Even FT's own researchers admit it is regressive. Here is the quote from one of the Beacon Hill treatises on the AFT site:
"The key result of the foregoing discussion is that it matters fundamentally how one frames the discussion of the distributional effects of the FairTax. When people are sorted by expenditure per capita, the FairTax is progressive; when they are sorted by income per capita, it is regressive."
The "Fair" Tax aka NASTI is a bad idea for the nation.
"The flat tax" does not provide the broad range of comprehensive remediation that the FairTax does, although it is clearly superior to the current system.
However, there really is no such thing as "the flat tax" in as much as if you ask 5 flat taxers what version they support, you are likely to get at least 4 different answers - and none of them will correspond to HR 1040, the flat tax bill in the house. In fact, HR 1040 is a flat tax OPTION, not a replacement for the current system.
First of all, you need to understand that Grover Nordquist is a LOBBYIST. He does not want a simple, fair tax system that everyone could understand; he would be out of a job. Second, the flat tax has been tried and always morphs into a gigantic mess. The current system started out as a flat tax.
For him to say that the FairTax and a flat tax are economically identical shows how uninformed he is (or how disengenuous).
One problem of both the flat income tax and the progressive income tax is that they encourage consumption of imports. A fine on productivity exports jobs.
The only person that pays the cost of any tax including the "flat tax or progressive income tax" is the consumer. If no one consumes your product or service you have no income to pay tax on.
The FairTax puts "fair trade" into "free trade". Go Fairtax and support bill H.R.25
Fairtax sounds great, so it fools stupid people. But Fairtax leaders aren't about to let it get enacted. They know that IF they passed it, they would be laughed at at best, and lynched by mobs, at worst.
Fairtax says it could be 23%. Nonsense -- try 90% -- and they know it. That's why they arent about to enact it.
Lies always sound good to stupid people, as Fairtax knows
that's might liberal of you to suggest having a government pay for everything by stealing from us. i suggest the things you are talking about(bridges) be a states issue. not federal. and the other things(military) be funded with indirect taxation. abolish the federal "income" tax and replace it with nothing. also, it takes a "dumb ass" to ignore the difference between direct and indirect taxes. read up my friend.
dumb fuck -- sorry lunatic -- the insane Fairytale "Fairtax" supposedly raises as much money as all our other taxes together dumb fuck. Which of course is utter nonssense unless everyone pays 90% sales tax on all their spending
Do you want to pay 90% sales tax on all you spend? Including rent, car insurance, food, utilties, medical care?
apparently you didn't get it the first time around. i completely oppose the fairtax. it's an absurd, neo con scheme. compulsary, direct taxes are for those who wish for servitude.
i'm not sure i can count on you educating yourself by reading about any of the topics i've mentioned, considering your utter lack of equanimity reading what i said in a simple comment.
Fairtax is a farce. It pretends to get over a trillion dollars in sales taxes FROM the government.
Do your homework -- read the FT book -- page 148 "The federal government will become a MAJOR taxpayer".
Not only will the FEDERAL governmen become a "Major tax payer" all state, county and local governments have to be "major tax payers' too -- they have to pay this same tax.
So Fairtax depends on absurd nonsense. Its not a serious plan -- its a lying gimmick

The current tax system exacerbates a broad range of adverse economic trends, such as
1. the trade deficit and erosion of our manufacturing sector,
2. the federal budget deficit (to the extent that slower economic growth is a contributing factor)
3. our low savings rate (a cause for concern for just about every serious economist),
4. the spiral of complexity and higher and higher compliance costs (a deadweight loss to our economy),
5. the AMT
6. the crisis in SS & Medicare
