  • Gary Rossington and Allen Collins two great guitarists.

  • whats the beef with Neil Young?

  • @xaxa835 Neil Young wrote a song titled "Southern Man". In it, he describes slavery from a third-person perspective. In SHA, Lynyrd Skynyrd dismiss Young's criticism of slavery and Southern culture before the Civil War.

  • @epituchano thank u so much for explaining it to me ,i've been wondering about that for years and asked many people thru out the years and no one knew .thanks

  • i got no problem puttin' a 7.62 in yo mellon -- puss

  • stop global whining.

  • HELLO, I'M A PROUD SOUTHERN SPANISH FROM THE SOUTH OF SPAIN.

    Long Live Extremadura.

  • HERITAGE NOT HATE

  • I didn't miss your point at all. I clearly stated that Blacks get just as much crap for speaking their minds as Whites. Are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton taken seriously these days. Hell no, because they say some stupid shit. But ultimately who is "the state"? White people. Who are the majority? White people. Who has the most influence in Congress and the White House. Yeah yeah... Obama is Black but he is also White. So who's wrong here?

  • RACISM = STUPIDITY

  • i love you

  • 24 wiggers came on this video to give a thumbs down to fucking bad !!!some of us are proud of out history, there nothing more racist than a racist calling country and southern music racist

  • Isn't it amazing that a flag can create so much controversy.......I have followed Skynyrd their whole career.....They have never said or done one thing racist.....Why people want to drag a dead man down i will never know.....My black friends that worked hard have just as much or more than i do.....They never played the race card.....They just worked their asses off like i did....And kept their damn mouth shut like i did......We are all a slave to somebody.

  • it's about a friggin way of life , that was gone and past , before most of you were born.....you will never understand !

  • F*ck off to all the haters who are trying to stir up shit about racism on a music video.

  • Imagine if the south won the civil war.

  • I find it an irony me and my wife fight to defend free speech but only the minorites have the freedom to say what they feel, as commented on here the rest of us have the thought police on our backs. I am not racist or anything else but i am sick of my race constantly having to apologise for the past. My generation were not alive we comitted no crime. Maybe its me but common sense has gone out the window to political correctness

  • @bluesuitedone Very well put.

  • @bluesuitedone All I can say is too fucking bad. I'm half white and half black and don't blame anyone for my past. But the past did happen and black people are still trying to make up for a huge white head start. Don't get me wrong the race that hold's black folks back the most ARE black people but, you can't deny that over the past 300 hundred years black people grew up in the poorest places and had the shittiest education and it's wasn't by choice. White folks still rule this country.

  • @MrDookieBootie You missed the point. We aren't allowed to respect our ancestors openly or else minorities will harass us. We can't say "I'm proud to be White" or we'll be written off as racists. Many of our ancestors died for this country (more than all minorities combined) and we can't even express basic free speech.

  • @WhatssSoFunny Pure bullshit. You and I both know "White Power" is associated with white supremest. Blame them. Fact remains most of our Holidays celebrate white people. Most of grade school history deals with white people. Sure more white people died for this country. You know why? Ever hear of a little thing called the Civil War? Yeah... You died the most and killed yourselves the most. Not to mention tons of innocent people in Vietnam and Iraq murdered for politics.

  • @MrDookieBootie Haha see it's not bullshit at all. I'm talking about the shady holidays. I was talking about the civil war, i was talking about the: Revolution, War of 1812, SPanish-American, WW1, WW2, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq x2, Afghanistan. See you want us to be blamed for the wars yet you don't want us to take the honor of being successfull. You proved my point in your dumb answer.

  • @WhatssSoFunny Lol. If you think killing innocent people is "successful" then you're crazier than I thought. You want credit for wars you never fought in, because you weren't even alive. But you also don't won't to be blamed for the past. Make up your damn mind. "Shady Holidays" lol. What the hell do you want? Cry me a fucking river.

