the anger evinced by many at this video is to me quite inexplicable, except with reference to a infantile father projection and derelict rage at the withdrawn nipple.
Trust me, I could bear not watching this ever again.
This is pathetic, this is much more like "MY Cousin, My Gastroenterologist"
Don't take DFW in vain, now go start worshiping your authentic creative abilities and make something novel rather than numbing. Maybe you should take yourself a little more seriously: get in touch with your outer- adult.
irony. how dull. you should read DFW on the closed system that irony is. and stop wasting your time reprocessing images without really altering their context. no-one is watching, this is not clever or funny. maybe try doing something sincere. thats the DFW challenge.
you're only saying this because you want to be seen as someone who "got" what dfw was trying impress upon the reader, since he is always talking about how ij is supposed to be incredibly sad, yet however it is one of the funniest books I've ever read, along with being sad but the funny overwhelms the sad.
@FierceSwitters Whether one overwhelms another depends on the reader. But if you really look at what the whole thing's talking about, it's that irony is sad. I'm not disagreeing with you or anything; I think any argument about whether it's more funny or more sad misses the point. The fact that they're the same thing; that's non-obvious, and to me seems more interesting to think about.
the fact that it's really funny is a big part of the irony in the book.
when I re-read the book I always read it as if I am getting to know a very witty person, better and better, and then getting to know him/her so well that I see what a sad person they are.
I get a different kind of feeling. The way the book so frequently looks at boundary areas, like between irony and sadness or mathematics and language, it makes me feel like the entire thousand page behemoth is kind of converging on just one idea, like it's illuminating the connections between everything. Like he always said the problem with thinking is you get one thought with a whole bunch of facets or components all at once and have to relate them one by one, which takes ages
anyone who says someone smells "like a stinky butt" definitely missed the point of Infinite Jest. Anyone who makes a video like this missed the point of Infinite Jest, by the longest and farthest width. You can't even begin to comprehend where to look for the point, bud.
there is an off chance that DFW would have found this funny.
