  • Oh, the magneto. I thought maybe Burt had some insanely aggressive cam that prevents idle at any rpm.

  • Saw the film again today for the umpteenth time , never fails to bring a tear to my eye

  • If I remember correctly, there are THREE versions of his bike for each of the years 1962, 1966 and 1967 when he set records. Burt competed at the salt flats like 7 times, sometimes without the the streamline cage.

Version 1: looks same as in movie, snorkels and triple vane tail fin.(no nose intake)

Version 2: changed to larger single vane tail fin, snorkels are more "finessed" (no Nose intake)

Version 3: nose air intake, no snorkels, vent holes in lower back body (what you see in above video)

  • @maxmillion7007 Your memory does indeed serve you correctly.

I get a lot of hate mail and I wish more people understood there's more than one of these. He made over a dozen different bodies for them. The Invercargill bikes are authentic, as well as this one. Burt spent his life savings shipping one here via. sea, but he made friends in the US. He left the chassis here because it cost too much to ship back, and so he could fly home instead of spending more than a month at sea with his bike.

  • one of the greatest bikes to ever exist in my opinion .well done

  • his bikes in invercargill u stupid yank fuck it have been in hayes hardware 4 2o years

  • @jamesbobification Aye mate you are correct I have spoken with the chap who owns the bike and he even invited me on down to Invercargill to have a look at it. Plus anyone can Google Hayes Hardware in Invercargill to see the truth.

  • @ericjkent The record setting chassis NEVER returned to Australia. Burt couldn't afford it, but his engine fit in a suitcase. Breaking records doesn't pay in case nobody ever told you. Burt built 3 of these bikes. Perhaps check Wikipedia.

So are the bikes in Invercargill authentic? Absolutely. Burt built both of them. Could they have set the record? Absolutely. Did they set the record at Bonneville? Absolutely not. They never came the the US. I don't make this up as I go.

  • @ericjkent Excuse me, I meant New Zealand.

  • Jay leno was wishing that was his bike.

  • Looks different from the replica in the movie.

  • i love that bike, burt munro its a real heroe.

  • its a shame most people and poloticians are not made out of the stuff Burt was made of!!!

  • Hello My name is Wayne when i was young i used to go to the southland club with my dad in Invercargill and over the fire place was a photo of Burt Munros Bike My dad owned a 1928 indian scout

  • Won,t start as burts watching & shouting GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY BIKE lol.....LEGEND.

  • very nice motorcicle, it's a legend =)

  • If this was purported to be the original it probably would have started first time. Its a copy of the original. Didn't the Indian Company make a copy? I'd bet if you stripped this model down there would be stock parts and not the home made piston made by Burt

  • What a beautiful piece of machinery.

  • Either he had a death wish or whole lotta faith one things for sure a bike that has less than 1000cc & set a record at 200plus mph in 1967.... LEGEND

  • :O .....it's beautiful!

  • bert turned his indian into one angry sounding machine...love the minimalist look of the old indian bikes

  • He cast his own pistons, and pissed on a lemon tree every morning. Cheers above mate!!!

  • wtf, wats up wit jay being a pain in the azz sacarstic hata!!next time too,get dat shit warmed up and ready to ride befow dem niggas show up wanting to see sumpthin gud!!

  • No toquen esa moto si no saben !

  • THE FLYING KIWI the only person who could brake this record is a old new zealand who lived in a shed

  • well worth the hunting around for 2 hours, and they couldn't have picked a better actor to play good ol Burt in the movie, but still cannot find any footage of the real burt racing, well never give up!!

  • @TheDh0ffryn His name was bert till a american mag mis spelled his name there for changing it to burt thought you might want to know lol (I think)

  • wait... this machine is real??? there really was a Burt Monroe?? i thought it was just a good movie... OUTSTANDING!! thats just made my day.. :D

  • Go to Invercargill mate.

  • @belinda2118 Thats with one l to save ink.

  • Hmmm. From Wikipedia---The "Munro Special," as Munro called his bike, is now owned by a motorcycle enthusiast in New Zealand's South Island, and is on display at E Hayes & Sons, Invercargill.[11] There is also a second motorcycle purported to be the original "Munro Special" in America.[12]

I saw that one in NZ.

