Thanks for posting! I'm making up and writing a bunch of stories of how the TV show Monkees met and I'm posting them on Quizzella. I think I'll use this in the 'Mike meets Micky' story. If anyone wants to read some, here's a link! :-)
Issued statement reads due to "..irreconciliable differences...We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued support of The Monkees."
Actually, Peter is the most Musically Talented of all of them. Peter can play guitar, bass, piano, banjo, and flugelhorn. Peter IS a Musician who CAN Play.
Mike, Peter and Micky all played guitar. Peter was also a keyboard and banjo player. Micky learned the drums and actually became pretty good (I speak as a drummer on that!) Davy was mainly just a singer.
Hey Guys!! yeah you :D ! LIKE BOTH MONKEES AND BEATLES???? THEN............ Join the Club!!!! go to my channel BeatlesMonkees post on my wall or message me :D Come on guys.
Respond to this video... I watch this everyday on Antenna TV, I absolutely love The Monkees!!! It's always on before The Partridge Family, I m only 15 but I love old tv shows better than the ones on tv today(:
@flutterbug21 Ditto, I watch it every weekend on Antenna TV and usually stay around for the Partridge Family. I`m 17, absolutely love all the 60s shows and music!
Let's see if we can correct this. Lots of confusion...The original four Monkees included Jones, Nesmith, Dolenz, and Tork, only two of which were musicians. Tommy Boyce and "Hart" (first name?) wrote many of the Monkees hit songs. Boyce committed suicide following a lengthy illness many yrs after the Monkees broke up. The original Monkees are still alive.
@sonic10shadow I was born in '75, too late for the Monkees originally as well, but I became a fan during their 20 year reunion in 1986. They played them constantly on MTV and Nickelodeon. I was humiliated for liking something much older and silly. I think it's great that even younger generations are still not ashamed to love The Monkees, lol.
@sonic10shadow This is NOT "classic rock." This is ... I'm struggling here.....this is.....NOT "classic rock." This was a completely contrived package. They didn't sing, they didn't play. When they insisted on playing their own stuff, they bombed. This is NOT classic rock.
Well it's not classic rock per say, maybe oldies pop is the best way to describe it? Well their first two "playless" album were good, I am also a big fan of the next three, which they did play on. But I agree, not classic rock.
@Orvillestorage not quite true. they sang, and eventually played on their own albums still with a bunch of L.A. studio sharpshooter musicians. but yeah, it's weird to see them in real life, pushing 70 and whining about each other and trying to reclaim a past that didn't actually happen. if there weren't a tv, would those guys ever have even met, let alone be in a band?
@Orvillestorage You know little. You say what you want without knowing. Who are you to say they didn't SING ?. They sang on ALL their records. Do you call 'bombed' having just for starters TWO number one albums in the U.S.A. that they play on and write songs ?. (I'm talking about their 3rd & 4th albums AFTER their first 2 no.1 albums)
@TheKenfig They didn't sing on this video. When they insisted on doing their own stuff, they bombed. Up until their first self-produced record, they didn't play a note on anything. It's classic pop, and it was great stuff back in the day.
@Orvillestorage Didn't read a word I wrote did you ? This is nothing more than a demo for this song, which wasn't sold on records as The Monkees OR used in either of the two tv full series l the Monkees version was then used. As I say, THEY sang on ALL their records, which you said they didnt, and when they played loads on their 3rd album HEADQUARTERS, it went to no. 1 in the U.S. album charts and sold double multi platignum. Same for their 4th album P.A.C. & J ltd. - no.1 How is that 'bombed' ?
I'm with you man. I was born in '92 and practically live in this decade! So trust me, there others out there that our stuck in this generation that don't get enough credit for liking good music.
@sonic10shadow Don't listen to idiots who know not what they're talking about ; classic rock is whatever you want it to be. I remember the show first time around in the UK in 1967 & 68 when as young as 4 & 5 years old on our black and white tv set !. It was repeated many times in the 70s and 80s though
@sonic10shadow I understand, I'm the exact same age. This was considered contrived in it's age. The Monkees were a fabricated band, but showed talent over time.
Love This Song!!! Thanks for the post. I Post a load of these old classics on my Channel " TOMA'S TIMELESS TUNES" I'd love you to stop by and give a listen...I subscrided to your channel, hope you do the same for me. Thanks and see you soon. Tommy Toma
Ha! I played a tennis racquet guitar when they got their start. I'm now 51, play regularly in north SanDiego county. Great memories. Thanks Mike, Davy, Peter and Mickey!
