  • Well, that sucked dick. Thank God they changed it.

  • They are not "magic wands"! They are a drumstick made out of aluminum with a plastic tip.

  • Oopsies... just tried my link to see if it works, it dosn't... If you search it, do this: Go to Quizella.com, and in the search thingy at the top, type Fangirl62 and one of my random Monkee quizes will come up. To find the stories, just click on my profile name :)

  • quizilla.teennick.com/my/stuff

  • Thanks for posting! I'm making up and writing a bunch of stories of how the TV show Monkees met and I'm posting them on Quizzella. I think I'll use this in the 'Mike meets Micky' story. If anyone wants to read some, here's a link! :-)

  • This isn't the monkees singing is it?

  • SLOW....

  • This was pretty cool, but I never saw this one before. Did they ever show it? If so, I must have missed it.

  • @Lacroix67 They did. On they're Pilot episode. The episode that started the series.

  • i prefer the grungies theme XD but that's ok XD

  • Gorillaz needs A t.v. Show, you Know it's Tradition.

  • The Outnumbered version of this is so much better :D

  • DAVY LOOKS LIKE A FISH OUT OF WATER PLAYING THAT GITAR LIKE A FAKE ASS DANNY PARTRIDGE....AND PILOT WAS SORRY

  • Theme song on downers.

  • My little girlfriend liked these guys when we were little kids, funny.

    William and the Blues Jammers.

  • they got so fed up with criticism about them not really playing on the records, they vowed to learn the instruments...lol.

  • i used to sing this in the car when i was 5... i didn't know all the words then...

but now, i'm in high school, still love this song, and now know all the words :)

  • Boy, that's low-energy compared to the real theme.

  • 1. This is a promo, not a theme from the pilot.

    2. This is sung by Boyce and Hart.

  • i love mike <3 and im 13

  • Its the original Big Time Ruah!

  • im only 14 yrs old i think the monkees are good singer there next to the beatles in my mind :)

  • Newsflash, Aug.8, 2011:

Remaining dates for 45th Anniv. tour cancelled.

Issued statement reads due to "..irreconciliable differences...We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued support of The Monkees."

  • Pilot Filmed Nov. 13-23, 1965.

  • @PotterMarauder Hey sorry I know this is random but I am a Monkees and Harry Potter fan too lol

  • i wish i had been born in this decade instead of 30 years later...

  • Hope Antenna TV plays this Pilot episode soon!

I Want to see this classic, groudbreaking footage!

  • Actually, Peter is the most Musically Talented of all of them. Peter can play guitar, bass, piano, banjo, and flugelhorn. Peter IS a Musician who CAN Play.

  • Wasn't Mike Nesmeth the only one who could really play an instrument?

  • @vcomp1960 I think Tork could, too, but not as talented as Nesmith.

  • @vcomp1960

Mike, Peter and Micky all played guitar. Peter was also a keyboard and banjo player. Micky learned the drums and actually became pretty good (I speak as a drummer on that!) Davy was mainly just a singer.

  • Their hair became Beatles' hair a few months or years later. The BEATLES!

  • I love 60s music and I'm a HUGE fan of The Beatles, but I just don't like The Monkees. I like the tv show though :)

  • Check out that crazy skateboard in the begining!

  • I'm glad they decided to speed it up.

  • I'm 19 and the Monkees are one of my favorite bands.

  • I was born in 1987; and was obsessed with this show as kiddo, my mom would always watch it cause she loved them too! Still love it at 23 years :)

  • Monday, September 12, 1966, 7:30pm EST--The Beginning of MonkeeMania!

  • Does anyone notice Micky has magic wands as his drum sticks ? !

  • @money0395 Those are not magic wands, that is what some drumsticks looked like in the 1960s

  • This intro almost looks like something out of the '50s; Davy Jones looks like he's humping his guitar!

  • Respond to this video... I watch this everyday on Antenna TV, I absolutely love The Monkees!!! It's always on before The Partridge Family, I m only 15 but I love old tv shows better than the ones on tv today(:

  • @flutterbug21 yay me too!!

  • @flutterbug21 Ditto, I watch it every weekend on Antenna TV and usually stay around for the Partridge Family. I`m 17, absolutely love all the 60s shows and music!

  • mickey Dolenz was sooooooooooooo my fabvorite!!!!!

  • Let's see if we can correct this. Lots of confusion...The original four Monkees included Jones, Nesmith, Dolenz, and Tork, only two of which were musicians. Tommy Boyce and "Hart" (first name?) wrote many of the Monkees hit songs. Boyce committed suicide following a lengthy illness many yrs after the Monkees broke up. The original Monkees are still alive.

