This is such a sad song. But whoever wrote this did an amazing job.
I wonder how Britain was able to keep troops in Northern Ireland for almost 30 years without going bankrupt. The NI conflict must've cost Britain billions of pounds.
Ex RAF Regiment myself, having served in Northern Ireland, this song epitomises the whole truth of what we believed was the truth. We served to protect the innocent that was the goal, yet we were called scum throughout. For the love our nation! Yes, this song means so much to me. Thank you for putting this on here. may God bless and keep you safe!
Next year the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal will be presented to service personnel, emergency service personnel and prison officers with more than five years service. Theres no plans to award the medal to veterans, many of whom have given a lot more than five years service during the reign of Her Majesty.
This petition asks that the medal should also be awarded to veterans who served Her Majesty during her 60 years
As a British soldier with a mother from the South of Ireland, I find it sad that people died on both sides. But realise this. The Irish are welcome in any country in the world that I can think of and most people love them. The British are, not always, but more often than not, hated in the majority of countries. There must be a good reason for that! The IRA kill one British soldier and they are scum. Tony Blair kills up to 30,000 Iraq civilians and he is a hero? No wonder I'm confused!
The IRA were gangsters. Pure and simple. They raised funds by doorknocking Catholic areas, late at night. If the (often poor) residents did not give, petrol would be poured through the letterboxes in their front doors, and a lighted match would follow. Catholic neighbourhoods in Belfast could easily be recognised, as the letterboxes were all boarded over. The IRA terrorised the very people they said they were fighting for. There is no lower form of life. Gutless, worthless filth.
never understood why my dad would grunt when i asked him about the uvf and Ireland.some things he will talk to his grave ... no mater what they tell me at school or college ...when im called i will fight and do my duty for the crown... i will always remember the tears that this song brought to him due to them dirty fennien bastereds NO SURRENDER G.S.T.Q.
wow, im glad i found this, i had a vague recollection of this song when i was toddler in belfast at the turn of the 80's. A bit of googling and i found it. one of my oldest memories of a strange place to grow up.
... I'm surprised at all of you, both the Irish AND the British. You still see black and white, whilst that dead soldier boy saw a different color. He sacrificed himself for humanity, not for a flag. Not for a damned civil war, not for king or country. He took the biggest bullet of that conflict.
So Fuck all of you who say Up the 'RA or Rule Britannia in this video.
My Father Was mates with Sgt Willets and they served in Northern Ireland together, He used to tell us of this selfless act carried out, but rarely spoke about his tours of northern Ireland,
I grew up listening to this song, it's all my mum listening to whilst my dad was in Ireland in the 1970's. I have now been in the Army for 20 years and been to Bosnia, Kosovo, Ireland, Iraq and Afghan. Such a sereal song x
My father served in Derry in 76,this song was played so often on BFBS,in fact this song is my childhood.God bless all the military who have lost their lives in conflict. They are true heroes.
I went to school in the UK back in the early 90's, J4-3rd form. They NEVER taught us anything about the Troubles in NI. The teachers couldn't or wouldn't talk to us about it.
I found out about Sgt Michael Willetts today whilst i visited his grave with one of his fellow soilders. I could not believe how brave he was. He gave up his life to save others, which some people did not appreciate, which i found outrageous. Can't believe he was only 27 years old when he died, he had his whole life ahead of him. RIP.
I remember this well and after all this time I remember every word of the song too. His daughter should be very proud her father was so selfless and brave. So much fear, bitterness and pain existed for so many people on both sides of the community back then, changes are coming slowly. Respect to this soldier.
British Army, it's that word, British, not English, not Irish, British, we have enough enemies to fight without fighting in the ranks, lets sort the COLONISATION problem that we have.
i will never understand the bad comments made about the soldier who gave his life for so many people. he is in our hearts forever and a day and should be remembered for his bravery and his love for life that he sacrificed to let so many people live. just take a taught for his loved ones and remember him with pride as i do and always will. R.I.P my hero x starrmaker x
cannot believe those evil ungrateful bastards laughed. did they go and lay on the bomb to protect their own people? no. he didn't even know them and he still gave his life. its people like him that do the british army proud. rip sgt Willets.
I,ll never forgive them and never will,5 tours and I still don,t why, there all leaving Ireland now for a better life, not welcome in the North of England. We,ll be back you Irish scum.
the ira have a sense of taliban perseption that they are right and all others are wrong but as the brave hero said to kill your own is to disbelief all that you beleif in, god bless this sgt and his family, this short film/song makes you proud to british and shows to all that were a nation of great honour and bravery long live the crown, remember there is no ireland theres only ulster.
Bush told his own contracted ghostwriter (Mickey Herskowitz) in 1999, when he was not yet even the nominee, that if elected president he would invade Iraq. The reason? Score political points and secure high poll numbers. Bush confided his belief that successful presidents needed to win a war, and he thought Iraq would be an easy one
Credit to the maker but with the picture of the police station referring to "in a station in the city". It is incorrect. The station in the city is actually belfast central station where the soldier was killed
what a man what a self sacrifice look i am a brit and a scotsman but we have to look is a time say enough is enough there is a time when we have to say enough we both sides have a new foe the muslims and i fear we dont stand together sons of christ what ever our side we will take a beaten but i say this if they the muslims think we be beaten there wrong very wrong if they want a holy war bring it on and we will c this i promise long live christainty ................