  • @MrDookieBootie SIgh...i should of expected you to be a fucking idiot. Just read my comment a few times. I'm sorry you're too stupid to actually understand.

  • @WhatssSoFunny The myth that minorities can say what they want is just that, a myth. Just recently Katt Williams was catching shit for what he said in his act. Tim Hardaway caught shit for talking about gays. Anyway... free speech works BOTH ways. No one's stopping you from saying anything. If the "thought police" (whoever the fuck they are) are on your back, who gives a fuck, it's their right to express there opinions under the same amendment.

  • @MrDookieBootie the thought police is a reference to 1984 ( book) and its not a reference to an individual its a dig at the state. You missed my point... I am a brit so I cant comment on USA. Here we crack down hard on the far right ( as we should) but it takes a lot more before we will act against the muslim clerics etc. Both incite hate and violence each way. Both need to be stopped from inciting riots, I wasnt refering to offensive comedians

  • @WhatssSoFunny BTW minorities fought in most of those wars.

  • @MrDookieBootie BTW in all there was an overwhelming white-minority ratio

  • @MrDookieBootie I never said that black folks didnt have it bad, the issues were not our finest hour and the slave trade was horrific and wrong. The standards of our ancestors was different whites believed black to be inferior ( wrong) and different clans waged war to cpture people to sell to the whites, but I never enslaved anyone and we are not our forefathers. I think its absurd for us to apologise. Now if our forefathers were alive then they should. I meant no disresepct to anyone

  • @bluesuitedone You committed no crimes of slavery or repression but that doesn't mean the affects of slavery and repression aren't felt by minorities in the present. Every Black person I know has never expressed any gripes about an apology. My Dad grew up in the deep south and experienced racism 10 folds worse than I have ever experienced. My Grandfather went through even more. Blacks were still considered inferior most of the 1900's. Hell the Civil rights movement was not too long ago...

  • @MrDookieBootie Hell you weren't alive then!

    LIVE NOW OR SHUT UP!

The way you ACT expresses the desire for an apology. Your words hear scream for one. Just shut up. Quit living in the past you!

  • @bridaco Go back and read all my posts before speaking out of your ass, Thank You.

  • @bluesuitedone A lot of whites act like assholes, and i'm white too. So yes, you are a racist.

  • @Fool12 Lmao well it seems I cant win. My wife is half french half persian and a pan arabic specialist. I get accused at work of being too sympathetic to Islam etc and now you accuse me of racism. I am nothing of the sort I just dont hold with the West constantly using positive descrimination at the expense of the native culture. All cultures have good and bad. The quote is when in Rome do as the romans do. there should be equality in speech for black white or martain. unfortunatley its not

  • @Fool12 you are a dumb christian liberal who can go shoot himself, WAIT, did i say "shoot yourself"?!, sorry, i see, no guns...

  • @bluesuitedone This song linked with irony really does remind me of Con Air... You do have a point though a black politian here made a comment about white people... that was okay but if a white person had that would have caused a huge fuss.

  • @epituchano If you're disrespecting this song, you do realise I will have to kill you.

  • Did the British of the time realize how blatantly racist this song is? Did the producers read the lyrics before airing this? Problem is, so much of the bigotry in this song is apparent only to Americans. Many of the bigoted references are coded. Whistle Test should've had an American explain the meaning of this song to them. It never would've been aired in that case.

Neil Young got it right about the antebellum "southern man", anyhow.

  • @epituchano The British knew, it's just freedom of speech.

  • @epituchano There is nothing racist about this song and remember it just a son. dumbas-.and you are the racist

  • @epituchano Apparently being proud of your home is blatantly racist now.

  • @toweringmatt I'm a proud New Englander, even though Boston profited indirectly from slave commerce. That is a moral failure that I recognize. It's okay to recognize the moral failure of one's homeland and still be proud.

Through SHA, Lynyrd Skynyrd has sent a veiled and possibly racist message. Dissing Neil Young's songs criticizing slavery and the treatment of African Americans, as well as criticizing George Wallace's change of heart, perpetuates prejudices.

