sonnen is right. back then it was much speculated that ufc wanted to protect their then poster boy champion rich franklin from matt lindland, who was close to getting a title shot. ufc was just starting to gain popularity, and they obviously didn't want an ugly looking boring "lay and pray" fighter like matt lindland to represent the sport.

I find it hilarious that people associate Sonnen with principles that could potentially humble Silva, or the assumption for that matter he might humble anyone. If a wave of Humility broke out around Chael Sonnen, he would immediately become confused to the point of hysteria, and the long term effects would involve nausea if not a case of the hives for the douchebag. But then, a "beast wrestler" as you call them isn't going to be as stupid as Chael has been to avoid leaning submissions. @jas108 You're forgetting that Anderson has a great sprawl & wrestlers need to set their shots up with strikes. Jones' striking is unorthadox, but his sloppy striking would have him in a world of trouble with a counter striker of Silva's caliber. Chael's boxing was pretty damn impressive, which is why he was able to get Silva to the ground... he set his shots up with good boxing. I don't think Jones could set up his takedowns with his sloppy unorthadox strikes without getting countered & KO'd.

Chael did well on the feet against Anderson simply cause Anderson was thinking takedown and it left him exposed.  Sonnen does deserve another shot if he beats Bisping. The main reason is cause the fans want it, he's the only guy who made Anderson look human and the MW division isnt deep.

Matt shouldn't have ever been released and I will always resent the UFC for doing so...who cares if he isn't photogenic or charismatic. This isn't pro-wrestling. Last time I checked, more than half of the top fighters in the world don't even speak English so who cares?? They didn't like the way he fought, they couldn't sell a main or even co-main event with him so they just cut him.

Chael is a smart guy. He realizes what some naive "purists" can't seem to grasp...that Dana runs a business. A business that is fueled by image and popularity.

If a fighter isn't popular, then that's that. It doesn't matter how talented he is. Boring is boring. It sucks but that's the trade off, and at least the UFC tries to forge a proper balance between popularity and true talent.
