It's a shame his comeback made his ppg lower than Gretzky's, but I still think he's a better player because I don't think even Gretzky could come back from cancer and play at an elite level. I just don't see Wayne having that much heart
The Pens basically stole the Rangers intro from 1991.
Like they stole Lemieux himself from what would have been the Devils, by INTENTIONALLY tanking the last 20 games by scratching all of their healthy starters and bringing up kids from the farm team so the team could lose and draft Mario.
What a great franchise, thinking of itself first and the fans last. Oh wait, the Pens have no fans, just bandwagoneers.
I was at this game .... my parents and I decided it was time for us to go to a game ..... we bought our tickets to that game way before he announced .....then he comes on tv and says ....coming back from retirement ! ;-) I was like 11......man what an experience ........

@akbar232323 hey I think wayne was a very good player!!!!one of the best play makers too ever play the game!!!but mario was more offensively gifted(pure goal scorer)by the way I grew up watching him too on that oiler team, it was something else but after he left well........to say the teams he was traded to had nobody is so far from reality both LA and ST.Louis had a good supporting cast and the rangers still had messier and some of the 94 team players still there so????
The only thing I'll say about this is that Mario came back not because he owned the team, or because the team was a sure bet for the Stanley Cup. When people asked him why he came back, it was "because my son Austin wanted to see me play". He could have told him no, and told the fans no, and no one would hold it against him.
But you know what? Mario wanted to come back. He's a competitor - and even in his thirties, with modest talent around him, still put up superb stats. All for his son. :)
@MrBarelylethal 66 > 99. Gretzky didnt miss 513 NHL games due to injuries like Mario did, Gretzky started his NHL career on a great team already, Lemieux didnt and lead them to the cup. Doctors said lemieux played 75% at his best during most of his career because of injuries. Lemieux had a better goals per game then gretzky by 0.15 despite battling injuries his whole career. lemieux > gretzky nuff said
And who were the great players on the great team the 1st year Gretzky played? The Oilers sucked, they were an expansion team and finished 11 games below .500 (and Gretzky won the mvp that year).
And, according to your logic, the more injuries you have, the better you are. Isn't hockey a sport where health is important?
You really made me laugh with all your stats, you prove you know nothing.
@Irato99 The first year Gretzky played was in the WHA smart one. He started with Indianapolis and was traded to Edmonton, where he was 2 games away from the final Avco Cup, won by Winnipeg
Yeah, your right about the WHA and I know that. But I was talking about the guy who said Gretzky started his NHL career on a great team already, this is obviously not true.
@Irato99 Mario had 91pts in 67 games in 02-03 at the age of 37 on a team that finished next to last in the conference. Gretzky never proved that he could play just as well in the current game as he could back then. Mario did. Scoring in the 2000's was much harder and Mario, with his shitty team, was dominating the scoring race until he couldnt finish the season. He ended up 8th. Mario was the best player to ever play in the NHL and Gretzky was # 2 or 3 depending on how you feel about Orr.
man, I remember watching this game, and even as a leafs fan, I remember thinking that that goal was good for hockey. It was good to have such a great player back, and have him prove that he still belongs.
Well, I know one stat comparing Mario and Gretzky that isn't in any history books - and it's one that Wayne will lose every single time. I don't know a single woman or gay guy or bi guy who looks at Gretzky and thinks to themselves - I'd like a piece of that. Whereas I know plenty who would love to enjoy a heaping helping of Mario. And the only thing they'd love even more - is to find themselves in the middle of a Mario / Jaromir Manwich. They'd be peeling the lucky man or woman off the ceiling.
Fun fact: Mark Messier (2nd highest point total of all time) only has 164 more points than Mario, despite playing in 841 more games.
Mario is the only member of the top 35 point totals in NHL history to play in less than 1000 games, and he ranks 7th all time. Every player in front of him played a minimum of 433 more games.
I was so happy when I heard the news of a comeback by Mario. I knew that, by coming back and playing a descent amount of games, he was going to give back the record for avg pts/games to Gretzky (which he truly deserved). And Mario did not disappoint...
@Irato99 When Mario was 100% healthy, he was averaging more points a game than Gretzky. Nevermind giving 100%, Mario always gave 1000%. He would be in so much pain he couldn't tie his own skates, then go out and score a hat trick in the best league in the world. I didn't mean he gave 25% effort, i meant his body let him down, and when he was playing at 25% of his full abilities due to pain, he was still better than everyone else on the ice.
First, Gretzky at 100% and at his prime average more pts a game than Mario at 100% and at his prime (Gretzky had a streak of 51 games with 153 pts at one time, Mario never did that).
Second, Mario didn't always give 100%, he even admitted it. It's when he went to Canada Cup in 87 that he realized he had to work harder (seeing Gretzky practice).
