  • Those were the times when it was seen to be a sign of authority to have a moustache. Hence, most officers had one. Amazing footage and a 5-star video.

  • War is like a game of chess.

  • when you think milions of people died in that war. and today, when theres only 1 or 2 soldiers killed in a fight in afghanista, iraq or anywhere in the world, they make a whole big deal about it

  • I think ppl confuse the germans from ww1 and ww2. These guys didnt give up their lives for freedom they gave it up to weaken another power who was gaining territory, classic british tactics, ally with the weak to crush the other big powers, GJ!

  • this is a great compilation! Could I extract your video for use in a history project? You would be credited, of course :)

  • lol for freedom fought only Serbia(not so long =D ), another countries fought for additional lands

  • If only they knew what would happen later...

  • Its true the war was Germany's fault, not the black hand nor capitalists. They planned it out and even had a 1912 Conference to go over small details. Once Germany was ready they went to war in 1914 deliberately!

  • Onewaytom, I agree. The war was well planned by Germany and it was a deliberate offensive action by them. But for some reason there is still this perception that the both sides 'fell' into the war.

  • just listen to the music you can hear how old this is

  • Trenches and poision gas. Gives you shivers just thinking about it.

  • I agree onewatom. New research has shown that the war was forced by German planning. Political assasinations were a very common occurence, Franz Ferdinand wasnt actually that important, but it provided a crisis which to launch war, there were several major crisis between 1900-1914. It was however a conference in Germany between the General in 1912 where they actually planned the war. But the cheif Admiral wanted 2 more years in his own words to be ready to engage Britain.

  • most of them will die

  • Canadian Troops were known as Storm Troopers, and gained they're international freedom from Britain by taking part in this war. Espiecially defeating the germans at Vimy Ridge.

  • ww1 & ww2 started because of a massive inflation (and depresion) caused by banks People start borrowing Loans from the banks (WHICH KNOW YOU WILL NEVER PAY IT ON TIME YOU BECOME SLAVE PAYING INTERESTS) in crisis you cannot use money on the economy owing debts and most of the money goes to Incentivate Wars in South & Central america

    All Africa

All Arabia South of Russia and the baltic region Drug & arns dealing designing more ways to Kill Everybody and YOU Etc Etc Etc

  • Why ww1 started :S??

without that we had peace :s

  • this is creepy

  • Every 1 wants to the be the biggest now!

  • Loved the grammar at the end.

  • Strange to see so many peoples who are died now.

  • HISTORY CLASS - Europe was ready for a war because a war had not taken place for a long time and after sides were picked (triple entente) and (triple alliance) all they needed was an excuse to go to war and Gavrillo Princip gave them that excuse when he assassinated Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Ausrol-Hungarian Empire was angry with Serbia and because Russia were allies with Serbia when Austrol Hungary declared war Serbia Russia stepped in and that meant so did Britain and France

  • R.I.P. To all those brtittish,american,french,german,austro-hungarian,serbian and portuguese etc soldiers who died in those disgusting trenches!

  • Hitler was actually churchills 2nd cousin.

  • i know this is a very dumb question but wat was WW1 all about

  • MAIN causes

    -military

    -alliances

    -imperialism

    -nationalism

  • America saved the Allies. If it wasn't for us, Germany would of conquered France.

  • yeah the us did save the ollies also the german plan didnt go complety as planned either cuz the original commander with the plan to actually win the war died and so a new commander took his place and screwed stuff up!

  • I blame France... they pressured Russia into backing Serbia for their own grudge against Germany. Had Russia not backed Serbia, it would have stayed a local conflict between Ausrtia-Hungary and Serbia....

  • This war was never needed. It could have been settled by talking with one another, but then again, can't all wars be solved that way? It is hard to believe that practically the entire world was involved in something that could have been settled between Austria-Hungary and the other country..I forget which. We lost so many lives that didn't have to be lost and then world war two came which could have been avoided by nto having world war one. It is so sad and yet so intriguing. Isn't it? Ha Ha.

  • It's not "Francis" it's just Franz.

