let me simplify everything, window and mac are both great OSs, they serve different purposes however, a macbook air for instance would be great for school since you need something thin and light, and a regular laptop say a thinkpad, would be good if you don't give a crap about your computer, i just switched to mac, honestly i love pc, but mac is so much more convenient in everyday, not to mention i don't need an antivirus program, personally i will never go back to pc, but to each his own.

Reviewer forgot to mention the military torture tests Lenovo puts this Thinkpad through. Trying dropping you macbook from 50 feet or pouring water on the keyboard and see if it still works.

@eivis13 You might as well say instead of these, go with the Panasonic Toughbook. That's getting outside the point. We're comparing these two products, and between these two, the Thinkpad is clearly the tougher product. And for not being a rugged notebook, it does a pretty good job at durability!
@DemiAps The point is that if it can survive a 50 foot drop (which is way more than what would normally happen) than it can definitely sustain the rigors of carrying it on the road. the point of the waterproof keyboard and sand/dust testing is that it is accident proof (spilled coffee on the bus or during a meeting for example). And, yes this also means you could take it to the beach without it breaking. I wouldn't trust any Macbook for any of this stuff since it hasn't been tested for it.

A long time ago I asked an apple seller for what those devices can handle - shock resistance, fall damage and so on. He was really surprised: Noone ever asked. If I need a good looking piece of shit with no functionality I would get something cheaper...
@simfight0 Exactly! I think that is why all the Mac fans who have commented on my post can't see it that way. Looks and sexiness is all that matters to them. But, people in the business world need more than cool looks. They need assurance that if someone bumps them on the bus and they drop their laptop, it's not going to need repair. I'd personally take good build quality over looks anyday. And, if I wanted a nice-looking laptop, I'd just go buy one of HP's dv-series laptops.
And in fact, "style" is somehow subjective - and as always told, most business users might say the "oldschool" lenovo style does look much better than the "modern" style.
By the way, did someone use a "brushed aluminium casing device" for a long time and notice black blemishes? My lenovo laptops look as good as new after several years of usage, most of the apple products friends of mine own were replaced after one year...

I didn't know those aluminum casing wears out. But I guess that makes sense since 90% of the people I see with Macbooks use a plastic case and that silicon keyboard cover. Thinkpad doesn't need those things since it's already built to last.

I can put Linux Hackintosh and Windows on my computer no problem, the EULA says it needs to be a mac-branded computer, but the install includes an apple sticker. I slapped that on and it was legal. Macs have little compatability (need converters for everything) and cost more than they should. The hardware sucks. No thanks.

@mymovie3 The only place, where apple is doing "better" than MS, is in the USA. Anywhere else in Europe, for instance, 98% of the systems are run by windows, and not apple hardware/software. As for weight, and size, it won't matter if you can't run a single thing properly. I've got a VAIO for myself, running Windows 7 on it, and let me tell you, it's way better to be able to watch anything, or listen to anything in HD, on a huge screen, without hardware limitations. Also, games.
@Termiborger I don't think Apple are doing better than MS in the USA. The vast majority of Apple's income is from itunes, Appstore and mobile device sales. But in the laptop and desktop market, Windows still has about 90% market share, and HP and Dell make up about half of the total laptop market in the US, with Apple in 3rd or 4th place with Acer at about 10% each. Globally of course you're right, Apple doesn't even top 5%, even if you combine it with iOS device sales.
The MBA is a joke. It's SSD is very slow and it's OS can't do anything else than facebook. If you do not like Vista on the thinkpad, you can install Seven or a GNU/Linux distibution. Also, the thinkpad is much more resistant and its build quality is superior.
@atom608 Design is pretty much the last thing, your laptop, or rather any IT equipment should focus on. Getting the job done properly, that's the priority for any, and all hardware. Besides Apple, where shine, and style is. And maybe Sony a little bit too.

@eCaravanier it depends on the things you want to do with it, if you want to make apps,video/music editing and the most thing you usb ports for are mouses/keyboards and mac uses bluetooth so no usb ports needed
@lenteboom And for anyone else who wants his computer to do anything more than these functions, because with a more powerful hardware, you have more options, you will most certanly buy either a desktop PC, or a standard sized Windows based laptop. And no, USB ports are definitely not only for external peripherials. MBA comes with an SSD, which is fast, but ridiculously small in means of capacity. So that USB port probably will go for an external storage device.
i like both but if i had to pick one it would be the Thinkpad X300 cause i record COD videos and i need the disk thing and usb ports... there both great though :D
Mac has better design, PC has less compatibility problems (If a game is being released it will be on PC, about 50/50 for a mac these days).
For me I don't give a fuck about playing games, I just want to chill online. Which means i'd prefer a macbook just based on comfort and design alone.
I work 40 hours a week supporting Windows machines, it's not that I hate Windows 7, I just can't be fucked with it anymore. When I get home and crack a beer I want my laptop to just work. = why I have a mac

Wow, yeah, that pull-out optical drive tray sure is sexy, right? The '90s called and want that thing back. And battery life? Well, a more efficient OS is going to handle battery life better. Oh well, guess the working man needs a "thin" (was it even thin?) laptop to feel rich too. I don't miss my optical drive or ethernet. Most hotels have wireless, and if not, you CAN buy a USB adaptor, same for the optical drive. Oh well, enjoy your X300.