I don't know which is Tommy Boyce, he may have been an original before the show. I never heard of a Monkee committing suicide and I grew up LOVING them.
I hung with Tommy in the late eighties, early nineties...he truly was a nice guy. Had his share of problems like us all, but couldn't seem to tame them. RIP Tommy.
This title sequence was shown ONLY in the unaired version of the pilot episode, 'cookmore'; the "regular" title was used when this first aired in November 1966 (apparently, NBC insisted on scheduling another episode- "Royal Flush"- as the "premiere episode"...and it won an Emmy for director James Frawley).
@tony20add : *sigh* Peter's been my favorite since I was 3, but I have also had a bit of a soft spot for Mr. Save The Texas Prairie Chicken, too. Amazing lyricists & songwriters, both of them, with incredible playing skills, I just wish that they'd play nice with one another and get another tour together.
@shandamoon That really appears to be either a gas or electric powered skateboard. At 4-5 seconds, Mike appears to have a throttle control in his left hand and some sort of wire or cable seems to briefly appear next to his left leg ! Hmmmm..Interesting !!
i liked them all and i know all of them are at least some what talented.. Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork especially and Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz could sing for sure. this intro is different for sure .
@Berialavrenti lol I know they did kinda rip off the Beatles.. but they both met at one point during their careers and got on really well. You can even see Mike in the Day in the Life music vid with John <3
I'm a Beatles fan too, but I was only 11 when they hit US and couldn't see them live. Saw Monkees live though. Check CD Universe if you would like to buy Monkess episode DVD's. 8/15/09
Thanks for posting this, I never saw this version. I love them, used to watch them everyday after school. It came on just before the Brady Bunch, ah, those were the days:)
one time peter wasmy dads server in LA but peter was 40 then so hes probably 59 now that was in 1990.the monkees are my favorite ihave there songs onmy phone. i listen to them every day. their awesome.someone gotomy page pls.
@Libramoon77 : I learned how to read from TV commercials when I was 20 mos. old, and the elder "sisters" would watch the Monkees reruns (I was born in '70, so this was prolly '72-'73), both SLOBBERING over Davy, but for me, it was ALWAYS Peter, with Mike nearly tied. Nearly. Granted, I was 3 y ears old, but I could tell, even then, that Pete was the LEAST like his "character," 'cause he sure as hell wasn't any "dummy."
yeah, I saw it on an "entertainment tonight - remembering and tribute" segment. One of Boyce and Hart withdrew from this life. I'll look it up and find out more for ya.
After a stint living in the UK, Tommy Boyce returned to live in Nashville, Tennessee, where he struggled with depression, and later suffered a brain aneurysm. In 1994, Boyce died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
yeah, it was a shock to me too when I first heard it.
I met Vance Brescia last year. He wrote The Monkees comeback hit "That was then , this is now". Vance came to my show earlier in the day ... I went to his show (Herman's Hermits) that night ... then it was dinner for all...lol.
@drummerkid71 This is very sad news, I really didn't know that. When I was at school (in the 60's) The M's were my fav band, I preferred them over The Beatles. But which one is Tommy Boyce, or what instrument did he play?
@Strizzdiddy616 I actually saw a documentary on 60's artists and they said the same thing. They said "self inflicted injuries causing death"...A more polite way of saying he committed suicide I guess. Still pretty sad. Once I find out which documentary it was I'll send you a link. It's pretty interesting to know who gave in and who survived the times.
There's a reason why the theme and title sequence were changed for the series- this version does sound a bit too "relaxed"; when the "real" group recorded it for the weekly show, the tempo was increased accordingly.
I think that when they aired the pilet episode during the st season they should have played this intro. if micky singing didn't match up (because of the timing)then just this voices to but still. lol
I like the blocking of the shot where Mike (or his stunt double) skates across the street. Watch the 2 people who cross in front of him trying to carefully time their steps so they meet him at the right time - very natural looking :-).
they should've used that "Whew! and now for our story" for every episode .... wouldve been a good shot to use the episode title and who it was written by ...... nevermind. haha
The Monkees found out that qualudes weren't that effective for their pilot intro, so they switched to speed for the rest of the intros during the show's run.
Well, that sucked dick. Thank God they changed it.