  • @epituchano I didn't say that the South was perfect, I was just pointing to the fact that whenever someone who hails from the South is proud of it, somebody calls them racist. Proud Germans are not called Nazis.

  • There's a witchhunt in the USA. Everyone in America is watched by the Racial Gestapo. You have to hate certain things or else you're a RACIST or SEXIST pig. It's so sad there really is no freedom of speech OR thought in the land of the 'free'. One can't even state the truth for fear of offending people or being publicly ostracized by the Racial Gestapo. Truth is distorted, facts ignored or buried, just to make sure the Racial Gestapo continues to wield its power.

  • @plumeria66 You mean you can't be openly racist anti black? (sorry I m not American, I didn't really get your comment). If so, I totally agree with you, it became the same in Europe.

  • @cocardeux

Yes, it's true...you cannot. You could lose your job, get sued in court, or be shunned by all your neighbors and friends. It's considered a dangerous disease.

  • @plumeria66 I don't see myself as a nazi or an extremist, but I m sad to see that white people, especially the young generation, feel shame for their skin color. I hope it ll change!

  • @plumeria66 It's the same in Australia.

  • Screaming racism gets one nowhere.

  • @plumeria66 True, I didn't think this song was about racism .I think it's more about loving the south where you were born and raised.I was born and raised in Pittsview ,Alabama wouldn't change it for anybody. I'm a black girl love living in Alabama.

  • THE BATTLE FLAG!!!!

    SO misunderstood, soooooooooooo awesome!!!

  • zajebiste :D

  • there REALLY needs to be a sick dubstep version of this...

  • Is the lead singer retarded? Look at his contorted face--evidence for a fake, forced machismo. And how pathetic that a song tossed off by Neil Young and forgotten would become such a controlling obsession. All I can say... or should've said at the time: Get a life.

  • The Van Zants were (and are) a bunch of rednecks. But, they're from my neck of the woods, and I've always dug this song...PEACE.

  • i always thought that lynyrd skynyrd used strats

  • @Hellcommander245 Gary Rossington, the only original member still in the band, has always played a Gibson Les Paul everytime I've seen them, even in the 70's. Allan Collins usually played a Gibson Explorer and Ed King played a Fender Strat and King does the solos on the record of this song. King quit the band in Richmond, Va in the middle of a tour and Ronnie Van Zant never forgave him. I think King came back after Van Zant's death for a little while. Bur King was gone when this was taped.

  • @rururar or whatever. Grow up. This isn't a forum for your race agenda.

  • My favorite song after Freebird. Cruising down the 101in California with the windows down what southern rock was meant to be! Sweetness

  • @rurrurara789654 MUSIC HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE YOU DUMBSHIT

  • @rosepetal108 the fact that southern rock has more blues roots is just another example of white southerners stealing from black people and calling their own accomplishment

  • @rurrurara789654 Music is not about competition, and it evolves in many ways, Music is not about RACE, in fact, it is the one HOPE we poor souls have of uniting and evolving ourselves and putting things like race behind us.

  • i work in alabama and i am from the uk, the southern people are the best in the world, the food is ace and so is there music, rock on lynyrd skynryd, sweet home alabama baby!

  • WHY,S THE REB FLAG UPSIDE DOWN?????????????????

  • @Ian10sc Big flags usualy are...

  • @Donkeyn00b WHAT, BULL:.....THEY GOT IT WRONG

  • TURN IT UP

  • I'm icelandic. That's not in the south. We love Lynyrd Skynyrd up here. Stop your yappin' and kkep on diggin' the music.

  • okay the song is ronnie telling a story from his fathers time prespective not racism diffrent time diffrent perspective ronnie and most of skynyrd are from jacksonville florida gaines who was one of the first outsiders in the bad is from ok.think of it as merle haggard s okiie from telling a story from the prespective of his fathers generation

  • Who cares a monkeys about the politics? Every band is guilty of this, its just great music!

