This has always been one of my favorite studio recordings on Blue Note, it is great to see/hear it live with a super band like this one. What a rhythm section!
This is such a great performance of this as I said back 4 months ago. I keep returning to it again and again. Everybody burns on this not just Jackie, Woody and McCoy, but Cecil Mcbee and Jack DeJohnette too. Cecil's solo is pure genius and Jack just simply kicks ass on drums.
You know a piece of music is great when on the 50th listen, you discover a detail you missed the other 49 times. And oh my G-d, what a transition between Jackie and Woody! It's the same lick, and boy, does Woody launch from it! Such a great clip. Can't wait to watch this another 50 times.
one of my best!!You can hear that one in the amazing jackie's bag(diamond as jacknife action action action destination out ETC...)for me the best after bird in alto sax(naturally with cannonball adderley) shaw monster of trumpet.Bref c'est que du bon!!!!
I was so mad that they cut "Passion Dance" from the DVD. Because it was on the orginal VHS. Rumor has it, that McCoy was the hold up and didn't want it on the DVD release. Hope that's only a rumor
Well what can you say? Everybody plays brillantly here and kicks ass to boot. So sad that Jackie and Woody are gone. In a perfect universe they would live forever so they could keep creating.
I would have to assume, through various techniques of observation, that this was recorded in 1987-1989. The camera/sound quality is amazing, perhaps remastered, and the playing is legendary. McCoy with Woody is perhaps one of the greatest pairings in jazz history, and add the rest of the guys; hey, who am I telling?
It was recorded on feb 85 as a part of the all star live performance celebration the official revival of Blue Note Records. This is a vid from a DVD "a night with blue note" of this gig.
This is awesome!! Great tune and play. Thank you for providing this. I really love this unit from Woody, Maclean, Macoy, Macbee, and Dejohnette. Just kicked my ass off!!
I have seen another tune "Passion Dance" from this concert and Woody played a great solo I bought a dvd of this whole concert and I realized that they cut Passion Dance from it. I really don`t know why ? I was really disappointed. Maybe someone has that "Passion Dance" footage a can post here.

Wow. Freedie is gone. Thought he would live forever. The BlueNote sessions of Hubbard and Shaw now have a lot more meaning--if that's possible.

Saw McCoy and Jack the other day at Freddie's Memorial service in Harlem. They look good.
Both a lot slimmer though.

Doesn't it seem that Jackie McLean plays out of tune. I know, it's his thing. Guess it would sound strange it he wasn't 'out'.

Jackie plays as if his life depends on it. Quite breathtaking. Tyner is off the chain as well, making it look all too easy. Everybody shines though.

Jackie, McCoy and Woody should have performed more together. They are so beautifully progressive!
