Instead, they tried "creating" jobs, which the government can't do anyway. If the government get bigger and selfish, it starts poking its nose in places where it shouldn't. And of course, if people rely on the government too much or aren't willing to cooperate, then problems happen there too. But that's part of freedom, which includes the freedom to fail. Hence the GD

real estate agents enabled bad house sales
middle class people bought houses that they could not afford
in an economic disaster (like the last one great depression) common people make the mistakes (we got out of the first one by WWII)