@Irato99 Mario had a great supporting cast for 2 years, compared to a decade for Gretzky. In the 5 years before the final retirement he had highest ppg average of anyone. Before Mario retired he posted a 2.05 PPG average while Gretzky's was 1.92 with MUCH less talent around him. Why is that so easy for you ignore, I like Gretzky but why are you such a gretzky fanboy that it is so easy for you cast aside Mario's accomplishments? Gretzky got 600 goals in 719 gms, 718 for mario. omg what a diff
Mario had a great team during all the 90s with many Hall of Famers, not only 2 years. And don't talk about Mario's stats before 1st retirement, they are irrelevant because he came back. Gretzky won the Hart with an expansion team with nobody to help him.
@Irato99 Despite playing in 572 fewer games than Wayne, Mario holds the record for the highest career points-per-game average (2.005) and the highest career goals-per-game average (.823). While the title of "greatest" player is debatable, the title of "most productive" player is not. It wasn't until the arrival of Mark Recchi to Pittsburgh in the early 90's that Lemieux had another all-star caliber player to play with. Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr mean anything to you?
Gretzky holds the record for avg ppg with 1.92, Mario has 1.88, and Bossy holds the record for avg gpg with 0.76, Mario has 0.75, I don't know why you don't check you info before posting.
And you forget that Coffey was traded from Edmonton in 87, he went to play to... Pittsburgh.
@Irato99 You make a big deal between a 0.75 and 0.76 gpg between bossy and mario? Good grief, that is a MASSIVE difference wouldn't you agree? At least you are not nitpicking. Adjust both players stats to the 2008-09 goals-per-game average of 5.82, and Gretzky would have a 1.56 career points-per-game mark, while Lemieux would check in at 1.61. take Gretzkys 215-point pace and put it in the context of 1995-96, and he would have had 148 points over the same 70 games it took Lemieux to record 161.
@Irato99 In 92-93, Lemieux fought through cancer and had 69 goals and 160 points in 60 games. 2.67 points-per-game clip rivaled Gretzkys 2.69 from 1985-86, except the league averaged only 7.25 goals per game in 92-93, down 8.7 percent from Gretzkys record-setting season. adjust Lemieuxs numbers to 1985-86 terms, and he would have accumulated 232 points over 80 games. This is math, not imagination. And if you point to the difference of 0.75 vs. 0.76, it is safe to say you make a big deal
@Irato99 In 88-89, Mario had 85 goals and 199 points. That year, the league averaged 7.48 goals per game, off 5.8 percent from 85-86. Adjust Lemieuxs numbers accordingly, and he would have put up 222 points over 80 games. 95-96, scoring was down across the league, falling to 6.29 goals per game. Mario still managed 69 goals and 161 points in 70 contests. In 1985-86 numbers, Lemieuxs total would have been worth 232 points over 80 games. Wayne had it easy in 85, league was higher scoring
@Irato99 The five highest-scoring seasons in the NHL were 81-86. Gretzky had 375 goals and 1,036 points in 394 games, for 2.63 ppg. The league averaged a 7.87 gpg during that five-year stretch. In 07-08, the average was 5.57 gpg. In 85-86, with the league registering 7.94 gpg, Gretzky had his 215 points. 88-89, Mario had 85 goals and 199 points. That year, average was 7.48 goals per game, off 5.8 percent from 85-86. Adjust Mario's numbers, he would have put up 222 points over 80 games.math much?
@Irato99 This is by no means your first rodeo is it? Why is it that on every Lemieux video on here, you are having some flame war with someone, trying to force them to believe what you do about who is better? Is that your thing? Watching Lemieux highlight and tribute videos and starting shit on the internet? You, my friend, make me lol. Hard. Continue the flaming on every video you can find, let me know how that works out for you
The thing is that on a lot of Mario videos, some people come up with silly comments or completely wrong statistics, they try so hard to prove Mario is better that they deform reality and it makes me mad sometimes. I just try to reestablish the truth and correct stats, I won't ridicule someone who hasn't already done it to himself.
@Irato99 riveting tale, old bean. You are doing God's work. Keep searching lemieux vids in search of those you can force into believing what you do. You are like a Jehovah's witness of the internet, with mario vids as your neighborhood and your keyboard is your holy book. Keep up the good fight, lord knows you are making a big, big difference in the grand scheme of things.
@Irato99 lulz you didnt make me see shit my good man. You had a hard time refuting the stats I brought up most recently, but Lemieux vs. Gretzky like most things sports related is a matter of opinion. Some have more memories with Gretzky, some with Lemieux. I am not the arguing on youtube type, i find it much like the special olympics. Even if you win, you are still retarded. But in your case, I will say Godspeed.
Well, just the fact that you didn't use Gretzky most productive year to make your comparisons says it all.