Whilst serving in Norther Ireland in the early eighties the story ofthe immensely brave Sgt Willetts VC inspired us all, never was there any fear or threat that could silence a soldier as efectivly as this sad song,It was banned and the government wanted us stopped from listning to it
Oh yea we do love our enemies and pray for them but these IRA scum are more than enimies they are evil scumbags from Satan like their muslim pals and i know God would take them out and send them to their HOME IN HELL.
I adore this song always reminds me of my dad who was a Tank driver for 22 years in the army, we was in Omah Ireland in 73 and got are army quarters blown up by the ira, this always makes me think of him,,,he is my HERO xxx
The only response to terrorist's is to introduce a shoot to kill policy. We need to stop the human rights brigade if they lift arms against our soldiers they should beable to defend themselves. If the IRA had went toe to toe with the British Army they would have been wiped out over night. They took to the cowards way of waging war by planting car bombs. The British knew every single one of them and they should have been removed either by force or in body bags.
@CMMY81 i serverd with willets i was on patrol with my brick when this happened we where the first to get there and not a nice sight and yes they did laughe at what had happened
@whiterusta...., I hated the IRA !!!! the ira now govern NORTHERN IRELAND,i served 12 years in the british army,i will hate the scum till i die.they were nothing but cowards......
God bless Sgt Willetts. Its coming up to 40 years since his sacrafice. I urge all British peole to organize this song to make it to number 1 in the charts by next may as a symbol of respect and to show our enemies that the cry still is and will always be "No Surrender".
everytime i hear this, iam reminded of the sacrifice that this soldier made,
may god forgive the people who carried out this cowardly act, even though it happened many years ago manymore young men and women are still putting their lives on the line to-day, my thoughts and prayers are with them and their families and loved ones that they will return safely home.
I pity the poor soldier, everywhere and on every side. For it is lies that leads men to war, it is lies that shields their eyes from the truth, its all one world!
this song brings tears to my eyes ever time i hear it .... no more is this song true than now it my not be NORTHERN IRELAND that british and irish soliders are laying down there lives so we back home have freedom and sleep peacefully in or beds at night............ AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM..............
Thanks for posting, my wife was a close friend of L/Bdr Stephen Restorick. A big thank you to ALL the members of the British Armed Forces for all you do around the world.
This man showed exactly what is lacking from the Republican side-courage and decency. I have great respect for the Men and Women who served here during the Troubles.
I saw some awful shocking things. Now 40 years on and living on the other side of the world I'm still drawn to all this horror. Now, being away from it all I can see the futility of it all from a humantirian point of view. May God bless those on all sides; they all fought for what they thought was right......... who was right and who was wrong? The human factor comes into play... all involved were human beings fighting for their cause. None of them thought they were in the wrong.
@MAB4739.... know what you mean MAB, i served in the UDR, RIR, my best mate was murdered by PIRA. and for what ? not one life was worth ULSTER or IRELAND. god forgive them, i CANT.....
@jake22nd Yes he did, The G.C. highest peacetime bravery award, should have been VC in my books, but to get that the act has to be "in the face of the enemy" and as we all know, these scum are too cowardly to show their faces.
@jake22nd I believe he was posthumously awarded the George Medal - equivalent to the Victoria Cross for outstanding valour whilst not under direct enemy fire.
It makes you cry, what we as humans do to each other. Yet even though this depicts the horrors we do to each other, it also shows the selflessness and good that exists in all of us.
What hurts me most is the way they jeered at him after he died, despite the way he gave his life for their own kin.
Sigh, whenever I hear this, i strangely get a tingling a numinous feeling. I'm not religous, but its just one of those things.
the people who ncarried out this cowardly act cannot be called human, they think they have got away with this, but if they are still alive, they will have to be judged on the last day as we all shall be.
the people who ncarried out this cowardly act cannot be called human..their commanders now govern n.ireland, thats the reason i voted no for the GFA. to hell with n.ireland, ex forces belfast....
@OttoTheBlottoDog "What hurts me most is the way they jeered at him after he died,"
That is the nature of the craven fenian. The current top comment on this page challenges anyone to recall an account of Irish / catholic courage to match that of Sergeant Michael G. Willets (talk about an impossible task).
Look at "Big brother" contestant Steve, he served in Ulster. After the cowardly republicans remotely detinated the device that mamed him the local residents set dogs on him to maul his wounds
It's ALWAYS been one of my favourite tracks, and I'm truly ashamed to say (honestly) that for nearly 35 years years I hadn't known it was based on an actual event. I am in even more admiration for the song and especially for Sgt Willetts who's courage was inestimatable - makes no difference whether I agree(d) with the conflict or not - his heroism was indisputable.
He didn't actually lie on the bomb, he used his body to try to reinforce a door in order to protect the people from the blast which came from inside the (now empty) room which he had just cleared of people.
I did my bit with the British army in NI in 1977 and I was very moved by this video. However I do strongly object to the revolting image shown at 4:22.....I just pray that his mother never sees it!!! Otherwise a good video.
@dejay823 I know his daughter..Trudy..she lives in Mansfield she is good friends with my wife.......Trudy cannot listen to this track as it is too upsetting for her however she is the proudest daughter in the world...and rightly so.!! His Sgt Willetts VICTORIA CROSS is in the London Museum incase you may have wondered. God Bless His Sole.......
he got the George Cross, Victora Cross is for bravery in the face of the enemy and can only be won by members of the commonwealth's armed forces, the George Cross, however, is for bravery not in the face of the enemy, and can be won by civilians, my friend Mark Wright won it, postumously, in Afghan in 2006.
@st0kecity1.... Trudys father was a hero, he was murdered by cowards. i served in belfast for 12 years,my friend and fellow soldier was murdered by the same cowards. and now they govern n.ireland, hand ur head in shame tony blair....
it was the George Cross he got, the highest award for Gallantry not in the face of the enemy, the Victoria Cross is the highest award for Gallantry in the face of the enemy.
@st0kecity1 unfortunately he did not get the victoria cross it was the george medal which is basically the equivelant to the v.c. it does not matter what medal he got though, he is a far braver man than i will ever be and god bless his daughter
sgt willets was para regiment, he was the one and only British soldier who had the troops line the road for him as his coffin was drawn past springfield road RUC station, this happend before all the high walls and sangers were put in place. my mate was killed in divis flats in 87 and the scum clapped and cheered as he lay dead, just like in this song.RIP ian
ya dat soldier was a hero true n true,he didnt have ta do it,an im irish n proud ta be,stuff dat went on bak den was sickenin on both sides.dats what i thnk nyway

