  • Becker?

  • We would be pleased to offer Stewart a Lento Percussion

    Triplet Drum Glove Endorsement.

  • Damn, Copeland seems to be a kinda narrow minded, boring person.

  • Hahahaha "when you 14 you want like thrash". So true XD

  • yes ginger baker with the cream was a guy i was kind of following back in the day but more interesting to me was making a hit in pocket groove. hit it hard and wish it well. you can hear it on my you tube video beedosticks, which has been sampled now for records.beedojohn is another one to ck. out. nice guy stewart.

  • Dear Jesus, some of these comments are horrible. The interviewer wasn't really being insulting at all. If you're not going to give his work proper criticism, you should probably refrain from commenting at all. How do you know about his musical knowledge?

  • Just because you have "3 drop" doesn't mean you're influenced by reggae. There are so many more genres of music that had that before reggae was even invented. Of course The Police were influenced by reggae, but learn the music of where Stewart grew up before trying to put words in his mouth, dipshit.

  • The more I hear Stewart Copeland talk, and listen to how well thought out and amicable he is, the more Sting seems like a pretentious douche-bag.

  • You can just see that stewart is thinking "Ughhh, dude, just shut up man" and the interviewer is so persistant like "You were very influenced by Reggae weren't you?", and stew says "No, it was more Lebanese music that influenced me." interviewer: "No, i know you better, you were influenced by Reggae!" lol :P fail interview

  • bla bla, iwanna hear music....

  • I get where the interviewer is coming from. Copeland's style is so obviously reggae influenced and he can not for the life of him get him to mention one influence that explains where that comes from. Pretty amusing actually!

  • nah that interviewer was definantly an idiot and needs to learn how to actually interview someone

  • Love this. So much influence in here.

  • Stewart is one of the baddest motherfuckers to ever pick up a pair of sticks. He was pretty polite all in all , I must say . The guy asked the same question 3 ways and wasn't satisfied till he named Mittch and Ginger. Then really messed the interviewer up by saying he couldn't name ANY reggae drummers. Oh yeah then there's Lebanon.. Lesson - Don't mess with Clark Kent !

  • Hahahahaha hard heeter

  • Copeland is CIA.

  • LEAVE THE INTERVIEWER ALONE FOR FUCKS SAKE! He's only doing his job, every youtube video there's comments all about how superior the man/woman in the chair is and how the interviewer should show more respect. SHUT UP!

  • That interviewer is such a faggot.

  • all those questions were 'who inspired you?' but just said differently 10 times lol

  • YES BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REGGAE

  • Next time this asshat should interview himself He had pretty definite ideas on how his questions should be answered.

  • 0:47 haha 'daddy'

  • This interviewer clearly knows fuck all about Stewart Copeland...

  • dude, dont you think that he knows that.CB was the culmination of reggae drumming.

  • not one reggae drummer too name.? whoom!!! Your style is so much reggae ; you recorded in jamaica in the 70's and you admire reggae drummers but cant name one... I will help you Stewart; How about CARLTON BARRETT aka BoB Marley's DRUMMER.

  • @wynjee that shocks me that he couldn't name one. or at least drummers from certain bands

  • Shamefully enough, only now I realized Stewart's not british.XD

  • @CUMBICA1970 Yo realized is the american spelling, xD

  • As a nobody drummer growing up in the seventies: I myself like Stewart were heavily influenced by Mitch Mitchell! They play to the music and not exclusively to the bass guitar.

  • Stewart's favorite drummer is Mitch Mitchell. Ginger Baker follows. And believe it or not, he digs heavy metal. Nothing wrong with that :).

  • He should have hit the interviewer with a hard hit

  • The Stewart of 25 years would have eaten this interviewer for breakfast... haha

  • But what about reggae? lol Idiot

  • lol he shoots down pretty much everything the interviewer says.. does the interviewer even know anything about music?

  • Looks like the interviewer came in with one question about 'reggae' and then realised he was in trouble. :)

  • Stupid interviewer! He (Copeland) looks mildly uncomfortable. He totally wants this interview to be over. I think it funny that the interviewer asks Copeland about Reggae like he wrote the shit.... Copeland had his own style. That's it. Great with hi-hat work and effects.

  • Hendrix, Cream, and Police FTW!

