  • love this tune!

anyone know this concert's set list?

  • You need to watch the vids from the 40's...BR was a true innovator of match grip from the early Shaw and Dorsey years...Jungle drums man...check out Quiet Please...

  • As you say B was playing match grip way back then with A.Shaw etc. That clip of him playing 'quiet please' is off the planet stuff, quite unbelievable, his power, speed around the kit, both hands same strength, ideas, swinging relentlessly.Totally different to what we think of him do later in his career

  • Yes you guys hit that -theres one of Him around 49'-? where the Floor toms are literally shred to spinters with a""huge"sound /match to boot & This as you know is waaay before litle JOhn BONHAM...

  • no wait, i never seen buddy play matchgrip as good as traditional style and he does it like he's only played matchgrip for years.

  • WOW MATCH GRIPPED TRIPLETS !!!

  • he was 69 years old at this concert!Fuckin insane!!!!

  • Eric and Giz are amazing. Buddy Rich, wow!

  • Ive seen him use the match grip hundreds of times in concert. He used to start Channel One Suite using the match grip.

  • anyone know the lineup?

  • Trumpets: Greg Gisbert, Eric Miyashiro, Wayne Naus(sitting in) Kevin Richardson, Dana Watson Bones: Tom Garling, Rick Traeger, Jim Martin Saxes: Steve Marcus, Mike Rubino, Bob Bowlby aka "Saxmac", Jay Graig Piano: Matt Harris, Bass: Anthony Brock

  • Io c'ero!!!!!!!!

    I Was Here!!!!!!!!!!

  • interesting observation-BR doing part of his solo using match grip (4:50). Very out of character.

  • That's right, although buddy could play Tradiosnal/matchgrip.if you check him out with artie shaw you will see he is playing matchgrip on the floor toms, and that was 1939.i once seen him messing around playing with gloves on at ronnie scotts back in the late seventies.

  • Steve Marcus is great on sax but Don Menza outperforms him imho. How often did Buddy play with Menza?

  • Looking through my albums it looks like he played on the 1968 album Mercy,Mercy, & that's it.Pat LaBarbara replaced him on the 1969 album Buddy & Soul.Menza played on loads of Louie Bellson albums though.i have him fronting the WDR Big Band & will upload soon

  • He is on tour in Germany these weeks, still amazing the crowd with his extra long sax tones he also performed on the album mercy,m.,m.

  • Not too shabbby for a 69 year old man, or anybody for that matter!

  • flexibility and dextarity

  • Wow, It was is great to see that video again!

(I lost my copy years ago..) We recorded 2 nights at Ronnie's on that tour, It was supposed to be released, but it never did.( I don't think it will never see the day light) Too bad, it was a great recording. Buddy and the band was on fire!! New charts, fantastic audience, and Buddy in a good mood....... Thanks for posting.

    Eric Miyashiro

  • Hi Eric

Great to get a thread from someone who actually played with buddy.Yes the band was hot, as i was at R.Scotts for those last gigs (Fri/Sat 21/22 Nov.1986)buddy seemed to enjoy playing more at Ronnies every year.Little did we know that was his last.I still listen to those tapes of that last night at ronnies, realy great.out of interest the last set charts were 1,Winding Way,Rockin' in Rhythm,Slow Blues?,Cry me a river(Marcus & trio)Keep the Customer Satifised,West Side,Buddy talks.

  • Unabelievable that he was close to 70 years old at this time. Id ne happpppy to play like that at my age of 52.

  • wow....this is amazing...I saw Buddy Rich play in Kitchener at the Coronet Hotel.

  • FIRST TIME TO SEE RICH WAS '72 IN RONNIE SCOTTS JAZZ CLUB LONDON,(WAS GOING TO GIVE UP PLAYING AFTER SEEING HIM )SINCE THEN I'VE COUGHT HIM MOST TIMES HE APPEARED IN THE CLUB.HE ALSO APPEARED 3 TIMES IN IRELAND IN THE EIGHTIES.I BELIEVE HE WAS POSSIBLY THE BEST MUSICIAN EVER TO TAKE UP AN INSTRUMENT,UNBELIEVEABLE.WHERE IS KITHENER SITUATED rebelmachine ?

  • Hello Mikebuddy1,

Kitchener is in southern Ontario Canada west of Toronto.

  • cheers rebelmachine

  • Is Ronnie Scott's a good club and did you get in there when they were recording anything by any chance?

Also is Ronnie Scott's still an active club?

  • ronnie's is quite a nice club, great sound, great atmosphere,(don'y eat there)& when buddy appered the buzz was something else.unfortunatly not there when recording but i did record myself, bootleg y might say 7 i have the last recording of the band there in 1986.more recently i got to hear basie tribute big band (butch miles on drums) & w.herman b.band(frank tibari)the club is still open 7 doing good buissness as far as i know