I was born in 1977,and I grew up on the re-runs. My mom said that when I was 2, I'd hear the the show intro, run into the room and start dancing.
Libramoon77 3 years ago 26
Oh yeah! Born in 75 here and would love watching these re-runs....along with Banana Splits!!! Yeah!!!!
islandbee 2 years ago
@Libramoon77 : I learned how to read from TV commercials when I was 20 mos. old, and the elder "sisters" would watch the Monkees reruns (I was born in '70, so this was prolly '72-'73), both SLOBBERING over Davy, but for me, it was ALWAYS Peter, with Mike nearly tied. Nearly. Granted, I was 3 y ears old, but I could tell, even then, that Pete was the LEAST like his "character," 'cause he sure as hell wasn't any "dummy."

@Libramoon77 I admire your mom! She must have beend a very fine lady! Congratulations !!!

which one committed suicide ...Boyce or Hart?
drummerkid71 3 years ago
Gee whiz, I didn't know either one did. If they did. Where'd you hear that?
sarame287 3 years ago
yeah, I saw it on an "entertainment tonight - remembering and tribute" segment. One of Boyce and Hart withdrew from this life. I'll look it up and find out more for ya.
drummerkid71 3 years ago
This is a quote from Wikipedia:
After a stint living in the UK, Tommy Boyce returned to live in Nashville, Tennessee, where he struggled with depression, and later suffered a brain aneurysm. In 1994, Boyce died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
drummerkid71 3 years ago 6
Oh. Huh, I didn't know that.
sarame287 3 years ago
yeah, it was a shock to me too when I first heard it.
I met Vance Brescia last year. He wrote The Monkees comeback hit "That was then , this is now". Vance came to my show earlier in the day ... I went to his show (Herman's Hermits) that night ... then it was dinner for all...lol.
drummerkid71 3 years ago
@sarame287 huh, gee whizz, I tell you what, let me just say... nor did I.

@drummerkid71 This is very sad news, I really didn't know that. When I was at school (in the 60's) The M's were my fav band, I preferred them over The Beatles. But which one is Tommy Boyce, or what instrument did he play?
stafylides 1 year ago
@drummerkid71 Wow that is really sad
MegaCrazycatt 1 year ago
@drummerkid71 Wikipedia can be edited by any one so theirs a chance that was made up.
Strizzdiddy616 1 year ago
@Strizzdiddy616 I actually saw a documentary on 60's artists and they said the same thing. They said "self inflicted injuries causing death"...A more polite way of saying he committed suicide I guess. Still pretty sad. Once I find out which documentary it was I'll send you a link. It's pretty interesting to know who gave in and who survived the times.

@drummerkid71 do u really have to post this -.-

@ApriCot47 that one of them committed suicide..i don't want to know such things about my childhood heros :D

@drummerkid71 ,
Tommy Boyce shot himself in 1994, very sad.
mrjim271 1 year ago

C'est passé il n'y a pas longtemps en France , c'est du pur déliiiiiiire ^^ hey hey ! we're all little monkees :D Coooool !
titigrette 3 years ago
J'ai entendu dire qu'ils n'étaient pas très populaires en France. C'est juste?
sarame287 3 years ago
titigrette 3 years ago
sarame287 3 years ago
There's a reason why the theme and title sequence were changed for the series- this version does sound a bit too "relaxed"; when the "real" group recorded it for the weekly show, the tempo was increased accordingly.
fromthesidelines 3 years ago
I think that when they aired the pilet episode during the st season they should have played this intro. if micky singing didn't match up (because of the timing)then just this voices to but still. lol

ok where in the world can i get the first season of the monkees TV show??? i have looked every where and no one has it. Are they out yet or what??
PinkMomentProduction 3 years ago
You can find it on the Rhino website or on Ebay, maybe Amazon.
sarame287 3 years ago
It sounds so much slower! (Or maybe I'm just crazy...) But that's okay. ^^
So cute! XD Thanks for the upload! =3
TakoYakiAsagi 3 years ago
I think it is slower. :) Welcome....
sarame287 3 years ago
I like the blocking of the shot where Mike (or his stunt double) skates across the street. Watch the 2 people who cross in front of him trying to carefully time their steps so they meet him at the right time - very natural looking :-).
uebergeek 3 years ago
How about the rest of them? You don't think they really let those guys play on the records?
Not.

they should've used that "Whew! and now for our story" for every episode .... wouldve been a good shot to use the episode title and who it was written by ...... nevermind. haha
eric829 3 years ago
The Monkees found out that qualudes weren't that effective for their pilot intro, so they switched to speed for the rest of the intros during the show's run.
