What a wonderful Video! Nice, that your mother taught you many Songs. I as well know this this song from my father, who was a fabulous bass. And then i can be proud to write that the late Elisabeth Schwarzkopf taught me so much about singing. Thank you very much Dame Elisabeth! May God be with you!
This song has always reminded me of my wonderful Mother, Ilona. She was loved by any and everyone who knew her! She was a very giving soul, and although she worked very hard all her life, she shared our meals with anyone who knocked on our door! The hard times everyone had during the great depression years, particularly! My youtube name is dedicated to her. She passed away at age 56, coincidentally 56 years ago!
I think there is some confusion here regarding the understanding of what is meant by the great dramatic operatic roles. Elizabeth sang many operatic roles superbly but I cannot identify her greatness with roles such as Norma, Aida, Leonora, or Tosca. Her husband Walter Legge recognised her strengths very quickly and weaned her to the roles that quickly became identified with her. She was one of the truly great sopranos and in the repertoire in which she excelled, she was unrivalled.
"Elizabeth's repertoire did not extend to the great operatic roles but in her field of operetta and as a singer of songs such as this, she was unrivalled. "
she sang a Marschallin, a Contessa, and nearl;y all the big Richard Strauss soprano roles. You're totally confused.

I gather her husband told her she had a Czech soul after she recorded this. Her favourite piece was Smetana's Mavalst. She said her father went around the house singing this [ Ma vlast}