  • I think it is funny this thing still holds the recored for the fastest machine under 1000 cc

  • @Hogasofa

    Yep :))

  • @Hogasofa It holds the record not because it can't be beaten, but because no one wants it to be beaten.

  • @squirlybmx Rubbish!.. no one's got the bottle to beat it (balls to beat it ) and that's a fact.

  • Hi Tom, thanks for the Indian link, finally found it and some others. Great talking to you at the garage sale. Even if he wasn't quite the saint portrayed in the movie, Burt must have been quite a guy. Thanks to you and your brother and your family for preserving this great bit of racing history. Those guys in N.Z. can take a hike.

  • So which one is real; this nice shiney one or the one in the Hardware store in NZ?

  • @BikeMeAustin The 1920 Indian Scout “Munro Special” is now owned by the Hensley Family Collection of Los Osos, California. Google verifies it.

The one remarkable thing about Concours d'Elegance is that nothing counterfeit ever gets shown. Only the real-deals and best-of-the-bests are ever on display. All vehicles attend by-invitation, they get to bring their owners, and usually are based on a theme. This year's theme was salt flat racers and Munro stole the show.

  • @Jafromobile Ahh ok, I didn't realize someone had purchased that baby. They sure did a nice job on restoring it but to be honest I sort of prefered how it looked in it's somewhat original state when it was at the hardware store. Still looks great though, thanks for the info!

  • @Jafromobile are you sure, I think i saw it at hayes the other day

  • @Jafromobile are you sure, I think i saw it at hayes the other day (thats in Invercargill)

    will look tomorrow

  • @Jafromobile Just thought id clear your comment up a bit for people who dont know what your talking about mate, hope you understand but its confusing to read. Burt had 2 frames, a sprint frame that stayed in NZ that burt developed his engines in and this frame, a frame that stayed in usa most of burts later trips.. the engine in this one was made from burts spare parts, the one in NZ is the engine at the end of burts life (his good engine fully developed) this bike had the engine ect restored.

  • @fergus1494 if that isnt clear enough for some. Yes this bike is burts indian, but its engine is a restored version (not fully original) after the original one made from spare parts threw a rod or something like that.. Burts actual engine is in the hardware store in NZ. both are his frames but this is the one he set the landspeed records on. This is the original frame as the 'sprint' as i like to call it frame was made from another scout frame. but burts final engine is in NZ.

  • @fergus1494 Your comment is very much appreciated. You can tell how much people love Burt because of the controversy that surrounds this machine. I was fairly certain what you described was the case, but conflicting information on-line about the NZ bike prevented me from posting any of it. My contribution is the video.

In reality, Burt begged, borrowed and gambled to get enough money to bring this chassis to the US. It was cheaper and easier to make the journey home with just the engine.

  • @Jafromobile Tom lives there me I live in Atascadero,CA My friend has worked on this engine

  • @BikeMeAustin This will be the original frame but non original motor. Burt was asked if he would sell the bike once he was back in NZ and had "retired" from racing. He couldnt bring himself to sell the engine though so built another one to sell with the bike. The original engine that set the records is the one in Invercargill in a second frame he built for testing purposes, that way he only had to bring the engine home for development, not the whole bike.

  • He had GOD on his side? Hell yeah, the GOD OFF SPEED !

    Nice vid, thanks for posting

  • I am the guy standing over the engine. It never fails. Jay Leno walks up, you are at Pebble Beach, someone is taking great video and the magneto dies. At least it started in the morning for the judges. Thanks for this. It is great coverage. By the way, we won best racing motorcycle. Thanks again for the video work. Nicely done.

  • @PLSchack Just wanted you to know that more people watch this video (and from more countries) than all of my Bugatti and Ferrari videos combined. Just goes to show you what an amazing and inspirational piece of machinery you've got your hands on. You deserved best racing motorcycle. The thanks go all to you for making this video possible! ;)

  • @PLSchack: That's what we in England call 'sod's law'.

  • How much was admission to this thing, Jafro?

  • @jjrock5 $150 if you were smart enough to buy them in advance on-lilne... but I paid $175 at the gate. Of course that doesn't include round-trip air fare or hotels. Concorso Italiano was only $125.

  • That is COOL! Were you there?

  • @devilslice Holding the 9lb camera that filmed it . :)

  • Comment removed

  • @rcdevil2 Admission is expensive. Aren't you glad you clicked that subscribe button? ;)
