How is a crappy, lame TV advert a worthy candidate to represent British Comedy?

I'm talking about the classics as well as a lot of the modern stuff (research it, I'm not going to sit here naming shows you probably won't know).

Looking at some of the top comedies in American comedies like The Simpsons, 2 & 1/2 Men, Everybody Loves Raymond etc. they are all filled with cliches that a majority of Brits will see as techniques we used 10-20 years ago.
