  • my dream was always to see her in public. I even tried to get them to bring her here to our bluegrass festivals. I guess she is worth a fortune. I'll have to keep watching youtube i guess.

  • She could never do wrong on anything she sings. She will always be my favourite female bluegrass singer.

  • @2bluegrassbabe me too. the only problem is that as she has got more famous--it is more difficult to see her live. she has become a bluegrass diva.

  • Nice non syncopated Bluegrass.

  • obviously the haircut wasn't the best back then, but honestly, allison has always been cute. and always had an angel voice.

  • I love Alison and her band, if some dont like their music l will pray for them.

  • An appropriate song for Sunday morning :-)

  • there are angels on earth

  • sweetest voice I have EVER heard.

  • Heaven's Bright Shore shines gloriously with this vibrating voice.

  • THANK YOU JESUS. AMEN

  • I love her voice, but compared to when this came out and now I have but one thing to say. Thank God for image consultants!!!!

  • @anyamarie9 get off of barry's ass. some people are thin--it is just a genetic thing. actually-barry has been with the band for longer than any member--so he must have some good qualities. i am not preaching to the choir-- but it sounds like you are a big fatty--with no talent, barry has so much talent--he does not have to answer to you.

  • @1pupblacky it's an observation....get off your "pedie" this was always a great band as is the "newest" collaboration. It's an amazing thing to see these people who NEVER acknowledge their history to actually see it...thank you for ruining it with your "needed" comments. ;o)

  • @anyamarie9 what the hell are you talking about? your comment makes no sense. maybe you should start taking your lithium again.

  • I don't think I've ever seen Alison Brown play a guitar.

I wonder who forgot the banjo??

  • Beautiful.

  • i love her sweet little baby like smile!

  • Very pretty

  • What a great voice!!! This is a great old video...

  • Brilliant. Love the ending harmony.

  • awesome!

  • Look at Ms Allison Brown in the background on the guitar...Ha..that's pretty cool.

  • Wow.... she's pretty now... but she sure was pretty and cute back then too!! And her voice was/is so pure and innocent!

  • thank-you dear

  • How is the singer / guitar player with the moustache? Is that young Dan Tyminski?

  • @ReinholdOtto, I found out myself: it's not Dan, it's Tim Stafford.

  • cute x infinity

  • I wonder how old she is?

  • @ncottrel she was 19 in the vid

  • I love this song. We sing it all the time in church. I especially like the lyrics, "How great it must be for angels to see a pilgrim reach home". That really chokes me up when I sing or hear that verse. It's going to be a wonderful day when Jesus comes and rescues His people. Praise you, JESUS! No one could ever love us as much as you. Thank you for everything. AMEN!!

  • Wow, some women just get more and more beautiful each year. She is definitely one of them. Are those the same band members that are still in the band today?

  • @jmk1a1 Just Barry Bales, the percolating stand-up base player. I greaved when Adam Steffey left Union Station. His mandolin playing is indescribably fine. Only David Grisman appeals more to my ears, but Adam's brilliant and has a great sense of fun.

  • Just imagine waking up next to her and being the first to see her eyes each day.

  • she sounds a bit like a very young Dolly Parton, that's a compliment ^^

  • Yes, yes yes.

  • What an amazing voice. Reminds me of all the family bands like down from the mountain types. And so pretty.

  • Funny that this has become the standard version of this tune. Every Bluegrass band on the planet plays it like AKUS did back then.

Though way before the new, improved glamorous Alison - all the vocals are flawless. That perfect "high-lonesome" sound.

  • Just a baby then. What a natural talent.

  • Beautiful .. so excellent .... soothes my soul.

  • i guess you would have to call that vintage union station..nice

  • love this song, beautiful words

trust in Him and lean not on your own unerstanding, He is the way the truth the life, Yeshua

  • Is it even legal to sing this well?

  • Indeed! 74 times 5 stars doesn't even cover this!

  • @funnelstone If whats passes as music today is any indication it isn't

  • I just love this song

Thanks for the posting I love seeing this older videos Alison and Union Station are the best of the best

  • Beautiful song! Great job, Alison and Union Station!

  • I first heard this song on WAMU in Washington D.C. Ray Davis, the D.J. and one of the best M.C.s at "live" Bluegrass shows, would play it almost everyday. It is my favorite song by Alison.

  • I still say she was at her best then. Every musician up there still the cream of the crop today. Absolutely refreshing to hear that little edge she had back then. She had to be 16 or 17 then with that crew. Awesome!! Thanks!!

  • I agree. There are very few tracks of her's I don't care for, but "Two Highways" has to be one of the best all-time albums from any genre. She was so cute!

  • She is 19 here. Born July 1971

  • I fell in love with Allison Krauss & Union Station several years after this. It's interesting to see Barry, Adam and the teenaged Allison Krauss, not to mention Alison Brown playing guitar (I love her banjo playing). What a treasure.