  • @CoachCaputa 1) Bobby Hart 2) They both sang the pilot 3) Yes he did committed suicide in 1994. 4) They are on tour right now without Mike Nesmith.

  • @sonic10shadow YAY AGAIN!!

  • @sonic10shadow I was born in '75, too late for the Monkees originally as well, but I became a fan during their 20 year reunion in 1986. They played them constantly on MTV and Nickelodeon. I was humiliated for liking something much older and silly. I think it's great that even younger generations are still not ashamed to love The Monkees, lol.

  • @sonic10shadow and you like sonic too ? YOUR EPIC!

  • @sonic10shadow This is NOT "classic rock." This is ... I'm struggling here.....this is.....NOT "classic rock." This was a completely contrived package. They didn't sing, they didn't play. When they insisted on playing their own stuff, they bombed. This is NOT classic rock.

  • @Orvillestorage

Well it's not classic rock per say, maybe oldies pop is the best way to describe it? Well their first two "playless" album were good, I am also a big fan of the next three, which they did play on. But I agree, not classic rock.

  • @toasteroven427 So, it's classic pop then. Classic rock is whatever you want it to be and The Monkees can come under 'rock music'

  • @Orvillestorage not quite true. they sang, and eventually played on their own albums still with a bunch of L.A. studio sharpshooter musicians. but yeah, it's weird to see them in real life, pushing 70 and whining about each other and trying to reclaim a past that didn't actually happen. if there weren't a tv, would those guys ever have even met, let alone be in a band?

  • @Orvillestorage You know little. You say what you want without knowing. Who are you to say they didn't SING ?. They sang on ALL their records. Do you call 'bombed' having just for starters TWO number one albums in the U.S.A. that they play on and write songs ?. (I'm talking about their 3rd & 4th albums AFTER their first 2 no.1 albums)

  • @TheKenfig They didn't sing on this video. When they insisted on doing their own stuff, they bombed. Up until their first self-produced record, they didn't play a note on anything. It's classic pop, and it was great stuff back in the day.

  • @Orvillestorage Didn't read a word I wrote did you ? This is nothing more than a demo for this song, which wasn't sold on records as The Monkees OR used in either of the two tv full series l the Monkees version was then used. As I say, THEY sang on ALL their records, which you said they didnt, and when they played loads on their 3rd album HEADQUARTERS, it went to no. 1 in the U.S. album charts and sold double multi platignum. Same for their 4th album P.A.C. & J ltd. - no.1 How is that 'bombed' ?

  • @sonic10shadow

I'm with you man. I was born in '92 and practically live in this decade! So trust me, there others out there that our stuck in this generation that don't get enough credit for liking good music.

  • @sonic10shadow Don't listen to idiots who know not what they're talking about ; classic rock is whatever you want it to be. I remember the show first time around in the UK in 1967 & 68 when as young as 4 & 5 years old on our black and white tv set !. It was repeated many times in the 70s and 80s though

  • @sonic10shadow cool story bro.

  • if people only liked only one genre of music it would be a preaty fucking boring world

  • @sonic10shadow I understand, I'm the exact same age. This was considered contrived in it's age. The Monkees were a fabricated band, but showed talent over time.

  • Soon as I saw this I thought 'Friends'.

I loved the Monkees as a kid but it's a bit pathetic that we don't seem to have progressed after more than 40 years.

  • I love them but dont link them with the Beatles thats like comparing Real Madrid to accrington stanley

  • I still love them!

  • Love This Song!!! Thanks for the post. I Post a load of these old classics on my Channel " TOMA'S TIMELESS TUNES" I'd love you to stop by and give a listen...I subscrided to your channel, hope you do the same for me. Thanks and see you soon. Tommy Toma

  • too BEATLES-OUT... I like the second one better. but i like the Monkees, so i have to thumbs up...

  • I was mad about the non-Monkee voices until I read that it was Boyce and Hart. I can dig that. :)

  • Nice video man, i like it.

  • Hello, wanna be friends ?

Send me a pm and i'll help you with stuff like uploading, promoting your video, getting more viewers etc..

    Hit me back !

  • Wow....never saw this intro...GREAT stuff...thanks

  • When i was a kid i watched the Monkees every Saturday morning in 1967.What night did the Monkees TV show come on?

  • groovy, thanks for posting. any chance you could post the upbeat version of "i wanna be free," which was also on the pilot episode?

