Girls are expected by society to be social creatures. I think women who have autism or aspergers have a hard time because they are seen by other women as being awkward and they don't know how to act around them. That's why I turn to men for social support because they're more accepting of differences. I was picked on SO BAD in elementary and high school because of my aspergers. I am not ashamed anymore and check out my piano channel, you'll see that I clearly love music!
Aspergers, Bipolar, Autism, manodepression etc etc is just labels that mental health experts put on people for making a diagnosis more easy. Like labeling a product in a store. Being bullied for having these labels is therefore not logical. Aspies can be very nice to talk to if you get them out of their shell. Their view of the world is something very interesting and it has an innocent vibe to it.
This message isn't to 'a large group', as most psychologists + families see we are beautiful: ...but as an autistic person, per se, it is very distressing that USA 'professionals' talk about us like we are diseased. We have difficulties; AND talents, we are angels, not retards.
It is not accurate, or moral, to wish that we were different: WE don't!
Yes we have great difficulties; but only to begin with; until we find our centre. Please then, don't reject/'cure' our SELVES! (Not that one can.)
I have Aspergers. This video has really moved me. I don't watch ANTM but Heather has really inspired me to be strong and hold my head up high. A lot of those other girls sound really bitchy :/
it sucks having asperger's especially when you're around allot of negative ppl. i've noticed i've picked up some stuf and it's going to start getting me in trouble but having trouble stopping doing it. i was fine when i was going from job to job and just being at home or on my bicycle. think i'm going to just shut up and keep to myself cus when i try to be social it doesn't end up well now adays.

Watching Heather on that show reminded me so much of my own daughter. It's heartbreaking to know my sweet natured child will be subjected to similar things in her life. When I was watching this season of ANTM, I can't believe some of the ways that the other girls treated Heather. Some of them were nice, and tried to help, and others were just horrible. Heather's one of the coolest people on this show! I have Aspergers, and she's helped show me that you can adapt to these situations and stuff. Its hard, but possible. She's a brilliant person, I can't believe the way people treated her!!
I watched this season and i still think it's wrong that she went out when she did (because she got lost of the go-sees so didn't see enough designers). No sense of direction is a common trait in people with Autism all across the spectrum. Being a professional model she would of had someone with her to help with the directions.
Heather made me cry after watching this (since i've got Asperger's too). i'd cry when i see women like me on the spectrum making big strides & achievements in life. after watching these bitches talk smack behind her back, i realize i despise NTs even more. i think they're a bunch of ungrateful, manipulative, superficial assholes thinking that they're better than anyone who aren't like them. i'm so proud of Heather for showing the world what a truly beautiful person inside & out really is!

to be fair, this was in 2007 and we know more about autism and or aspergers now. *I* know more about it. I knew about it but i had no idea just how regular someone can act with it. I always suspected i had it but I wasn't sure....and now i'm sure just by watching people like this girl and reading up on it. So just remember, I hear that they learn more and more about it every year and this was 2007 so there was a lot more ignorance than now, even though there is still ignorance about it.

aspergers is a form of autism and heather likened it to autism herself. as someone with aspergers myself, i find more people are familiar with the term autism than they are with the term aspergers syndrome, so if it's explained that way people are more prone to understand if it's explained that way.
@tuberman97 I've heard someone with it explain it as a person with a half autistic brain, and half "regular" brain. I don't know if a doctor would necessarily say that but i think there is some truth to that.
I don't remember who won in 07 cycle but I still remember Heather and her struggle with the beeyotches in the house. I know Heather will go far in life!

For other viewers, maybe confused, Heather didn't ask for her condition; just like I didn't ask for my condition.
My condition did not stop me from marrying. It didn't stop me from having a halfway decent job when the economy was in halfway decent shape. Almost everyone that was a genius had some amount of autism.

I have never watched this show, but heard about Heather from a friend of mine who happens to be a big fan of Tyra Banks as well as this show. I have an 8 year old son with AS and since hearing about Heather she has become one of my biggest inspirations. Seeing Heather's drive and determination is amazing to me and gives me hope for my son.

announcing a disability is a two-edged sword...it can hurt or help. Autism tends to make people withdraw and the fact that she wants to be in photographs, which is hard for people with that disability is amazing and it means that you can do anything. On the other hand it could make people feel sorry for you, but it was obvious that Heather didn't want pity. She just wanted people to be aware of it and treat her like a human being. I think it was awesome of her to remove some of the stigma.
as far as tyra announcing it: i guess it was fair game once heather made the fact of her asperger's syndrome known when she first auditioned. i didn't get the vibe that tyra thought of her as less than the other girls, if anything it seemed quite the opposite.
seriously I give props to Heather that she got so far. I wish she had won. Not only was she the most attractive, but despite her 'disability' she was by far the nicest, and most earnest of the whole group. I hope she goes far and that people learn to treat better her and anyone with similar disabilites.

When I was watching this season of ANTM, I can't believe some of the ways that the other girls treated Heather. Some of them were nice, and tried to help, and others were just horrible. Heather's one of the coolest people on this show! I have Aspergers, and she's helped show me that you can adapt to these situations and stuff. Its hard, but possible. She's a brilliant person, I can't believe the way people treated her!!

I watched this season and i still think it's wrong that she went out when she did (because she got lost of the go-sees so didn't see enough designers). No sense of direction is a common trait in people with Autism all across the spectrum. Being a professional model she would of had someone with her to help with the directions.

to be fair, this was in 2007 and we know more about autism and or aspergers now. *I* know more about it. I knew about it but i had no idea just how regular someone can act with it. I always suspected i had it but I wasn't sure....and now i'm sure just by watching people like this girl and reading up on it. So just remember, I hear that they learn more and more about it every year and this was 2007 so there was a lot more ignorance than now, even though there is still ignorance about it.

aspergers is a form of autism and heather likened it to autism herself. as someone with aspergers myself, i find more people are familiar with the term autism than they are with the term aspergers syndrome, so if it's explained that way people are more prone to understand if it's explained that way.

I wish to pass on to heather; I'm in the same boat. I have Aspergers Syndrome. I didn't always know; I knew I was different; but didn't know what the heck it was.
For other viewers, maybe confused, Heather didn't ask for her condition; just like I didn't ask for my condition.
My condition did not stop me from marrying. It didn't stop me from having a halfway decent job when the economy was in halfway decent shape. Almost everyone that was a genius had some amount of autism.

Well...the girls were nice to Heather later on in the competition, especially Chantal. I also remember seeing parts where Bianca was giving Heather some good advice and Saleisha fussing over her when she fainted....and they were supposed to be the big bullies? It's all about how the show's edited.

I have never watched this show, but heard about Heather from a friend of mine who happens to be a big fan of Tyra Banks as well as this show. I have an 8 year old son with AS and since hearing about Heather she has become one of my biggest inspirations. Seeing Heather's drive and determination is amazing to me and gives me hope for my son.
Heather knowingly and willingly put herself in to a situation that would seem impossible to most people with AS and handled it beautifully and with grace

announcing a disability is a two-edged sword...it can hurt or help. Autism tends to make people withdraw and the fact that she wants to be in photographs, which is hard for people with that disability is amazing and it means that you can do anything. On the other hand it could make people feel sorry for you, but it was obvious that Heather didn't want pity. She just wanted people to be aware of it and treat her like a human being. I think it was awesome of her to remove some of the stigma.
