The Dalai Lama on Monday criticised China's irate response to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo, Kyodo News reported in Tokyo.
Speaking at Tokyo's Narita airport, the Dalai Lama, said “the Chinese government does not appreciate different opinions at all".
He also said “building an open, transparent society is the only way to save all people of China but that some "hardliners" inside the leadership were stuck in an "old way of thinking,"
To follow up on artandwine's comment: the same thing would be happening if the US hosted the games this year. There would be protests against the US occupation of Iraq. When are people going to realize the protest is against governments of oppression, not the nationality of the people or the games? People are getting angry only because it's opening up their eyes to the truth. That governments are evil and unjust.
Tibetans were slaves before PRC freed them in 1950s. Why cannot you understand and accept the fact that the chinese brought higher quality of lives into Tibet. Have you been there and saw what really happenned in Lasa before you made the comments against chinese government. The Tibet independent group were killing innocence and setting fires on the streets in Lasa. The chinese police went in to stop them. Some media took away your human right of knowing the real truth and history behind Tibet!
Would you eat at a restaurant that has terrible service, bad policies and terrible health standards?
People aren't protesting the Olympics or the Chinese people. They are protesting the HOST of the Games - the Chinese Communist Government. Don't be upset with protestors - they are fighting much bigger issues than sports. They are fighting for people's basic human rights and lives. Be upset with the CCP and the Olympic Committee for giving them the Games.
Even kids can make out what to say if u make a cartoon with few Tibetan with sticks & stones on one side & 1000s of Communist Army with tanks & machine guns on the other side. World leaders calling for both the sides to restrain. Great, now its a black out & still lost in words. No justice & truth, but for how long????
A Chinese activist who circulated an open letter titled "We Want Human Rights, Not the Olympics," was sentenced to five years in prison Monday, a court official said, The Associated Press reported in Beijing.
The activist, Yang Chunlin, had been charged with subverting the power of the state, a claim the authorities commonly use to clamp down on dissent.
