It's not entirely luck. Enemies are more likely to drop red/blue essence of you don't kill them with any sort of *T. Meaning if you don't UT or OT (a lot of people will finish every enemy off with an OT out of habit), you'll see a red or a blue. If you use a technique, you'll *always* only see a yellow.

Notice how when I isolate an enemy, I deliberately am careful to not use an obliteration. That's why.
