Although back in the sixties the Rockers were mostly out numbered by the Mods at least 10 to 1, it was common knowledge if an average built mod had a one to one fight with an average built rocker, the rocker was almost certain to win. That's why mods played it safe in large numbers, especially at seaside resorts.. I'm not biased, I actually liked Mods who were just into music and dance halls. The Rockers mainly worked doing manual labour , whereas most of the Mods worked in offices or shops.
@UKRaver1956 There were violent mods, the so called "hard mods" who s very short hair eventually got them the name Skinheads. They were mostly manual workers and used to battle with Hells Angels and the "Easy Rider" type bikers who mutated from the ton up boy type rockers we see in this video. This was in the latter part of the 60 s and into the 70 s.The skins were very violent, the more peacefull mods who were just into music and clothes got into pyschedelia and became flower power hippies.
@turquoisetandemcycle I certainly remember the punch ups between skinheads and Hells Angels. When skinheads weren't picking fights with them, they were picking fights with Asians. Certainly in the case of the more stylish Mods, by mid 1966 most of them had moved on and were starting to get more into the psychodelic phase
Having seen some of the old footage of night clubs in the 60s with both stobe and psychodelic lighting, It's ironic parallels are drawn between 60s psychodelia and 90s rave.
@UKRaver1956 The biggest irony is that nowadays those of us who are into retro pop culture/music respect each others scenes and share a common bond in the face of chav culture and shitty modern music. There is no animosity at all between Mods/Rockers/Skins/Punks.As a Mod i would much rather spend a night in the company of Rockers listening to vintage Rock N Roll and looking at old Brit bikes than in some horrible contempary club with a load of chavs listening to techno dance shite.
@turquoisetandemcycle I must admit. most of them these days who go to night clubs are usually off there faces with alcohol when they arrive and get even more so, once they've entered a night club. Twenty years ago I was in my mid thirties and the dance music was all fresh and just getting started. Now it's all watered down and .manufactured . Back in the day, I felt much safer at a Rave than in a pub or nightclub. The atmosphere was amazing and it didn't matter who you were or your background.
