  • i wonder how many fender jazzmasters&jaguars they have between them?

  • Lee is singing great, but Kim is totally off key :/

  • what year did he say? he just mumbled

  • @KentAllard 1993

  • @KentAllard But actually looking on wikipedia Sonic Youth was on the show December 1992. That's probably why he mumbled the year as he wasn't sure.

  • For some reason this song is always stuck in my head while im at school. What album is it on?

  • Incendiary performance...and those legs! No chance of Thurston Moore ever suffering from erectile dysfunction...Lol

  • fucking depeche mode and sonic youth in the same room! wow

  • tienen un ritmo unico, muy buenos

  • I wish Lee was my Dad!

  • @zimzum5000 I wish Kim was my Mum...or my sister...or just in the same room for five minutes...I would.

  • Hahahah. I don't think the guy remembers when they were on, or even when his own show started.

  • This band is awesome!!!

  • "...on one of our first series of our shows to be broadcast in 19fnsmsh, please welcome Sonic Youth!"

  • 白髪なのにかっこよすぎ

  • More like Sonic Elderly.

  • @stigler30 actually, it's Sonic Pensioners. But they still kick more arse than most musicians younger than them

  • @Sabstheking

the youth in the name came from all the reggae singers of the time incorporating 'youth' in their name

  • The Greatest Rockadroll Swindle.

Every Time And everywhere:)(kha, kha, kha):))))))))

  • Thurston's guitar melody is just insane. It's so different to the one Lee kicks in with and Mark on the bass yet it fits perfectly. Only Sonic Youth.

  • if kim keeps singing out of tune thurston should fire her.....

  • my fucking god this performance is amazing.

  • Lee Ronaldo is a God

  • happy birthday Lee

  • happy birthday Lee.

  • kims legs <3

  • young old sonic youth

  • fanastic song, fantastic preformance, helped by good mixing.

  • Off the topic but did anyone else notice how jools holland just mumbled over the date at the start............... funny

    Sonic youth....(yes) definitely not (no)

  • 4 moustros!

  • Did the album name have anything to do with the Joy Division song, "The Eternal"?

  • I like how Lee sounds just as good here as he did back during the days of Daydream nation.

  • @NecroButcher91

Good point. Though I've never been a big metal fan, I always have my mind open to something refreshing and new. But unfortunately I haven't met a whole lot of metal fans who exceed the common stereotypes.

  • they sound amazing live

  • sonic youth are just so cool - dont you find that jools holland consistantly has decent bands on - i think depeche mode were also playng this gig.

id like to go be in the studio audience sometime

  • @Swedishmetalupyours

surely a metal head has no capacity to understand artistic relevance in music, only looking for "badass guitar solos". you obviously don't know what hipster music is, because sonic youth is not it, and if you want to hear SY at their best, check out the songs from daydream nation, sister, or a thousand leaves. beats the hell of yngwie malmsteen if you ask me or anyone else with a respectable taste in music.

  • @shoekstra1419 While I'm sure the person you are flaming is probably every bit as much of a douchebag as you make him out to be, you certainly do not reinforce your argument by dismissing his preferred music on the basis of stereotype. Heavy metal is a very diverse style of music with many legitimately creative artists, and it is perfectly possible to enjoy both metal and stuff like Sonic Youth. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is a band which manages to blend metal with avant-garde very well.

  • @shoekstra1419 cmon buddy ure saying were respectable taste in music? yuk who gives a fuck i just love this wether its a hip hip thing to listen or not

  • @shoekstra1419 you obviously don't know what metal is!

  • Hey uploader, why don't you fix the aspect ratio?

  • what does Hipster mean>?

  • Who'd have thought they're all 72 with free bus passes...

Just kidding...they never fail to surprise me with the quality of their music.

  • this hipster crap fucken sucks. No trolling, just wanted to hear this everyone talked about.

  • @swedishmetalupyours wrong start into Sonic Youth.

  • No music now has any fucking passion anymore. Now thats real music here!

  • and none of you douchebags mentioned marc ibold on bass! come back pavement!

  • STICK YOUR FINGERS IN YOUR MOUTH SQUEEZE YOUR TONGUE AND WRENCH IT OUT! 'CAUSE IT'S A ROTTING FUCKING CANCER!

    SONIC TOOTH

  • @19stuart73

I know that song its from the confusion is sex album, but I cant recall the title :p

    I love Inhuman though.