  • Ha! I played a tennis racquet guitar when they got their start. I'm now 51, play regularly in north SanDiego county. Great memories. Thanks Mike, Davy, Peter and Mickey!

  • I don't know which is Tommy Boyce, he may have been an original before the show. I never heard of a Monkee committing suicide and I grew up LOVING them.

  • "Mr. Terrific"and then "The Monkees," 1966.

  • I hate to say this. But, this version blows big time. No wonder they went with the other version. The Monkees still rule today !!!!

  • I hung with Tommy in the late eighties, early nineties...he truly was a nice guy. Had his share of problems like us all, but couldn't seem to tame them. RIP Tommy.

  • Great VIDEO. Thank-YOU. LOVE, Grandmafottz.XXXOOO

  • dude, i'm almost 13 and my mom got me hooked on this show. then i got my friend hooked on this show...

  • This title sequence was shown ONLY in the unaired version of the pilot episode, 'cookmore'; the "regular" title was used when this first aired in November 1966 (apparently, NBC insisted on scheduling another episode- "Royal Flush"- as the "premiere episode"...and it won an Emmy for director James Frawley).

  • Mike Nesmith...enough said :)

  • @tony20add : *sigh* Peter's been my favorite since I was 3, but I have also had a bit of a soft spot for Mr. Save The Texas Prairie Chicken, too. Amazing lyricists & songwriters, both of them, with incredible playing skills, I just wish that they'd play nice with one another and get another tour together.

  • im sorry buty i dont want comercialisaed bands in the hall of fame what about the kinks

  • @acciesfan8 my bad the kinks are already in there

  • OKAY...I confess...when everyone ELSE was hot for Davy and Mickey I was lusting after Mike and his hat!!!

  • I remember this serie in black and white spanish television already 1970!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think it is funny how the people who hired The Monkees wanted them to be a copy of The Beatles and ended up with something equally awesomex3

  • ARRRRR I REMEMBER THIS IT WAS GRAND

  • That was the perfect edit at :17 with Peter looking like a monkey face when they sing "and people say we monkey around". :)

  • Was this actually played when it was on the first time on television?

I have only seen their regular intro they always played.

  • Sigh . . .Davie. Enough said. I had such a crush on him!!

  • Mike looks so cool boarding along...

  • @shandamoon That really appears to be either a gas or electric powered skateboard. At 4-5 seconds, Mike appears to have a throttle control in his left hand and some sort of wire or cable seems to briefly appear next to his left leg ! Hmmmm..Interesting !!

  • 0:36-0:40 he's humping his guitar :D roflmao!

  • no pues estos chavos

    eran la mera neta

    no me canso de escuchar

    sus canciones en especial

i'am a believer y el te ma de los monkees

    lastima q es siempre

    cuando ando de la verde

    buu...!!

    pero q vivan los monkees!!!

  • Sweet...this is pretty rare...thanks for the post.

  • i liked them all and i know all of them are at least some what talented.. Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork especially and Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz could sing for sure. this intro is different for sure .

  • Is Mike skateboarding? I didn't even know skateboarding was even that well known until the early 70s.

  • Nope..skateboarding in the 60's. (Steel wheels!)

  • @Berialavrenti lol I know they did kinda rip off the Beatles.. but they both met at one point during their careers and got on really well. You can even see Mike in the Day in the Life music vid with John <3

  • I always thought Peter was so cute!

  • they always used the best guitars, always...

  • You can see why they got session musicians in to play the tricky bits. Great post though.

  • dad loves dis song

  • Rare.

    Love it.

The Monkees and the show just gets better with time.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • i just watched about 5 episodes of their Tv Series....i loved it!! they are soo funny!

  • I'm a Beatles fan too, but I was only 11 when they hit US and couldn't see them live. Saw Monkees live though. Check CD Universe if you would like to buy Monkess episode DVD's. 8/15/09

  • I never knew that existed. Interesting.

  • Wow! That was like different! But it was cool!

  • very rare good post. Thank you

  • I was born in 61 have vivid memorios in blk and white tv of the monkees.

  • theyre so cute :)

  • Thanks for posting this, I never saw this version. I love them, used to watch them everyday after school. It came on just before the Brady Bunch, ah, those were the days:)

  • how old r u?

  • I was born in 1970:)

  • @jessabelstev me too! Those WERE definitely the greatest memories.

  • @jessabelstev yes they were! right there with ya

  • This song is so catchy and good!!!!!

  • I already got the correct reply. It was circus boy. You can see a clip on youtube.

  • FAIL

  • omg Davy looks sooo young in this!