  • Sting is such a dick, but Stewart is so cool, who would have thought

  • fuck him hes a dick

  • @TROLLINGCENTRAL

    so are you.

  • @groethej HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YES! YES!!!! MORE !!!!

  • @TROLLINGCENTRAL calm yourself little girl

  • @triforce10155 no shutup hes a right prick. i mean, killing, 10 million jews? wtf?!

  • @TROLLINGCENTRAL Your kind of a retard arnt you. Stewart Copeland is not Hitler

  • @triforce10155 NOT HITLER. KYLUIE MONOGUE

  • @TROLLINGCENTRAL Either way, what the fuck does that have to do with a drum video

  • @triforce10155 EXACTLY

  • @TROLLINGCENTRAL If your going to attempt to be a troll at least try to make sense.

  • The interviewer is obviously the executive producer's nephew's gay eurobuddy he met one night at a hostel. HudsonMusic Fail.

  • I would kill to have 10 minutes with SC and this interviewer sounds like he is not a drummer and had never heard of SC until that morning.

  • Strange, he has no British accent at all anymore.

  • @TheWitchOvAgnesi - that's because he's not a Brit. ;) He's a Virginia USA boy, but spent alot of time in Europe & the Middle East while growing up.

  • @drums4life0326

    A-ha.

To be honest, while I love their music, I never really researched the members individually, I just assumed he was British and that perhaps he was now living in the States and parted company with the UK "dialect" (the "When in Rome" syndrome).

    Thanks for clarifying that!

  • @TheWitchOvAgnesi It's because, strangely, he's not british at all. He's an american that moved young to Egypt, than Lebanon ( mentionned at 1:40 ), and then when he went back to America, he moved to England.

  • this interviewer's a retard.

  • lmao! "i notice that you are a very hard hitter" "i try not to be a hard hitter i try to save the hard hits for speacial occations" the interviewer had him wrong the whole time lol

  • @ryanandbranslurppiss he does seem to hit hard. Have you ever watched him play and compared it to someone else play, like Jeff Porcaro or Steve Gadd? Stewart says he TRIES not to hit hard. That doesn't necessarily mean he succeeds in it.

  • That was cringeworthy. Stewart came across fantastically however, very erudite.

  • Lol this interviewer is an idiot.

  • i sort of in love with stewart. he is hot forever!

  • Hey...hey...REGAAE. RAGAAAAAAE!!!

    That guy was so weird.

  • This interviewer has some obsession with getting some Reggae confession out of Stewart Copeland.

  • LMAO! Terrible interview!!!!

  • why would they have someone who clearly doesn't play/knowanythingabout the drums interview Copeland?

  • "...allergic to jazz."? Well Mr. Copeland, jazz wasn't allergic to you. It's in you, sorry. The interviewer is annoying.

  • @Auntkekebaby He GREW UP allergic. He didn't say he's still allergic (and doesn't sound like it when he play!). Also, he talks about how taste changes with age.

  • Comment removed

  • wow this interviewer was so dumb... he didnt deserve to interview someone this smart... copelands experience is so wide, from the middle east to italy, to africa... how did this ignoramus prepare for this interview?!

  • Stewart Copeland is one of my favorite drummers. His sound is so crisp and clear, his speed amazing. He is a jazz and rock drummer, and also reggae, fused into one.

  • a notepad with questions? really? this is stewart f'ing copeland, you moron freak loser. come more prepared.

  • The interviewer makes me laugh its sounds like he has never really herd about THE Police.

  • This interviewer needs to find another job. He is so bad.

  • its clear that this interviewer knows nothing about drums, and he barely researched Stewart Copeland. either that or he is a social retard.

  • who is that interviewer?

  • worst interview ever... even though stewart copeland owned

  • HOW ABOUT REGGAE???!!!!!

You can tell at 00:59 he sounds annoyed

  • His treatment of this interviewer is amazing.

"I mean your typical reggae track is like, a drum solo, with somebody singing over it"

With how straight faced he said that, if I didn't know his personality I would have thought he was serious

  • Interviewer FAIL. ("Why cant this guy admit how much he likes Reggae???") ("Reggae???") ("But the Police were a Reggae band!") "How about reggae?"

  • howd he put up with that knob called sting?

  • .....How 'bout reg-gay?