  • This song has nothing to do with racism, go find a hobby to anyone who says that. I am from Washington, one of the most liberal states. I am Conservative, Republican and proud for anyone who is proud of themselves. MAY THE SOUTH RISE AGAIN!!!!!!!! LYNyRD FOREVER.

  • This song has nothing to do with racism, go find a hobby to anyone who says that. I am from Washington, one of the most liberal states. I am Conservative, Republican and proud for anyone who is proud of themselves. MAY THE SOUTH RISE AGAIN!!!!!!!! LYNARD FOREVER.

  • @Queen4Ever21 actually it was because of the morrill tariff.

  • The South has its right to its heritage. People want to act like the Civil war was about slavery. Check your history, evidently you dont have a clue. Slavery didnt come into the picture until the north was losing and Lincoln added slavery as a issue for farther dispute. As far as the flag goes, it has been misrepresented as a racist symbol, thats far from the case its simply a southern state of mind

  • @sdeisme Check your history: The Southern states seceded from the US after the election of the Republican party member (=against slavery) Abraham Lincoln. Though Lincoln had no plans on abolishing slavery the South feared it. Then a couple years later Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery. :)

  • @sdeisme You sure got that right. Never a truer word spoken.

  • What a great band .Supposedly the lead singer wore a Neil Young T shirt when he was buried .Put paid to differences that may have been temporarily around at the time

"Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton,

Old times there are not forgotten, (Alt Original: Cinnamon seed and sandy bottom,)

Look away, look away, look away Dixie Land!!!

  • Really? no one need comment on their "origin"....shut it and listen, if you don't like it write your own song.

  • great song i dont care why he wrote the song its a great song and an even better representation of southern life

  • ΠΙΑ ΚΑΤΑΡΑ ΠΑΙΡΝΕΙ ΤΟΥΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥΣ ΤΟΣΟ ΓΡΗΓΟΡΑ.

  • @kwstas638rulos Yeah man! Totally!

  • The song is a real timeless classic but wassup with the Confederate Flag?...Why not the Nations Flag?

  • Let all the controversy go and enjoy a classic f****** song..RIP Ronnie

  • WHY DO RACIST ASSHOLES COME ON THESE SITES?! LOVE THE BAND, SONG, OR SOMETHING! STOP HATING!

    LONG LIVE DIXIE!!!

  • 1:14 is cool, but the best part is.... 0:01 through 5:37

  • I was watching them wondering if they knew this song would be such a classic, but I guess no one know's they are producing "classics" in their own time, do they? Sort of the definition of classic denies that

  • Ronnie was so short that you'd think he'd wear heels to make himself taller. But hell no! He sang barefoot so he could feel the heat of the stage! A true American legend and badass for sure!

  • gary's 'less is more' style plays just fine in ed' solo here

and allen carries the outro guit part out real nice

look i love eking and sgaines

but i still dont know why rvz always wanted that third axe in the lineup

    get his total shot

ed? he'll always have that sweet home alabama cachet not too shabby

    a privilege eh?

peace & thanks for the tuber

  • Imagine if this song were released today by someone not Lynyrd Skynyrd. We probably wouldn't know about it. If this sing were written and released today, it wouldn't be as popular because popular music today SUUUCKSS.

  • Oh the Joy!!! I watched this on the O.G.W.T at the time... god I feel old... But it always makes me feel happy!!!

  • stars n bars

  • I started playing this song (and 8-10 other assorted LS hits) on guitar in local cover bands approx. 1980...now 35 years later, these songs are just as popular and have more younger fans than nearly any other old rock group...including Zeppelin.

I've grown to ignore the song itself when I play it (sort of) because I've played it for so long, so many times. (the pratfalls of musicianship)

I'm glad to know that young ears can appreciate the older stuff (the smarter kids anyway)

  • 8 justin bieber fans came across this song by mistake

  • LOL retarded confederates, 'sweet home alabama' hahahahaha only thing you americans deserve is a fucking nuke on your ass

  • @belgian469 Is Belgium a legitimate nation? Or is it an artificial creation carved out of some strange impulses of control?

