@johnairlines8 They are the safest aircraft in the sky, for sure. Although it wasn't an autothrottle problem, the AT worked fine. The heat exchangers didn't work properly and tiny ice crystals clogged up the fuel lines, not allowing the engines to develop power above flight idle.
@blueb0g shipping with faulty components doesn't exactly qualify them for the safest aircraft in the sky. Unfortunately the only other candidate, the a330 doesn't exactly handle super cooled water to well, although I think as far as mechanical faults go the a330 DOES have the best track record, and the only mechanical failure I can think of was because of poor maintenance (that one that dumped it's fuel and glided into the azures if I remember properly).
@Imprezaman555 Every aircraft has something dodgy mechanically, and just because an a/c has one doesn't make it unsafe... Your A330 argument however is flawed - AF 447, after all, came about after the Thales pitot tubes failed (as has happened numerous times).
@Imprezaman555 Plus, the problem with the 777 was due to the heat exchangers in the Trent 800; the same problem existed on the Trent 700's, e.g the engines used on the A330.
@DeadlyInertia No no, you didn't get carried away there... that was him who did! I just saw that comment of yours on its own and was a bit confused, that's all.
i live 10 mins from gatwick and the flightpath for landing is directly above me... i saw this massive emirates plane land earlier - would this be a 777 300 or 200? thanks :)
@greengoblin200 I asked "GatwickSpotting" about this, as he knows more about London Gatwick than I do, and he said it was likely to be a 200ER, but if it had ranked wingtips then it was probably a 300.
@blueb0g You can spot a -300 by the exit door over the wing, which the -200 doesn't have. The -300 looks really long (242') - the 209' long -200 looks short in comparison to the -300.
The raked wingtips mean this is a -300ER.
Raked wingtips on a -200 would make it an LR (the -200ER doesn't have them)-only the ultra long range -200 LR does.
The -200 LR and -300 ER are both built on the same basic wing structure.
This is cool w w boeing com/commercial/startup/pdf/777_perf.pdf
@StratMatt777 the ER also comes only with GE90 engines, so if you happen to see a 300/200ER without GE90's you will know its not the 300ER or the 200LR
@JohnMaxGriffin The -200ER doesn't have raked wingtips. Only the -200LR and the -300ER do. And you can tell the difference between -200's and -300's by the length.
@JohnMaxGriffin Emirates are the only airline that operate every variant of the 777. The have 777-200 (A model) 777-200ER, 777-200LR, 777-300, 777-300ER, 777-300ER/ULR (Has a higher MTOW and option to bump up the engine thrust for take off) and the 777-F. 94 in the fleet at the moment with 2 or 3 arriving before the end of the year! 2 engines are the way forward!
I saw a Ryanair 738 Go-around a few weeks ago. I was at the Multi-storey so it was quite close (not to mention loud!). I saw a Lufty a319 go-around in 2007 as well. Exciting stuff!

@ferark Well that problem only exists on the Trents, and yes it's fixed.

@blueb0g both the 200ER and the 300ER have raked wingtips, but Emirates only has 6 200ER's vs. their 54 300ER's, so it was most likely a 300ER.