  • "How about reggae...." what a noob fag LOLLZZ

  • hahaha HOW BOUT REGAI!!!!!!!!

  • charlie watts???????????????

  • @darzil007 Charlie Watts is cool too. Don't you like him or am I misinterpreting your comment?

  • did he say mick fleetwood?

  • yea

  • Stewart Copeland was American?

    Huh....

I guess you learn something new every day.

  • oh my god, worst interviewer ever!

  • You're not kidding, brother. The interviewer is awful. Instead of asking him questions he's putting words in Stewart's mouth. ''You're a hard hitter'' ''You're influenced by Reggae'' etc. Very disrespectful if you ask me.

  • along with bill bruford and phil collins, one of the great innovators of modern rock drumming. neil peart has sadly always been a follower and never a leader or inventor.

    Must have: The Rhythmatist

  • Bruford, right. It's hard to find, but "Music for Piano & Drums" with Pat Moraz. Great stuff. The Rythmatist is definitely must have. As for the interview, Copeland is such an iconoclast, he had that asshole's # in a millisecond, and wasn't about to reveal anything informative.TSR

  • jesus...is this the single worst interviewer you have ever seen in your life? god, this guy sucks...he has absolutely NO IDEA how to conduct an interview. it was actually painful to watch

  • hahaha they should show it to speach classes

  • i love the quotes "swimming in an ocean of the beatles" and "saving hard hits for special occasions"

  • what the? how is my tongue bein kissable is related to drumming?

  • The Police!!!!!

  • True that reggae drummers hit a lot of percussion and a lot of piccolo snare-type sounds

  • this interviewers a dick. he pisses me off

  • i mean its obvious u listend to a lot of REGGAE....uhm ya....

    HOWBOUT REGGAE!!!!??

    god someone shoot this interviewer

  • @gongfumaster ...lol!!

  • @gongfumaster well I think that was a really essential question, because Stewart's playing resembles very much of reggae. If he hadn't asked it, that would have been a lacking interview.

  • What a bad interviewer

  • @Slapbass7991

I agree. He asks the same questions over and over again. What an idiot.

  • Lebanese hills dance music rhythm... After 20+ years, someone finally asked the question and he answered. Amazing.

  • is very funny that many of greats musician cites like an unfluence a THE BEATLES and no body talks to much about the rolling stones well include the progressive rock musicians

  • mmmmm 100% cream....whipped?

  • 0:38 im really happy!

  • absolutely blows my mind that he can't name a reggae influence... He kind of even tried to dodge the question in my opinion. Not at all what I was expecting.

  • Erm is nobody listening here? He carved his OWN reggae style based on the Baladi rhythms of Lebanon. He usually placed a firm bass drum hit on the third beat of the bar and embellished it with complex hit hat work and splashes and octobans, which gave him his own uniqu sound back in the late 70's early 80's.

  • He probably likes anyone better than his bandmates...

  • this happens

  • @blondiebabae There is no way copeland can dodge having being influents by reggae . You can hear it in the music and as part of copelands style, but I think the interviewer missed what copeland tried to explain to him that he incorporated Lebanon and other styles of rock as well as reggae as fair as the Police is concerned.

Check out Oysterhead another band copeland played for and you will hear more styles and influence capeland plays.

  • Drsteve. I just came from watching two manu's. Thank you for mentioning him. I of course have heard of gabriel as a background. I always thought he was interesting but that the drums soundined triggered at least and sequenced as wellbut interesting real parts. never saw live or purchased any of his music.pretty much unaware. Manu is fabulous!!!Interesting is understatement. best sounding kit or one of in life.Weird but very workable grip. Tasty and groovey and tribal/tech. I like very much

  • I think Manu only appeared on the So Album but has become as much a part of the PG live entourage as Tony Levin and Shankar. There's a video of another drummer on the recent Up tour and it's just not the same......

  • Ok so he doesn't have any Hendrix influence after proclaiming to have only heard that over the beatles primarily. I agree about the good trad grip crack he provides. I applaud that as well. he does great , no wait IMO the best reggae I've ever heard!!!And he invented a quasi rock style around it too.I think he is truly a good/great drummer. But how on earth does someone leapto best drummer ever?Tthat astounds me. I like the Police a lot but c'mon.