  • @slumberjammer funny that the song is called CONFUSION IS SEX! lol ... im laughing with you not at you

  • Sonic Youth are beyond rock listen and learn.

  • Thurston and Lee are one of the best guitarist duos I've seen live ever

  • If you like this bassline, check out Fiend Club by The Misfits. :)

  • omg...I just came in my pants..."the best Jerry ... the best"

  • @blacklab420

I've got a remedy for getting rid of Ovaltine stains, but not that.

  • I LOVE SY

  • @AyahuaskaPop And I love Kim Jong-Il

  • I love it... Osheaga 2010 - SONIC YOUTH - I'll be there... AMAZING

  • yeahhh, chingón !!!

  • The only reason Jools didnt say the full year was because the last time the band was on his show was 1992, which is obviously a long time so he was just making a joke of it.

  • SY are getting even better with age!

  • I likey!!!

  • still at the top after so many years!! i´ve no doubt, they are still the best out there

  • i hope they keep rocking till they are 80

  • What? The Sonic Youth? They're not allowed to age!

  • this song rekindled my luv for SY

  • that shud cut off there dead weight.

  • Awsome song.

    Please check out my song

  • 19fffttttty?

  • thurston is such a badass

  • these guys are like 50 years old and they fresher, more exciting music then every new americ

  • an band!

    lol hit enter too quick

  • when i saw this guys playing this song at tucson it was fukin awesome 10000 times beter than the album

  • young guys used to mosh this ....

  • Oh,My gosh! Damn Legend!!!!!

  • damn these guys are good. O.o

  • Simply a pleasure to watch live.

  • First rule of sonic youth is don't ask about the guitars.

  • to be honest i never considered any of them as great singers. buy sy are so much more about the sound than the vocals

  • Shelley is such a great drummer.

He pleasantly surprises me every time.

  • lee ranaldo is fucking greeeeeeeeeeeeat

  • Yes, he is. But Thurston is great also.

  • @drg88drg cool too.

  • do you guys know what guitar effect they use for this song? specially on the bit they play up and down the neck really fast...

  • they just turn the amps up to 11 and play in strange tunings

  • They remain so brilliant! After all those years they are active. Respect for SY!

  • I'm gonna see em on sunday in dublin.... can't fuckin' wait!

  • its a cosmic pleasure!

  • ****ing brilliant.

  • fuckin awesome takes me back to goo and dirty

  • yeah , jools says "in nineteen mszzznny"

  • lol lol lol,....... he actually does say nineteen mszzznny

Think he is drunk or something

  • Nah...I didn't get that impression. It's been a long long time since they started and he may have been trying to be funny and/or polite.

  • He said it like it has been a long time, As in the show, and him are old.

  • haha l hit repeat like 10 times...then read the bottom and thought..sweet everyone thought that too....i got 19th century..but who knows ol jools

  • they will always rules¡¡¡

  • is it just me? or does jools holland have no idea when they appeared because he said ''nineteen ninety hmphh'' in 3 of these videos

  • i thought he said 1958 for a second

  • One of those (I forget which) was him mocking himself :)

  • God I would of liked to have been there in 19znnzzz...

  • love this band!

  • I fucking love that bassline!

  • @DanBL0N00 ibold is the best thing that couldve happened yo SY

  • How does one acquire Thurston's tone, mxr blue box or something?

  • yes actually its been on his pedal board since 1989, that and a Turbo rat does the trick

  • That bass line is the same as fiend club by the misfits

  • The girl should just stfu. It's not the studio, lol.

  • I Love Chaos is written on Thurston's Guitar! For a second I thought it was my name I Love Charlie! Lolz! Anyways, amazing song, one of my favorites on the Eternal!

  • That was fucking great!

  • what was?

  • the song.. the performance...the whole video in general

  • sonic youth is probably the only rock band to be around for 30 years and still be making music this fresh and amazing;blows my goddamn mind!

  • Arguably one of their best in the last decade. This live version is pretty impressive too, almost something entirely new with that solo halfway through.

  • great..that what sonic youth is..

  • err, that riff is identical to fiend club by misfits.

  • Not identical, just similiar- more hold on notes and general change in timing! Good enough to skank, but doubt me Youth did it purposefully! Keep it egg cool!

  • the riff is ridiculously similar.

