Because Klaus doesn't know she's alive and she's the key to Klaus plans and if Klaus finds out she's alive. He will kill her. And Stefan doesn't want that, so he 'broke up' with her, so she would stay away from him and forget about him.
Just like Damon said before, Stefan isn't coming back. Not in Elena's life time.

Stefan said he doesn't want to see Elena or be her anymore but the one thing he NEVER said was that he didn't love her. Therefore, I know Elena won't give up that easily. Also when she hugged him why didn't he hug her back? He just stood there. Then when he stopped her from stabbing him I admit I was a bit scared. That was frightening!
The last S/E was heartbreaking & I feel bad for Elena as well as Stefan. He still cares. He felt bad that he killed innocent people but what can he do about it?

I honestly didn't cry or get upset while watching this o.o (People can hate me if they want lol.) But yeah, Elena needed the harsh realization that she can't get Stefan back for a long time. I agree, it was harsh and I wish Stefan was a little gentler, but she did the right thing. And I mean, I'm a Delena shipper, but I'm kinda excited to see how things turn out this season :3 I don't want anything way too serious to happen until Stelena gets true closure.

@9547246 I prefer Delena cuz it's a better relationship to me. Damon never held back from Elena like Stefan held his ripper side from her, & now it's taking it's toll on her. Even in Elena's most anxious moments, Damon always had the ability to make her smile & laugh. Stelena were bland & had zero chemistry to me from the start. Elena is basically finding out that she never really knew that much about Stefan in the first place, & it's not a good relationship if it's filled w/ lies/holding back.
