  • I'm a bit of an old lady--43--loved the Strangle'rs as a kid and still own many vinyl albums of many~as much as I enjoy you tube & finding old stuff, I so like finding vinyl @ garage sales, etc, & collecting. Not ready for a Nook~ love the written page!

  • YES!@@#(&%@#%(&@

  • by far their best, and one of the best albums of all time.

  • Gawd this song give me chills! It makes me remember the very few things I loved about high school (including this song)!

  • this is how I remember them, raw,not too sophisticated ( as they can be nowadays) passionate and technically brilliant. that jj was a bit of fit too!!! still is.

  • Seen Hugh amost 2 years ago, it was epic, played mosly Stranglers songs and few from Hoover... Loved it, but without Greenfield, it's not the same....

  • we have moved through many music era's since this. (Ska, New Romantic, Rock again!) Then just all the nonsense since them, (Spice clowns??, Take What? ) & all the hip/ hop trash....sheer disposable music, then we still have the Stranglers, who have throughout, offered quality, diversity, class, and JET BLACK of course!!! Beat That!!

  • Love Hugh's Hank Marvin tribute moves at the beginning!!!

  • Brilliant band, brilliant song. I've heard them play this a load better though.

  • One of the very best bands ever.

  • They were gods. Had to stop. Deeam Thes;...?

  • Even Talking Heads robbed them

  • @johnanthonyp yep they did and so did Joy Division and even U2

  • more keyborads then rick wakeman lol who were the prog rockers?

  • @yooanoozarrmay for give my spelling . pissed

  • Black & White is a superb album and yet overlooked in a lot of ways. For a third album when probably everyone thought they'd be shot it was an incredible piece of work. And they came up with 4 classic albums in two years. No messing about in those days.

  • fantastic tune there is nothing that can compete wiv them, absolute talented genius

  • He never returned mine either!

  • i stupidly gave away the free single that came with 1st pressings of Black on White on white vinyl with walk on by on it to a "m8" who promised it back

  • not good still go mine from 78 classic hope you get it back seeing them in manchester on sat

  • Anyone got the live version from Reading in 87?

  • This was a lackluster performance Hugh left the band. I will now put on the Black and White album on to block out my memory of this video

  • black n white...one of the best albums ever...in my mind...

  • Yep.......definitely.

  • @akastuntfish couldn't agree more.Tremendous Album and my personal fave from the men in black.

  • just check out the originality its brilliant, such a same HC left for his own reasons,he was the VOICE et al,can't get enough of these boys, recently saw Damned at Hammy who were great followed by some wally band Motorhead,my God how shit are they ! NO music, just NOISE ! sorry Lemmy, give it up !

  • Kate Bush was knocked out by the Raven album. She's brilliant. She was shocked how somebody could be as angulalr as her ( she was in the next studio and had the sexy rudness to walk in!) Check out that male pig album!.

  • @johnanthonyp any time you get bush and kate together has to be a good thing.

  • I was going to put thi up against Dream Theater but Hugh is pretty wacked here. Can somebody segue a cool version on to them to shut them East Coast hippies, please?

  • He'S My hero. H'ss definitlely far far far funnier than Beefheart, Dylan and Van Morrison but he's under the influence here. He's a good man doing a tour this week , I saw him in Birmingham one time, has a voice a room fillling voice like that! oooh, If my book works out you and JJ will talk.

  • It sounds like toilet but what is a toiler?

  • Somebody who's really constipated, and works like hell to have a reet good shite.

  • @Forestamtul

"toilers on the sea" refers to a story by victor hugo

  • still strangled

  • The Stranglers are great!

  • these guys were unique - so melodic and at the same time gritty - saw them 17 times, was @ battersea park (14 years old)... but i didn't like La Folie, and after Aural Sculpture i never bought another record of theirs. but this one's a classic.

  • @wi11ydapimp YOU KNOW , ME TOO. I FOLLOWED THEM FOR YEARS, EVEN GOT TO KNOW THEM ACTUALLY BUT CALLED IT A DAY AFTER AURAL. HOWEVER THEY ARE BACK WITH VENGENCE , I LOVE THEIR NEW STUFF.

  • thats fucking proper..

  • Great Track

  • Amen

  • personal opinion proffesor

  • stranglers still the best band ever 2009

  • not without Cornwall there not.

  • I agree!

    and its cornwell

  • i've met them. and that dave greenfield does a fuckin great impresion of jimmy white i'll tell ya!

  • f**king excellent drumming as usual from jet black! one of my drumming heros and drumming influences.excellent track! thanks for posting

  • omigod! brings back memories, forgot how brilliant they were. MUST get Black and White again. Always was my favourite Stranglers album

  • Black and White was the album where it all came together, agreed. Great group! Under-sung ... at least here in the States.

  • my fav cousin :) from across the pond... we always knew there would be a few... keepin it alive... thx guys.

  • Sorry about the "poor comment" vote- I meant to click on the other one!

  • omigod! brings back memories? MUST get Black and White again.

  • haha i love how his guitar strings curl off at the end

it's so unprofessional perfect for the stranglers to do! i love it!

  • We have all had strings breaking in the middle of a performance. Nothing strange there. ;-)

  • go see them they still gig like fuck?just played T in the park still the DOGS catch them or regreT it FROM AN OLD FUCK FACE PUNK.:)

  • black and white fuckin rules!!!

  • the version from the complilation album 'all live and all of the night' is the best one for me: more energy than this one, although i havn't seen it yet..

  • Think this is hard for them to do live. It should be a lot tighter. Sounds great on black and white.

  • I agree 100%. Does sound great on B&W. My fave track on that album.

  • They've done great versions of this in 1978 live - much faster.

  • this is one of the Stranglers best songs, black and white is quite a good album albeit a lot of people dont think so, it's underrated. I hate to admit it but Hugh's playing doesnt do justice in this live performance!

  • Did "Flock of Seagulls" really get their name inspired by this song?

  • Yes, they actually did. I think A Flock Of Seagulls got their name because of a line in this song that says A Flock Of Seagulls and also because of this book, I think. You should search them up on Wikipedia or see the video when they were on TOTP since there were facts coming on the screen and stuff. :D hope this helps!

  • doesnt get any better than the glers i remember stealin all my big brothers albums an gettin my 8 shades of shit kicked out of me for it {haha} well worth it. the most underrated band ever. wouldnt have it any other way though. death an night an blood.

  • Love those Los Strangleros del negro - where/when was this??

  • Rockpalast is a German music television show that broadcasts live on German television station Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).

    1983

  • cheers sam where the hell did u get that vintage piece from man !!!

  • wow! I just loved this song literally the moment i heard it! which was now, :)

    sounds awesome!

  • I feel the same way :)

Now, "Black and White" is coming from amazon.

  • :D Cool! Thanks!

  • interesting, so much slower than their original studio take. I'd prefer a bit of an upbeat tempo...

  • if this song didnt exist, my favorite band a flock of seagulls wouldnt exist.

  • wow... coincidence I'm watching this video! Yup... so THANK YOU STRANGLERS

  • always thought these guy were the best out of england in there time. rattus and black and white my favourites. toiler, tank, grip etc.

  • Fantastic! "A flock of seagulls, a flock of seagulls"!!! I am bias to anything of the Black and White album, in my opinion their best piece of studio work.

  • ah yes! and the phrase that gave a flock of seagulls their name.

  • What a song.

  • A great band ! Great musicians !

  • one of my 5 fav. stranglers song. i love to play the bass lines on this