And why not make other comparisons, like the rookie years. Gretzky had 137 pts when the league averaged 7.03 gpg, while Mario had 100 pts when the league averaged 7.77 gpg. This would mean that Mario couldn't even get 100 pts if he debuted at the same time as Gretzky.
You see, you can make numbers says anything if you tweak them the way you want, but I prefer facts...
@Irato99 Let's not forget that while a sprained knee would be enough for Lemieux to sit out games, Gretzky missed two months of a season, came back with a cancer riddled body, and was the most productive player in the best hockey league in the world. Not to mention Gretzky missed 50 games with a herniated disk and staph infection, only to return and post the second highest point total in playoff history when he was in so much pain, he could not bend down to tie his own skate. Lets demean him.
@Irato99 Now you really make me laugh, you come back with a vengeance and you don't know what irony is. Go read your last post, think about it a little, and be ashamed.
@Irato99 Still not getting it? Like you said, the only thing wrong with it are the names. But wait! What if we just switch the names.........most perplexing....
@BarryMcCawkiner you idiot you said gretzky did those thing when in fact it was lemieux who came back from cancer anc ould not tie his show laces...in my opinion gretzky played with better players like kurri and messier and coffey for more years etc but lemiuezx was still the better player when he played ...even bobby orr was better than gretzky...bt i love gretzky the great one...they are all canadians and we should be proud
@giaforever12 Your post makes me a little sad for humanity. All you have to do is read my posts in which I was arguing with someone who claimed Gretzky was better than Lemieux to know that I think Lemieux is better than Gretzky. Do you know what Irony is? It's not my job to educate you, but you obviously don't. Look it up, or ask a teacher or something. In short, calling someone an idiot for saying something that they were saying ironically makes you the idiot, my friend. Hope this clears it up
In your case, you wrote "Had Lemieux played the amount of games Gretzky did, all the great one's records would be shattered", you realize how silly this is, I had to correct you.
I hate to point this out but when I heard the commentator say that they had sold out the buolding when Lemieux came back, and add to the fact that Pittsburgh started to sell out all of there home games when they Drafted Sidney Crosby etc... I think that in 15 years when Crosby is in the twilight of his career with a few years left in him, whats Pittsburgh to do? they're not always goingto get a generational talent every 20 years, could they handle just having a star player like Spezza or Iginla?
i remember watching Mario play against the Canucks, see him do something so dominant and totally unique that most plyaers just weren't born with the ability to do, i'd find my self just watching the tv, shaking my head, literally thinking " what do you do? " lol thinking about how to stop him haha.. no chance.
Lemieux and Jagr had some great chemistry. They were just amazing together. I remember watching them as a little kid when I was first getting into hockey. They just always knew what the other one was doing or thinking.
there was a vid on NHL network were it showed his first game back,but it showed everything like him going to the rink,and him in the locker room and everything and it was a relly good vid,but i cant find it anywere. anyway I never really noticed how good that pens team was until i saw that vid, holy shit they had Jagr,lemieux,kovalev,kasparitis,and straka. jesus they should have made it to the finals atleast.
I remember watching this game,growing up in Toronto.The Pens were my team and Mario was and still is my favorite player.I will never forget this game.The first time I saw Mario play.Almost 10 years later the Pens are still my team,and if I never saw that game,I dont think I would be the same fan that I am today.Thanks Mario! Truly The Best!
im from pittsburgh so im very biased.. but lemiuex did more for pittsburgh than any other one hockey player ever did for a city.. very nice guy in person too.. will always be my favorite athlete
i agree you but not at all im from montreal I can tell you Maurice Richard ( The Rocket)did a lot for montreal city and all french people ...hes the legend of hockey
I remember watching this game live. My little brother recorded it on VHS. Everything from the pre-game show, to taking down the #66 banner, to the snow coming down outside of the arena gave it a surreal feel. Think about the legend of Arthur pulling Excalibur out of the stone. I always compare it to that - reviving an unstoppable weapon. It's too bad that Mario's health lessened his potential, for he would have been close or would have exceeded Gretzky in every category imaginable.
Lemieux struggled with cancer and health problems for much of his career and played a few hundred less games. Had he not had those problems he could've come within a couple hundred points of Gretzky.
which ones? wiki gretzky records, there fucking untouchable... 100+ goals in several seasons... 18 play off goals, wins, stanley cups, pts... he is god
have u ever been to pittsurgh u fucker probably not cuz pittsburgh is a great city lets see best football team ever great hockey team and a whole bunch of other great shit so fuck u cocksucker

Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 Mario had a great supporting cast for 2 years, compared to a decade for Gretzky. In the 5 years before the final retirement he had highest ppg average of anyone. Before Mario retired he posted a 2.05 PPG average while Gretzky's was 1.92 with MUCH less talent around him. Why is that so easy for you ignore, I like Gretzky but why are you such a gretzky fanboy that it is so easy for you cast aside Mario's accomplishments? Gretzky got 600 goals in 719 gms, 718 for mario. omg what a diff
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
Again, all wrong...