  • to onewaytom: it was called the scleifen plan I think. not sure about the spelling but yes you are correct

  • US already knew if the allies in Europe will fall they will be the next to fall...

  • although your not wrong, the plan was created incase of attack and war. they were not planning on starting a war or anything. it was just a precaution.

  • Only 5 years now until the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I

  • wwI started because of a complicated systems of alliances and an arms race between germanyy and england. The assination of archduke ferdinand was a trigger stone and because of the british empire most of the world was at war. it was also a world war because it had conflicts in Russia, Gallipoli, Africa and parts of the Pacific

  • i'd go to war just to get away from that singer..........had to laugh about 25 seconds in - Reaction to News Of The War - it was like monty python 'run away, run away'

  • Christmas truths were normal in christians wars in history but this time the casualties meant alot more!

  • i remember those days...

  • gb and france are at fault for adolf hitler and ww2, if they hadn't been so harsh on the treaty germany wouldn't have been so bitter.

  • A lot of factors contributed to the war; Ferdinand's death was only the catalyst.

  • Read GUNS OF AUGUST, by Barbara Tuchman. An amazing book detailing how the First World War started.

  • Germany didn't want war anymore than any other party. They had the "Schlieffen Plan," in existence for decades, as a contingency, whereby they'd invade France through the Belgian flank. This, as with all wars, was the result of the banking/industrial consortium that benefits from all violent misery. "King;" "country;" "freedom;" these were all unctuous platitudes to sell this barbarity to the masses, who, although they provide the cannon fodder, always can be counted upon to eat it up.

  • What is the name of that we love you all the more song?

  • Poor souls, many would be mowed down by machine guns...

  • Too much Nationalism/Militarism/Total War. Nations want to be the best in World War 1.

And then when they get to the trenches, it was a mess. I need to check what is a Trenches foot is. The rush to France while defending against Russia is a Schiffen plan (I think).

USA arrive on time against the German second rush after Russia withdrawn.

  • The main cause of the war was NOT the assasination of Ferdinand, but rather the build up of tension in the Balkans and the build up of tension between Germany and Britain through arms races trade competition ect.

  • the war was already planed by germany b4 he died they had a plan where the would try to sweep france quickly and go to the russian boarder to avoid a 2 front war.

  • to onewaytom: thats true but that doesnt mean it was Germany's fault. Everyone in Europe had a plan to invade everyone else in Europe

  • Yeah this guy's right. Germany didn't want a huge skirmish with all of europe and america. They just wanted to get france out of the way, but because of the Alliances, it brought seven countries into it.

  • "the war was already planed by germany b4 he died they had a plan where the would try to sweep france quickly and go to the russian boarder to avoid a 2 front war. "

wat do u mean before gremany died?

    that's confusing

  • i think that you are thinking of the schlieffen plan and germany didnt have plans for war before the assassination

  • US saved the Allies

  • hardly, plus u.s took their time to help the allies.

  • the us also think they saved the allies in WWII but really the USSR won the war

  • "Save" isn't the word I would have chosen. They did, however, bring fresh supplies and boosted morale with their number of reinforcing troops.

  • UK saved the Allies

  • UK saved the Allies

  • the usual comments i see on war footage.

    fail

  • no. US didn't go into the war until 1918. Canada played a much bigger part in the war. If anything Canada saved Allies.

  • True True True

  • this aint world war 2!

  • i ww1 us is joined in germany austria....

  • No they didn't

  • its true without us the allies would lost.

  • so did Greece.

  • the allies are the us?? o.o and canada won vimy ridge :D

  • what? that's the dumbest thing i've heard...we didn't need you to come in. hell, you were only there less then a year so it didnt do much

  • ww1 they didnt they didnt want to get involved. ww2 they only got involved coz japan bombed pearl harbour.

  • They could have ended the war and saved millions of lives if they had joined earliar though

  • hahaha

    u r funny

  • Ive been round the battlefields there still war marked see Verdun if you can.

  • This footage isn't rare, I'm afraid to say. It's stock.. I just used it in a presentation- wonderful arrangment nonetheless

  • blame the Black Hand.