The British knew every single one of them and they should have been removed either by force or in body bags.

None of them thought they were in the wrong.

tomdkg 1 year ago
@jake22nd Yes he did, The G.C. highest peacetime bravery award, should have been VC in my books, but to get that the act has to be "in the face of the enemy" and as we all know, these scum are too cowardly to show their faces.
clive6356 1 year ago
@jake22nd I believe he was posthumously awarded the George Medal - equivalent to the Victoria Cross for outstanding valour whilst not under direct enemy fire.

It makes you cry, what we as humans do to each other. Yet even though this depicts the horrors we do to each other, it also shows the selflessness and good that exists in all of us.
What hurts me most is the way they jeered at him after he died, despite the way he gave his life for their own kin.
Sigh, whenever I hear this, i strangely get a tingling a numinous feeling. I'm not religous, but its just one of those things.

@OttoTheBlottoDog
the people who ncarried out this cowardly act cannot be called human, they think they have got away with this, but if they are still alive, they will have to be judged on the last day as we all shall be.

the people who ncarried out this cowardly act cannot be called human..their commanders now govern n.ireland, thats the reason i voted no for the GFA. to hell with n.ireland, ex forces belfast....
TheChelseafc2010 1 year ago
@OttoTheBlottoDog "What hurts me most is the way they jeered at him after he died,"
That is the nature of the craven fenian. The current top comment on this page challenges anyone to recall an account of Irish / catholic courage to match that of Sergeant Michael G. Willets (talk about an impossible task).
Look at "Big brother" contestant Steve, he served in Ulster. After the cowardly republicans remotely detinated the device that mamed him the local residents set dogs on him to maul his wounds
saxonenglish 1 year ago

@st0kecity1
he got the George Cross, Victora Cross is for bravery in the face of the enemy and can only be won by members of the commonwealth's armed forces, the George Cross, however, is for bravery not in the face of the enemy, and can be won by civilians, my friend Mark Wright won it, postumously, in Afghan in 2006.