  • Seems like this video has gathered together some serious Alison Krauss fans!

I for my part have listened to her since I was about 4 years old. The first time I heard her sing Too Late To Cry I remember feeling so moved inside, she literally clutched hold of my heart and has never let go since...

There's nothing out there like her...

  • Bluegrasslovely: So well said and put. Is that "Time Stafford" from Blue Highway?

  • Yes, that's Tim Stafford. He was with Union Station for the recording of the Everytime You Say Goodbye album, and was the lead guitar - male vocalist between the original Union Station formation and Dan Tyminski's joining (1991 till 1996 I think). I really liked his contribution to their sound. When they where touring with Alison Brown on the banjo and Adam Steffey on mandolin it was their golden era in my opinion...

  • Wow how time goes by.

  • Bluegrass...There's nothing like this lovely. She is the one!

  • Angelic performance here Allison and Union Station....Praiseeeeeeeeeeee...

  • Awesome harmony and the sweetest voice in bluegrass.

  • Yes, the fiddle was the hook for me, but the voice reeled me into the boat! I think her perfect voice intonation, subtle modulations and control has a lot to do with her talents as a fiddle player - no frets!

Yes, they surprised the audience - put down their instruments stepped in front of the microphones and you heard real direct human voices - what a concept! I'd pay a pretty penny to be able to see her in those small venues again - (sigh....)

  • That's it! It's her expertise with the fiddle that makes her so spectacular. I had never thought of the no frets thing and even the fiddle's subtle modulations. The fiddle talents marks the hearing in a way that reading music misses. Listen to the "Not.." at 2:24. Alison is the best.

  • Remembering from my high school violin days.. that musical "ornament" is like what's called a "mordent" - shown as a little squiggle above a note that means a quick up and down flutter around the main note - a very natural violin move.

(BTW - I sure hope the Led Zep phase passes quickly!)

  • Obviously, you know more about this than I do. :) But this is an insight into Alison's beautiful voice. Thanks for this info. It inspires me to learn to play a fiddle. A "mordent," huh? I LOVE learning something new about music.

I read an article once that those who can sing have a different throat anatomy, so they are specially equipped to carry the talent! Interesting how even those are trained at different levels.

I, too, await the end of her fascination with the Led Zep thing.

  • Saw her sing this acappella in 1988 at the Birchmere in Virginia - she was just a teen I think. After the final rainbow of voices died away, for 5 full seconds - dead silence - you could hear a pin drop . Then the audience went berzerk - standing ovation - tears running down cheeks.

  • Yeah...she would have been 16 or 17then...and as someone who grew up at the Birchmere, I would have loved to see that show.

  • Such a shame that she is no longer available at the small intimate venues. I also saw her at the Library of Congress auditorium - free concert - a couple of years later. Only 40 folks showed up! Was a little embarrassing.

She did sign my daughter's half-size violin (long gone at some yard sale...)

  • Wow! That show must have been incredible!

  • Yes - even without Jerry Douglas! (talk about a child prodigy!

The odd thing is that it was her fiddle playing that blew me away the first time I heard her on the radio - didn't hear her voice - I almost pulled off the road. When I saw her perform it was instantly clear that she was destined for stardom. She IS music.

  • Her voice was what hooked me...hearing "Everytime You Say Goodbye" on a long car trip. Still my favourite album from her.

  • I had a similar experience in 1992. Saw Union Station in a gymnasium, maybe 50 people in attendance. The Cox Family sat in on a song or two. The encore was this song, a cappella AND unamplified. (No microphones.) One of my favorite concert moments ever.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!! A time before commercialism got to her music, and her looks.

  • Agreed! I don't blame AK at all, as I don't think I've ever heard a talent who's endured as long as she has and didn't get pulled into the race a little bit. Nonetheless, she's remained with Rounder Records all this time despite bigger offers from bigger labels, so kudos to her for that.

  • Great Post! That young Alison was so full of sweetness and still is. God certainly sent down an Angel from Heaven to us. Amen.

  • So young and already so full of grace...

After seeing this it's hard to believe that there's no such thing as a gift... A voice like that could never be acquired, even through years of practice. I am so happy that she discovered her talent so early on and has been able to share it with us over the years, it's an ongoing treat for the ears and the heart... Keep up the music Alison !

  • so beautiful

    amen

  • I absolutely love her early music, thanks for the videos.

  • Notice Barry Bales has been there all along for AKUS. Just my observation friends.

  • Hes been there since 1990. He has the longest tenure in the band after Alison. Ron Block is second and Dan Tyminski is third.

  • Her Dad and Mom would be so proud. We are all blessed for this!

  • im sure they are...she gave them one of her grammys

  • A Star In The Making , love you Alison , look forward to your next visit to the UK X

  • Thanks for posting this early performance, with tremendous quality too.
