Scales are just a series of notes that sound good together. Most scales have either 5 notes (pentatonic scales) or 7 notes (diatonic scales - such as the major scale and its 7 modes). The first note you play when you begin a scale is the root note or key of the scale. Major scales have notes that sound happy together, minor scales have notes that sound sad together. The modes are 7 notes scales that are derived from the major scale and can join together across the fretboard in a specific order
