It is remarkable to think that this very sophisticated work was composed by a very young Berlioz as part of his exams for the Prix de Rome, and considering its daring, it is no wonder that this piece did not succeed (though he would win the prize eventually). It is marvelous, as well, to hear in this piece an early treatment of one of the themes from the Roman Carnival Overture written years later. As far as I'm concerned, Janet Baker owns this piece hands down! Thanks for posting.

Merveilleuse! Thank you again for posting this superb performance by Dame Janet and the LPO/Gibson. I am not a Berlioz fan, but I could listen to this for hours.

Ceci est un exploit vocal...ce n'est pas étonnant qu'il n'y ait pas d'enregistrements français de cette oeuvre sur youtube....avant que les francais commencent à critiquer Janet Baker qu'ils cherchent leurs compatriotes qui ont réussi cette oeuvre?...! Ceci pousse Baker à ses limites et c'est tout simplement merveilleux ! je le dis encore....un exploit vocal et fabuleuse interpretation....