  • i agree with you

but the funny thing is the duke guy didnt die from a planned attack...it was just random

the driver of the dukes car went the wrong way...where unfortuanetly a member of the black hand was waitin

  • the man cause of war was the exceution of ferdinand sarajevo lol

  • Otherwise known as 'nationalism'...which along with 'militarism', 'imperialism', and the alliance system were the main causes of WW1.

  • he was assasinated not executed

  • don't u mean Frans Ferdinand?

  • francis

  • This war was a collaboration of the ruling class in order to stem the tide of the workers movement. It was very successful All of Europe, except for France, was run by the same royal family. Rather than fight the bosses the working class of Europe killed each other.

  • I'm reading "Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War" by Patrick Buchanan (2008: Crown Publishers, NY) It will totally change your perspective of how WWI started.

  • the only reason why it started is because of the germans they was so jelouse about the british empire couse it was the biggest in the world and theres is like the smallest so they wanted power to do that he just tryed to take over eny country in its way but failed hahaha!!!!

  • Everybody wanted to be The Biggest back then.

  • they still do there just scared of being nuked

  • yeah, as if not now...

  • you couldnt be more incorrect dude

  • That's a rather simplistic view, Dogapsa. Yes, it was perhaps inexcusable, but this war was not fought out of BOREDOM. Who told you that? Better yet, where did you read that? Couldn't have been a very thorough source. It's a bit more complicated than that, sir.

  • A superb presentation. I did not think one could learn so much about the war in four minutes.

  • This arguement is horrible, the only person to blame is Gavrilo Principhe he is responsible for sparking the chain of events that led to both World Wars, the Cold War and many of the troubles in the Middle East that still exist to this day.

  • No gods, no masters, no wars!

    Long live anarchy!

  • Yeah, the Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for the entire war when it really didn't. It allowed Germany to have no more than 100,000 troops in its military and conscription was abolished. It also said that tanks, military aircraft, and artillery pieces were banned. Germany also was forced to release all of its colonies. They also demanded like 220 billion Reichsmarks in reparations. These problems as well as others paved the way for Hitler's rise to power and the next world war.

  • hey can you tell me how you made this video, i was thinking of doing something liek this

  • GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!

  • I read a great quote form a Canadian soldier who survivrd and was in London, some women went up to him and said with all pride what did you do over their son, he turnd rouna and said, I died maam, even the survivors felt dead.

  • now man thats just beutiful

  • The history of the thwentieth century is full of disasters like this. I think that it was the burial of hopes.

  • This is some usefull stuff. chears

  • well for most of the world it was....for the US...and some of the greater countries like Britain and france....maybe Germany and Russia, I doubt it. But small countries that were involved in this war, countries like Romania Poland Nicaragua Lithuania....have never seen big machine guns...or know how to defend against gas that blinds you...some countries still rode into battle wielding swords on horse back like in revolutionary times...there enemies wielding Howitzers and Machine guns....R.I.P:(

  • The history of the twentieth century is pure sadness.

  • canada has an army?!?

well now the final question is, does greec have an army?? and does morroco??

  • when i know that the germans and british play soccer together in Christmas truce i felt like wow..amazing. And what im thinking is just playing football and end the war for good

  • Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, was killed at Sarajevo. Austria sent an ultimatum to Serbia, which was rejected. Serbia called on its ally, Russia, for assistance. Russia began to mobilize. Austria requested assistance from Germany. Germany began to mobilize. Whenever Germany mobilized, France declared war on Germany. Germany invades France, passing through Belgium. On account of an 1839 treaty, England declares war on Germany. The whole continent is at war.

  • The ultimatum was not completely rejected, but that doesn't really matter. What you say is true. That's the way it happened

  • im thankful of the way i live today,i mean it is to hard to imagine what its like living through these times

  • were can i get such interesting footage in higher video quality ?

  • My Great Great Grandpa is one of the Austro-Hungarian Naval Officers walking as a pallbearer along side the carriage for the funeral procession of Francis Ferdinand. He is the second in line.