Mac is more like pleasure technology than anything to me. I have only seen it once being use in an actual business. Mac also seems like you have to deliberately buy a new thing if you want to expand the RAM or the Hard Disk space. All of you arguments seem based on "You can buy this" or "You CAN buy that." Thats fine if you are rich.
@pdiz I already am, I installed Ubuntu on it which runs much better than any mac I've ever touched, not to mention the durability of it is just outstanding, it doesn't look like a children's toy as the macbook does. I am very much happy with my thinkpad and wouldn't trade any other laptop for it. Personally the thinkpad is much sexier than the mac. I love that dark rugged look over the "look at me I'm rich and shiny" look. Enjoy your overpriced brick! :3
@pdiz As a more experienced colleague of mine once said, once you have no power, and the OS is handling the tray, how the hell will you get your disk out of a mac? The answer is you won't. No laptop, which I've ever senn in my life, came with automatic trays. And if I don't have to, I won't buy any external devices. My VAIO has 3 USB drives a Blu-ray reader, full HD screen, and an extremely decent hardware within it, for the same price of a macbook, with shittier specs. Design is not a priority.

And the reason no one uses them is because they cost a little more, and your PC is a compromise of components. I don't understand your other part. Well it's because the technology was too advance, and the resulting cost would not be affordable by some middle and most third class citizens. @1loudninja I think you're confused. Microsoft don't make computers, and they never have. They make software. They have only released 3 desktop operating systems in the last 10 years, so i don't know where you get the "every year" thing from.
There are already waterproof computers (like the Panasonic Toughbook) and as I said Lenovo's laptops boot in 10 seconds. These technologies are down to the PC manufacturer, not the OS developer, and are often aimed at a specific market.

But, people in the business world need more than cool looks. They need assurance that if someone bumps them on the bus and they drop their laptop, it's not going to need repair. I didn't know those aluminum casing wears out. But I guess that makes sense since 90% of the people I see with Macbooks use a plastic case and that silicon keyboard cover. Thinkpad doesn't need those things since it's already built to last.

I can put Linux Hackintosh and Windows on my computer no problem, the EULA says it needs to be a mac-branded computer, but the install includes an apple sticker. I slapped that on and it was legal. Macs have little compatability (need converters for everything) and cost more than they should. The hardware sucks. No thanks.

@mymovie3 The only place, where apple is doing "better" than MS, is in the USA. Anywhere else in Europe, for instance, 98% of the systems are run by windows, and not apple hardware/software. As for weight, and size, it won't matter if you can't run a single thing properly. I've got a VAIO for myself, running Windows 7 on it, and let me tell you, it's way better to be able to watch anything, or listen to anything in HD, on a huge screen, without hardware limitations. Also, games.

@Termiborger I don't think Apple are doing better than MS in the USA. The vast majority of Apple's income is from itunes, Appstore and mobile device sales. But in the laptop and desktop market, Windows still has about 90% market share, and HP and Dell make up about half of the total laptop market in the US, with Apple in 3rd or 4th place with Acer at about 10% each. Globally of course you're right, Apple doesn't even top 5%, even if you combine it with iOS device sales.

The MBA is a joke. It's SSD is very slow and it's OS can't do anything else than facebook. If you do not like Vista on the thinkpad, you can install Seven or a GNU/Linux distibution. Also, the thinkpad is much more resistant and its build quality is superior.

And no, USB ports are definitely not only for external peripherials. MBA comes with an SSD, which is fast, but ridiculously small in means of capacity. So that USB port probably will go for an external storage device.

Mac has better design, PC has less compatibility problems (If a game is being released it will be on PC, about 50/50 for a mac these days).
For me I don't give a fuck about playing games, I just want to chill online. Which means i'd prefer a macbook just based on comfort and design alone.
I work 40 hours a week supporting Windows machines, it's not that I hate Windows 7, I just can't be fucked with it anymore. When I get home and crack a beer I want my laptop to just work. = why I have a mac

Mac is more like pleasure technology than anything to me. I have only seen it once being use in an actual business. @pdiz I already am, I installed Ubuntu on it which runs much better than any mac I've ever touched, not to mention the durability of it is just outstanding, it doesn't look like a children's toy as the macbook does. I am very much happy with my thinkpad and wouldn't trade any other laptop for it. Personally the thinkpad is much sexier than the mac. I love that dark rugged look over the "look at me I'm rich and shiny" look. Enjoy your overpriced brick! :3

@pdiz As a more experienced colleague of mine once said, once you have no power, and the OS is handling the tray, how the hell will you get your disk out of a mac? The answer is you won't. No laptop, which I've ever senn in my life, came with automatic trays. And if I don't have to, I won't buy any external devices. My VAIO has 3 USB drives a Blu-ray reader, full HD screen, and an extremely decent hardware within it, for the same price of a macbook, with shittier specs. Design is not a priority.

@1loudninja I think you're confused. Microsoft don't make computers, and they never have. They make software. They have only released 3 desktop operating systems in the last 10 years, so i don't know where you get the "every year" thing from.
There are already waterproof computers (like the Panasonic Toughbook) and as I said Lenovo's laptops boot in 10 seconds. These technologies are down to the PC manufacturer, not the OS developer, and are often aimed at a specific market.