Mario had a great team during all the 90s with many Hall of Famers, not only 2 years. And don't talk about Mario's stats before 1st retirement, they are irrelevant because he came back. Gretzky won the Hart with an expansion team with nobody to help him.
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 Despite playing in 572 fewer games than Wayne, Mario holds the record for the highest career points-per-game average (2.005) and the highest career goals-per-game average (.823). While the title of "greatest" player is debatable, the title of "most productive" player is not. It wasn't until the arrival of Mark Recchi to Pittsburgh in the early 90's that Lemieux had another all-star caliber player to play with. Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr mean anything to you?
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
Wow, still wrong...
Pittsburgh.
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 You make a big deal between a 0.75 and 0.76 gpg between bossy and mario? Good grief, that is a MASSIVE difference wouldn't you agree? At least you are not nitpicking. Adjust both players stats to the 2008-09 goals-per-game average of 5.82, and Gretzky would have a 1.56 career points-per-game mark, while Lemieux would check in at 1.61. take Gretzkys 215-point pace and put it in the context of 1995-96, and he would have had 148 points over the same 70 games it took Lemieux to record 161.
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
I don't make a big deal, I just give real stats, unlike your imaginary crap.
Irato99 1 year ago
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
This is not math, it's speculation. I made a big deal about wrong stats you brought about Mario.
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 In 88-89, Mario had 85 goals and 199 points. That year, the league averaged 7.48 goals per game, off 5.8 percent from 85-86. Adjust Lemieuxs numbers accordingly, and he would have put up 222 points over 80 games. 95-96, scoring was down across the league, falling to 6.29 goals per game. Mario still managed 69 goals and 161 points in 70 contests. In 1985-86 numbers, Lemieuxs total would have been worth 232 points over 80 games. Wayne had it easy in 85, league was higher scoring
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
Again, crappy speculation. And it's funny how you avoid comparing Gretzky's best ppg season, nice try...
Irato99 1 year ago
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@Irato99 This is by no means your first rodeo is it? Why is it that on every Lemieux video on here, you are having some flame war with someone, trying to force them to believe what you do about who is better? Is that your thing? Watching Lemieux highlight and tribute videos and starting shit on the internet? You, my friend, make me lol. Hard. Continue the flaming on every video you can find, let me know how that works out for you
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 riveting tale, old bean. You are doing God's work. Keep searching lemieux vids in search of those you can force into believing what you do. You are like a Jehovah's witness of the internet, with mario vids as your neighborhood and your keyboard is your holy book. Keep up the good fight, lord knows you are making a big, big difference in the grand scheme of things.

@BarryMcCawkiner
As long as there's people like you, I will keep doing my work and let them see the light.
Thank you.
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 lulz you didnt make me see shit my good man. You had a hard time refuting the stats I brought up most recently, but Lemieux vs. Gretzky like most things sports related is a matter of opinion. Some have more memories with Gretzky, some with Lemieux. I am not the arguing on youtube type, i find it much like the special olympics. Even if you win, you are still retarded. But in your case, I will say Godspeed.
BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 Let's not forget that while a sprained knee would be enough for Lemieux to sit out games, Gretzky missed two months of a season, came back with a cancer riddled body, and was the most productive player in the best hockey league in the world. Not to mention Gretzky missed 50 games with a herniated disk and staph infection, only to return and post the second highest point total in playoff history when he was in so much pain, he could not bend down to tie his own skate. Lets demean him.

So why didn't you write the names correctly? Where's the irony?

BarryMcCawkiner 1 year ago
@BarryMcCawkiner you idiot you said gretzky did those thing when in fact it was lemieux who came back from cancer anc ould not tie his show laces...in my opinion gretzky played with better players like kurri and messier and coffey for more years etc but lemiuezx was still the better player when he played ...even bobby orr was better than gretzky...bt i love gretzky the great one...they are all canadians and we should be proud
giaforever12 1 year ago
@giaforever12 Your post makes me a little sad for humanity. All you have to do is read my posts in which I was arguing with someone who claimed Gretzky was better than Lemieux to know that I think Lemieux is better than Gretzky. Do you know what Irony is? It's not my job to educate you, but you obviously don't. Look it up, or ask a teacher or something. In short, calling someone an idiot for saying something that they were saying ironically makes you the idiot, my friend. Hope this clears it up

I think he meant they were all in there seats just for the warm up. Because mario came back and that never happens when its packed for a warm up
GoPensGo377 2 years ago
They didn't have a star talent after Lemieux left. That's why they were so bad. Craig Patrick did a fire sale and everyone was gone.