  • @belgian469 .....Jealousy is great stuff, eh? We love you, too!

  • chords are D,Cadd9,G...amazing song.... :D i love it..

  • as defined at lynyrd skynyrd? metal rock, southern rock, or what? please

  • @emileon61 Lynyrd Skynyrd is often described as "Southern Fried Rock," but I add elements of Boogie Rock to that, which means in the end LS are a really good rock and roll band..

  • Thank Ya!

    Sun

  • this song was played at my wedding and i played it

  • this song was played at my wedding

  • no comment about the vid.............. the song has always been and always will be AWESOME

  • Gary can't hold a candle to what Ed King played on the record. Les Paul's are good for some stuff...but just not the right instrument for chicken picking and B-bending.

  • Lynrd Skynrd is a mixture of country, rock, and soul. Great style!! Ronnie was sexy :)

  • RVZ!!!

  • Love LS. Was it true that RVS and NY were actually good friends?

  • @kady7869 Read about LS and NY in Wikipedia. LS admired NY. "Sweet Home" was just to remind him not to judge a whole state by a few idiots. NY wrote a song for LS but they crashed before it could be recorded.

  • God Bless the South!!.......nice one Ronnie

  • It's funny both LS and NY are my two favorites. Great music..lyrics..everything.

  • Ronnie is so clever. I love it!! Why did he have to go so soon :(

  • I just love Ronnie's style and especially his voice. It would have been so cool to see them live. I wasn't even born when they were creating these incredible songs. I can feel the music. Songs today aren't the same. None will ever compare to those of LS!!

  • I saw them live in 75, caught a drumstick after they sang Freebird, still love them!!

  • @nufreeotm Wow what a memory to cherish. That must have been some show. RIP Ronnie.

  • @nufreeotm you are so incredibly lucky. im 14 and i would die to get to see them. i settled for acdc when they played a concert here

  • everyone knows the South shoulda won...

  • People, please you have access to the internet. Look up Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd regarding this song, before ya'll jump into conclusion. No, Ronnie's wife already confirmed he's buried in a suit. No respectable southern woman would bury her husband wearing a tshirt. Young was never a pallbearer, but they respected each other. just read up on the whole thing

  • 1:18 was badass

  • Sweet sweet rock! Im Scottish, grew up listening to my old man playing 70's rock records and can remember seeing re-runs of Old Grey Whistle Test on tv.This was a real special & exciting time for music.Bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd need to be preserved for our future generations because there won't be nothin as good ever again (in my opinion).Music makes people unite...it's a beautiful thing! Thanks for posting these classic performances.I'm off to shred some licks on my guitar.Peace y'all. \m/

  • @frediablo I agreed. No music will created these days will ever be this good. LS has so many timeless hits..I love 'em..rip Ronnie

  • This song has saved my life on more than one occasion!!!

  • sweet home obama

  • @pinkfloyd1972d I knooow, im a latino too, and theyre fuckin ignorant people of they think that lynyrd skynyrd's southern pride its about racits, F them!

  • @conguitowsk So it was racist to suceede ? everybody knows the war wasnt about slavery how naieve you are it was about raw goods ie cotton we stoped selling it to them sold it over seas and they bought it from over seas for 4 times the amount Lincoln stated and I quote IF it waspossible I would end the war without abolising slavery fact is he needed the blacks to come and fight on his side to try and win the war revisionist history , if you dont learn the truth you will always be behind 8bal

  • @pinkfloyd1972d I am fron germany and have been here for about 12 years and this is my favorite rock band,,,,, rock is the universal music

  • @pinkfloyd1972d

my ex husband is a full blooded mexican american. he introduced me to skynrd when i was a young girl. and his brother introduced him. there is no race when it comes to music. my grown adult mexican/swedish/russian american kids love skynard too. mama and papa taught them well.