  • I was born in 1977,and I grew up on the re-runs. My mom said that when I was 2, I'd hear the the show intro, run into the room and start dancing.

  • Oh yeah! Born in 75 here and would love watching these re-runs....along with Banana Splits!!! Yeah!!!!

  • @Libramoon77 : I learned how to read from TV commercials when I was 20 mos. old, and the elder "sisters" would watch the Monkees reruns (I was born in '70, so this was prolly '72-'73), both SLOBBERING over Davy, but for me, it was ALWAYS Peter, with Mike nearly tied. Nearly. Granted, I was 3 y ears old, but I could tell, even then, that Pete was the LEAST like his "character," 'cause he sure as hell wasn't any "dummy."

  • @Libramoon77 I admire your mom! She must have beend a very fine lady! Congratulations !!!

  • Does anyone know what tv show Mickey was in when he was a child?

  • it was circus boy.

  • Comment removed

  • which one committed suicide ...Boyce or Hart?

  • Gee whiz, I didn't know either one did. If they did. Where'd you hear that?

  • yeah, I saw it on an "entertainment tonight - remembering and tribute" segment. One of Boyce and Hart withdrew from this life. I'll look it up and find out more for ya.

  • This is a quote from Wikipedia:

After a stint living in the UK, Tommy Boyce returned to live in Nashville, Tennessee, where he struggled with depression, and later suffered a brain aneurysm. In 1994, Boyce died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

  • Oh. Huh, I didn't know that.

  • yeah, it was a shock to me too when I first heard it.

I met Vance Brescia last year. He wrote The Monkees comeback hit "That was then , this is now". Vance came to my show earlier in the day ... I went to his show (Herman's Hermits) that night ... then it was dinner for all...lol.

  • @sarame287 huh, gee whizz, I tell you what, let me just say... nor did I.

  • @drummerkid71 This is very sad news, I really didn't know that. When I was at school (in the 60's) The M's were my fav band, I preferred them over The Beatles. But which one is Tommy Boyce, or what instrument did he play?

  • @drummerkid71 Wow that is really sad

  • @drummerkid71 Wikipedia can be edited by any one so theirs a chance that was made up.

  • @Strizzdiddy616 I actually saw a documentary on 60's artists and they said the same thing. They said "self inflicted injuries causing death"...A more polite way of saying he committed suicide I guess. Still pretty sad. Once I find out which documentary it was I'll send you a link. It's pretty interesting to know who gave in and who survived the times.

  • @drummerkid71 do u really have to post this -.-

  • @ApriCot47 do I really have to post what???

  • @ApriCot47 that one of them committed suicide..i don't want to know such things about my childhood heros :D

  • @drummerkid71 ,

Tommy Boyce shot himself in 1994, very sad.

  • @drummerkid71 Tommy Boyce. I did not know that either.

  • @drummerkid71 Neither.. Boyce Got Shot!!!

  • This was actually Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart singing. I just saw it on "The Biography Channel".

  • It is. I saw it on the bts on the season discs.

  • There's a reason why the theme and title sequence were changed for the series- this version does sound a bit too "relaxed"; when the "real" group recorded it for the weekly show, the tempo was increased accordingly.

  • I think that when they aired the pilet episode during the st season they should have played this intro. if micky singing didn't match up (because of the timing)then just this voices to but still. lol

  • Milli Vanilli?

  • ok where in the world can i get the first season of the monkees TV show??? i have looked every where and no one has it. Are they out yet or what??

  • You can find it on the Rhino website or on Ebay, maybe Amazon.

  • It sounds so much slower! (Or maybe I'm just crazy...) But that's okay. ^^

So cute! XD Thanks for the upload! =3

  • I think it is slower. :) Welcome....

  • I like the blocking of the shot where Mike (or his stunt double) skates across the street. Watch the 2 people who cross in front of him trying to carefully time their steps so they meet him at the right time - very natural looking :-).

  • How about the rest of them? You don't think they really let those guys play on the records?

    Not.

  • I have never seen this before--just great

  • WOW..I had never seen this before.What a treasure!!

  • LOL they are so cute here!!

  • they should've used that "Whew! and now for our story" for every episode .... wouldve been a good shot to use the episode title and who it was written by ...... nevermind. haha

  • The Monkees found out that qualudes weren't that effective for their pilot intro, so they switched to speed for the rest of the intros during the show's run.

  • With quadludes do you mean make it sound like fun not the blues?

  • He was only joking.

  • Boyce and Hart sound somewhat like The Beach Boys.
