in the Academy? Or do I have to graduate from there first?
@kampfschwimmer No, in the USCG only US citazins can apply for to become a rescue swimmer in the USCG. Btw that counts for every branch of the United States military.
Im 18 right now and am currently undertaking physical training on my own and in a weight training class for the fire academy here at Austin Tx. Ive signed up for my EMT already. But before I go job seeking at a station I wanted to do this program with the coast guard to get the extra ten points as a applicant at a station. Will this give me an advantage? Having already had a good portion of the medical and fire training?
Won't matter as EMT is not done until after AST school. You all go ahead and take all the junk you want, there have been over 5,000 that have tried to be rescue swimmers and when my son graduated 2 1/2 years ago he was number 348. If you really want to see if your fit enough to even try this school then first take the Red Cross' Ocean Life Guard Course. It is a rewarding job, but comes with a serious responsibility. Someone's life.
@jjajja12 No disrespect but if you only want to do the r.s. program with the coast guard to get some extra points to become a fireman your not going to make it through the program. Yeah some of the information you know because of your past training might help but the physical fitness you need to become a fireman and a r.s are too different things. This takes alot of time to do and your going to have to want it. Good luck to you and remember if you do it. Your making a commitment.
im PO cuz all my life i've wanted to be a navy SEAL or a rescue swimmer but i keep on getting injuries. Strained groin, strained shoulder and I pulled both of my hip flexors. Haven't played sports in more than a year. Been through PT twice
@dudewithhawk honestly I know what u meen i work out every day i swim almost every day i dive i try to narrow the odds of screwing up in A school . anyways good luck hope you make it I 16 going to volunteer at maybe 18 or a bit older...good luck though because its fuckn hard but if its what you really want then you will make it through
@MrPeanut28 Navy rescue swimmer school has more realistic drills, however that doesn't make it harder. either way both are highly trained rescue swimmers and both have the same cause. Plus, as a Navy rescue swimmer you are slightly less likely of getting a true SAR mission
@dudewithhawk same here with me but im pushing myself in the pool every day swimming with high schoolers. but i am a female and planning to become the 4th female rescue swimmer. strong hopes for both of us
Does anybody know if you can have hearing loss and still become a Rescue Swimmer/AST? i wear a hearing aid in my left ear if that helps

Sethersism 1 year ago
@Sethersism an average of 80% drop out/get kicked out of AST "A" school. Today there are about 320 rescue swimmers.