  • im not sure if its true, but i heard there was one day in the war were fighting all stopped i thin christmas, please tell me if this is true or i have been lied to

  • I've never seen this stuff before. Hey Killtron, where did you find Franz Ferdinand's funeral ceremony?

  • the only reason this disastrous war called 'world war one' is because 'winners' put too much on Germany's shoulders... of course the great depression would have been a factor too but it the treaty of versailes went right there was a chance a psycho called Adolf Hitler wouldn't success or that is my P.O.V...

  • i agree dude. the pressure one Germany added to the effects of the treaty, led to a massive depresion, which of course led to Hitlers rise.

  • If anyones interested in ww1 theres a website called WOMDA(Wilfred Owen Media Digitial Archive) that has contemporary footage(-mostly Somme era), tons of photos etc all freely downloadable.

  • That could be a factor...but we [The U.S.] never signed the Treaty of Versailles.

  • Ah, the dark glass of hindsight

  • whats pov?

  • what was strange about this war was the fact that the soldiers didn't actually hate eachother, when the war first began the German and French troops would often have lunch togethor, they would walk freely and mingle with eachother, on christmas the German and British troops sang silent knight togethor

  • what! no the french hated the germans because they lost the franco-prussin war

  • Which one of you is right?

  • they also played soccer together or football which is the real name lol but yea your right they didnt hate each other which i think is awesome

  • Trust me, kill enough of one another and see your friend bleed out... They probably learned to hate pretty quick.

  • thats because it was an artificial war created by the bankers and royalty of eu

  • and in that time before they strike a ship they warned it first so that the occupants could evacuate it.

  • The leaders/Generals w.e lol they ordered that anyone seen like being nice to the oppositions are shot officers from the back game foward to kill anyone who wanted to 'mingle'. So sad.

  • Lol imagine trying to kill your best friend. But WW2 is a whole different story, since Hitler and his Tojo friend brainwash their soldiers I guess theirs a reason to kill each other tho'

  • Actually the French hated the Germans, this was because Germany took Allsace-Lorraine from France.

    Your Welcome!

  • what your reffering to is the christmas truce.

it lasted for almost 2 weeks on some parts of the western front, but in others only a day.

german and british soldiers exchanged souveniers, what little food and drink they had , ciggerettes and photos of loved ones with each other.

it was a beacon for humanity and pacifism.

just goes to show none of those men wanted to fight, it was just the poloticians and generals hundreds of miles behind the line.

  • yea, and theirs that cool pic of the German and British soldier sharing a ciq lol

  • true, read a story about the them swapping ciggarette lighters after the british played the germans at football.......bloody sad and heartbreaking to know they didnt feel hatred. sums up how evil and selfish leaders can be to betray their own countrymen. possibly my biggest hero is harry patch.

  • just because Generals and civilians hate each other doesn't mean that the ground pounders do. They knew how bad people were dyin on both sides. When you go through that much hell, you just want to survive.

  • Er, I think you may have a slightly tilted view there, in the opening battles of the war almost 500,000 frenchmen were killed, I dont think they were sharing croissants and coffee with the Germans after that. Also the Christmas day armistice happened in 1914 only the high command of both sides stopped any such fratenising soon after.

  • they called it the last war of chivalry

  • Which one of you is right?

  • I would think the French would be pissed at Germany still from taking Alsace-Lorraine

  • This war was terrible, all those men who were mowed down on the battlefield

  • young boys fightin old mens wars. Makes me appreciate the freedoms i have today

  • germany were always gonna loose world war 1

they were vertially against the whole world

with only a few small european countres on their side

  • both Ottoman empire and Austria-Hungary were large contributors for the Central powers. Germany never fought The Great War on their soil. Once the United States entered the war, the second Reich began to falter.

  • Ottoman Empire was a shell of their former self, probably more hinderance than help to Germany

  • Germany only gave in @ the end of WWI because their country was in mass starvation. WWI only set up WWII. The war was basically never over for the Germans. And it was Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, & the Ottoman Empire vs. France, Russia (until they withdrew), Great Britain, and the U.S.

