If you go to the Wikipedia page for this test, you can see the explosives prepared prior to detonation, and I couldn't help being reminded of videos of TNT blocks in Minecraft when I saw it.
I was on HMCS Fraser, the Canadian estroyer that took part in this test, and as usual we weren't mentioned. We were anchored about 500 yards out past Atlanta.
Anyone know anything about the white clouds that appear during the explosion? They sort of appear and disappear, then reappear. I just want to know the science behind it.
@TlalocDiosDelAgua They are called "Wilson clouds" or just condensation clouds. They are caused by the low pressure portion of a shockwave in sufficiently humid atmosphere. The shockwave will temporarily decrease the temperature causing a cloud to form and then dissipate when the pressure changes back to normal. wikipedia.blahblah/Wilson_cloud
I don't get it. Why would they need to 'simulate a nuclear weapon' when they tested hundreds in kiloton & megaton range throughout the 1950's & 1960's??? Hell, how many ships are lying at the bottom of Bikini Atoll????
@muzzmatrix Radioactive contanination perhaps? That's a bit of a bugger if you want to take measurements or photographs afterwards, as they found out after the Baker shot.
wow they got a lot of the story wrong i was on the USS ATLANTA IX 304 ,the superstructure was not made of steel it was aluminun and that is not hot steel coming down it is rocks ,on the last blast we were 300 feet from the fire ball and the ship was fine we did have a hole in the hull but it was above the water line . alot of stuff went over the side on the last blast .
Douchebags with money and extensive explosive producing facilities. Each "Sailor hat" dome contained roughly 1milllion USD worth the Explosive, meaning that every pound was about 2 bucks. You bet your sweet fucking bippy we're douchebags.