  • His hi hat style was also breakthrough, I think for late 70's early 80's rock. So much so that he was drafted in as a session musician by Peter Gabriel for one track to play nothing but hi hat ! (Red Rain). Speaking of which Manu Katche is another drummer with a unique style (and grip !) watch him do a roll on the rack toms and look at his hand position - almost palm upwards !

  • Check out watch?v=b_Khs5zGrRo as a perfect example of what I'm talking about with Manu. Two brilliant interludes IMO.

  • Where na d when did Stewart copeland ever sound like Mitch Mitchell of Jimi Hendrix and Experience. I never heard it. Mitchell smokes the reggae only that I've heard one trick pony Copeland.

  • Why should he? Copeland's sound is unique and recognizable. He carved a 'signature' sound back in the 70's/80's. White reggae was unheard of back then. He is one of the few trad grip guys with a truely powerful back beat 'crack'. Listen to 1:10-1:22 he nails succinctly why your rants will always fall on deaf ears for the most part. Pulling Buddy,Palmer,Mitchell etc out of your arse at every turn will be meaningless to the majority of YT viewers. The music just won't fit their taste.

  • The interviewer is not being an asshole. Stewart comes across as condescending. The interivewer is ignorant.

  • Ringo Tarrd. That interviewer is being quite an asshole. Drop the reggae bullshit!

  • How so?

  • I knew I heard Mitch Mitchell!

  • This interviewer obviously doesn't deserve to be in the same room as Stewart Copeland. Why does he keep bringing up Reggae? I understand that it was an influence on The Police and Stwerart's sound, but Stewart makes it very clear that his style comes from Hendrix, Cream and music from his (then) native countries Lebanon and Egypt!

  • They score one of the best drummers of all time for an interview, and they get this clown to do it? -- You a hard heeeter!

  • The interviewer is a bit of a fool

  • I got that in the pocket 2 & 4 from Stewart. He does smack that but its just being in the beat, hard to express. But SCs 2 & 4 are what makes him so special. I saw him live a few years ago, I sat front row at NAMM about a couple before the Police reunion and was surprised that his snare hits were not as strong as I thought, I thought maybe age and injury caused him to lay off of that. Not sure. Be interesting to know.

  • he sorta reminds me of robert redford

  • of course you didn't listen to the beatles. You'd quite after a day playing ringo star. haha

  • ringo starr is written with RR and he sucks...

  • i dont give a shit how you spell it and i meant that you'd be bored out of your freakin mind. but way to go.

  • man that interviewer is a fucking idiot

  • it was hendrix and cream.

    hendrix and cream.

    How about Reggae?

    hendrix and cream.

  • looks like the interviewer didn't quite get what Copeland is all about

  • There you have it. Straight from the horses mouth - Arabic rhythms are the core of his style. Very unique.

  • Stewart is a rad guy.

But where the frick did they get this interviewer? lol. "But what about the reggae!!?!??!" Sounds like a borat interview

  • awesome i like stewart alot he seems like a really cool guy

  • this guy is so full of shocking amounts of IT!!!

  • What a douche!

  • everyone talks about travis barker, neil peart, joey jordison. i mean this guy needs to be talked about he is one of the best. stewart copeland rocks

  • yeah i def agree, plus travis barker really isn't all that great

  • @michaelthe13th good post, but never pair peart's name with those other two again >.< haha

  • @mrfitness123 what the heck dude, travis barker is the 23rd best drummer in the world. copeland is 17th. pearts awesome but still, he isnt the best to me.

  • @michaelthe13th hey fucktard, those are just numbers....it's up to the listener to decide. now go back to your mommy's basement and continue playing with your penis while trying to imitate that big loser named travis barker. GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF YOUR CHODE, YOU DUMB DIDDLER!

  • @meccaturbo obviously you are a fagget who doesnt care and appreciate music. we have opinions. so go back and study your music buddy. and i didnt know an 11" cock was a chode. so fuck you needle dick, cock sucking no good son of a bitch. dont be starting shit over my opinion of drummers. bitch.

  • @michaelthe13th you obviously know nothing about music...to even think Travis Barker is on the same level as Stewart Copeland shows just what a retarded moronic loser you really are. Obviously your only music experience is playing with your Rock Band toy game in your mommy's basement while you jerk your chode to kiddie porn. You're a total loser. Get an education about music, you fucking retarded twat.