  • only difference is that sonic youth made a song around it and missfits just jangle a little bit

  • have you even heard fiend club? it's alot more metal and well produced than the original misfits you're probably thinking of. listen to the song i'm comparing it to and then make a comment, fool.

  • yeah i checked it out after i read the first comment

i checked out the song and indeed the bass line is kinda simular, but it's just kinda boring the song there's nothing to discover

  • closer to we are 138 but whatever

  • this and walking blue, my favourite songs from the eternal, and i dont think its any coincidence that they're both lee songs

    whole album is incredible tho

  • Fucking love it!

  • I love the gesture Lee does at the end of the song. Classic.

  • what a song, what a band...

  • what year waz it? lol

  • Haha i heard that too, "19mizi3!"

  • this year.

  • 2009 ^^

  • it was 4 billion BC, then later it was 79 AD, then 1437, then 2001, and that is how we have ended up here, in 2009. Does that help?

  • they get better with time, after almost 30 years that is quite a feat and they started out pretty great too

  • mmm noisexrock mmmm...

  • i love guitars

  • They make guitars cry and scream, fucking great

  • Why try to describe what words cant describe....sonic youth its more than a band,a music or a sound,,,its an orgasmic feeling,a cosmic energy, something that makes us all reach the impossible...thank u sonic youth for make me feel all this

  • This one didn't air on the unabridged broadcast of the show. What gives?

  • It's not "unabridged". Tends to be an extended version, and sometimes songs from the live version get carried across, but not always. They might not have been able to fit it in. Taj Mahal's song(s) was(/were) quite long, if you remember :)

  • Upon further research (on Wikipedia) I can now make sense of what you're saying. There is a half-hour live show on Tuesday and then a hour-long taped show on Friday. So I guess this performance aired on Tuesday but not Friday. Which means that the longer episodes billed as "unabridged" are actually NOT.

  • what a songg!!!

  • Cliche Sonic youth? This sounds nothing like any of their other records. the thing about Sy is that they always sound different while quintessentially remaining the same.

  • Exactly. They stay true to experimentation and unpredictability, which is why they're so amazing.

  • This is one of the best songs on the new album.

Can't wait to see them live :)

  • this album is fucking great. RR was awesome too.

  • and Poison Arrow... uff

  • Sonic Youth are back to being themselves after Rather Ripped. :)

  • kim gordon today is fuckin hot

  • great! Lee is such a good guitarist

  • ... and that's why they are my motherfucking favorite band

  • It was 1992.

  • 30 years into a great career, with high quality throughout, how is it possible they continue to get better? but they do! the eternal is strong and consistent start to finish.

  • Kim rocks it hotter than ever :)

Can't wait to see them in July :)

  • One of my favourite drummers ever. He always just kicks it..

  • Im amazed Ibold is using a Jag Bass.

  • Man, that's a P-Bass.

  • Yeah my bad I meant to type isn't.

  • Really? I thought The Eternal was a huge step up for Kim. She's actually kind of the "lead singer" on this album and does a good job IMO. I would say Thurston's performances are a bit weaker than his average though. Lee's great on this song but Walkin Blue isn't nearly as great.

  • I think its an amazing album altogether , i think out of all of them Kim is the weakest singer. Thurstons songs were good but there are better ( Antenna is amazing ) , but my favourite 2 songs of the album are What we know and Walkin blue

  • did you ear massage the history??

  • 10 minutes to complete trip.

  • yes really nice trip!!

  • lee really plays amazing guitar

  • Jools forgets the year!

    NINETEEN....zree...

  • watch the sacred trickster video, its even worse.

like if you fuck it up once, dont try it again! (or google the year :P)

  • The time on Sacred Trickster was a joke >.>

  • Lee's a kool dude ;) His songs are special. Love them all anyways... And Sacred Trickster is a monster.

  • I've always thought Lee was the best songwriter of the three (not that Kim and Thurston don't have plenty of gems), but, well, I agree with you. And "What We Know" and "Walking Blue" are two of the strongest tracks on The Eternal

  • yeah but i have the album out all the time cause im always listening to it :p

  • They´re so great!! Sonic Youth never die!!!:-*

  • yeah i found that a little strange the way the cd case was made. But the artwork is really great.

  • steve became a real fatso - still a hell ov a drummer

  • The video seems to be a bit stretched out to the sides like it's in the wrong aspect ratio, that gives Steve the appearance of having a big belly when they show him drumming from the side, I'm sure he's doing just fine.