  • if not for the TREATY OF VERSAILLES this will only be known as the "GREAT WAR" not "world war I" -.-, the blame shouldve been divided upon the central powers

  • hey dummy, i think the people who gave their lives should never be forgotTEN

  • RIP

  • wtf is with the second song?? o_O it's.....a bit fucked up.

man this makes me really sad. all those kids signing up for the war...and they are barely 20 yet. i know that most of them have died young. which makes the whole video seem more depressing to watch.

but it was fascinating all the same to see a clip of history. thanks for this! ;D

  • This war wasnt about freedom....

  • Its good.

By the way, it was Archduke Franz Ferdinand's funeral not Francis Ferdinand's funeral.

  • i dont know whats up with the germans and the world wars?

  • this is much different from world war 2

  • I read recently somme bitish and american comments saying they did all the job so I will only recall a few facts about France in World War I.

    - 1,5 millions Frenchmen died during the Great War (for a population of 40 millions).

    - 27% of the young French males between 18 and 28 died during the war.

    - More than 80% of the frontline was held by the French army.

    - In 1918, during the last major offensive of the war, the French had more divisions involved than all of the other allies put together.

  • cool

  • In four years time the world changed forever.

  • well I had a good comment but damnit I put it in the wrong place so oh well lol

  • Hmm really....if it is a disadvantageous peace..it really depends on how disadvantageous it is..because to certain people it might not be so peaceful. War is sometimes a necessary evil..like they say..freedom isn't free..never has been in the past and never will be. People don't have to like it...it just is and no matter how hard you shut your eyes and think of rainbows and ponies..nothing will change that.

  • This war was a pretty stupid fight. The treaties making an alliance system were a Doomsday Machine, and once someone got upset enough to press a figurative button, the whole shebang went off: all the alliances came into play, and several peaceful nations went to war at the snap of a finger, so to speak. Maybe if a certain Austrian and a German had kept their cool, peace would've lasted a bit longer.

  • "in memory of all those who gave there live for power" ?

This war was about imperial power, not about freedom. That's why their deaths were so scandalous, and why it should be remembered.

  • i wish i had gotten to meet my great uncle george

he was out there 6 weeks before he got blown up...they never found his body :/

  • At 1:44, the footage shows German soldiers riding horses. Were those horses ceremonial or were they actually to be used in warfare?

  • Well, some rather foolish generals (Haig comes to mind) thought they would be able to use cavalry, but no, horses weren't exactly useful against machine guns and artillery.

  • ww1 was as horrible as that lady singing.

  • Why doesn't anyone run around scared when war happens anymore?

No offence to anyone, just wanted to ask a simple question.

  • Well, having to memorize a few million names for each country is a bit much, don't you think?

  • There are so manythings wrong with what most of you have said in the comments of this video

  • ow i wish i was a teenager then not now :(

every body was friends with eachother then, look at that huge croud ov people all talking to eachother. these days you will probably have a slap for bumping into someone even though they bumped into you lol.

    great old days.

  • German's told the Allies that they would sink any ship believed to carry weapons. But what did the allies do they took a chance and had the lusitania take weapons Germans gave their warning. They did what they said we didn't think they'd have the balls to do it, they did it.

  • The Lusitania carried ammunation for the British..no offence to anybody just wanted to mention it

  • So they said.

  • That's right, ammo was found last month on the wreck. Looks like England was using civilans as cover. Shame on them.

  • well, thats never actually been proved...some believe it was actually coal dust being shook lose from the torpedo hit & igniting locally; military high explosives going up would have entirely disintergated the ship...check out hms hood or hms barham....

  • There was a massive difference between supply ships and cruise liners. U boat captains were not stupid and they all kept personal tallies of what that u-boat sank. Lusitania was a well known ship. The English,French,Polish,Russians and all in between faught those bastards long before US got involved. Bad move bringing down the mighty industrial hammer that was US at the time. Either way krauts got there asses beat twice hardcore in a forty year time period.

  • But you'd have to admire their ability to continually recover.

  • the most disadvantageous peace is better than the most just war.

  • I don't think the losers would agree.

  • Just ask the Germans. That joke of a treaty after WWI was such a spring board for rearment