  • @meccaturbo you keep talking about my mom and dad. that all you talk about. get a life! and yes, travis barker is good. so is stewart copeland. but travis barker is 35 years old. he started playing when he was 4. so 1979. stewart started playing in 1976. 3 years diffrence. and travis barker took lessons and tought himself. stewart just tought himself. so they have played 3 years apart from eachother. your just mad because barker is the shit. you honostly dont know what your talking about.bitch

  • @michaelthe13th actually I do know what I'm talking about. You're a 21 year old retarded loser who wasn't even born yet when the Police were in their heyday. Stewart Copeland is a far better drummer than Travis Barker, and that's not just my opinion. Every music survey I've ever seen rates Stewart Copeland in the top 5 drummers of all time. No way does Travis Barker even make that list. The fact that you'd even think they're in the same league shows what a loser and a faggot you really are.

  • @michaelthe13th furthermore, your facts are wrong. Stewart didn't start playing when in 1976. Why don't you get a copy of "Strange Things Happen", by the man himself, and it explains in clear English that he started playing long before 1976. Try getting the facts from Stewart himself, in the book he wrote, instead of making up lies, you fucking retarded twat. Your arguments mean nothing when you like like that, you faggot.

  • @meccaturbo well i saw a video of him on here and he said he got his first real kit in 1976. and started playing? maybe im confused. but when i see the police play live, its not as exciting as barker is. he is, to me, a better drummer. he wasnt even raised to play punk. he played funk and world music. mostly jazz though. and he is obviously great at it.

  • @michaelthe13th I just checked my copy of "Strange Things Happen" and it says he started taking lessons with a drummer when he lived in Lebanon, in the early 1970's. Before that, his dad taught him the trombone and he played in a jazz band. You obviously haven't watched the Police play very much....what other drummer plays traditional grip and makes the hi-hat sound the way Stewart does? It's cool if you like Travis, but I think anyone who says he's better than Stewart has their facts wrong.

  • @meccaturbo well i will admit. he is very good. and hate to say it but probably is better the travis. but i do like travis alot. and i like him more then copeland. i will watch more police videos and my mind might change on whos better. sorry about the names and shit.

  • @michaelthe13th it's all good man....it's good that all of us are out there listening to music, keeping the music alive. I definitely recommend Stewart's book, I just got it for my birthday and it's excellent....a lot of info is in there that I didn't even know about him. Sorry about the names too, I got carried away as well.

  • @meccaturbo its all good. and i might get the book.

  • @michaelthe13th check this out, on Youtube, for some fine drumming. watch?v=ciKA3SGXu4A

  • Comment removed

  • The interviewer is a complete moron who obviously knows nothing about drumming, or who stuart copeland is.

    unbelievable

  • Oh, shit. He Copeland American??!! I thought all these guys were all English. How did they hook up?

  • One word "LEGEND"

  • i remember couple years ago on some late night show they had the police play and Stewart BROKE the batter head while playing "it looked like someone punched it" and kept playing until his tech changed out snare in less than 5 seconds .. it was funny to see because he was hitting bottom head through top head but the audience never knew a thing! Your average listener doesnt pay attention

  • man some of the stuff he plays on that hi hat just sounds so sick. he is one of my favorite drummers

  • "your average reggae track is a drum solo with some guy singing over the top of it."

what the fuck is he talking about?

  • Haha, yeah I was wondering that!

What the fuck reggae was he listening to??

Mind you, he plays reggae like the best of them.

  • is that a practice set? where could i get one of those?

  • It's a "Thomas LAng practice set" - available from Remo.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY

  • Grande Stewart!! Unico!!!

  • How could he grow up NOT listening to Buddy Rich? He's a good drummer, but listening to Jazz would have made him a hell of alot better.

  • Good drummer? How about great? I've met Buddy Rich twice. He was an asshole. Perhaps the greatest drummer to ever live as far as big band music, but you can become a great drummer w/o ever listening to Buddy. It is unfortunate but Big Band is dead. I loved Buddy's playing and I still listen to it but if you want big band inspiration from a truly nice fellow then try Louis Bellson. I met him as well & own one of his cymbals. Copeland was amazing from the very first Police record, their best.

  • Well I think its very hard to say whos the best drummer in the world?!
