    Cheers, really enjoyed this.

  • thanks very much

  • Interesting. Many blues songs have a topical quality, but this piece is so specific and local. It is not generic song telling like "Duncan and Brady" or "Staggerlee (stack-o-lee, stackerlee, etc.) which name names but feel like fictional narratives. This is "my boss, Roy Flowers, is a skinflint and a scoundrel. It doesn't really try for any clever turns of phrase, either; it is just a flat out, unadorned diatribe, but it really brings home the misery, frustration, and angst. Very nice piece.

    Tim

  • thanks Tim~this guy tells it like it is and i hope Roy Flowers never heard this or Robert would have been in BIG trouble......

  • Nice upload Steve! Thanks for posting!

  • yea ! thanks for uploading this this is some down-home blues ! , good stuff :).

    Cheers,

    Jesse.

  • thanks very much Jesse.

  • It seems this is a highly personal song giving the listener a look into his life. Understated but perfectly performed guitar and a great voice. This really is a 5* tune! Great to hear the record pops too.

It seems funny when you pay $100 or so for an old blues record (most us collectors have) knowing the artists or descendants aren't seeing any of it. That's why I feel it's important that mediums YT give us the opportunity to share these finds to reflect on and remember them. Stay away WMG!!

  • thanks Stew and i totally agree with you.

  • Watched Lightnin' Hopkins to see similarity.(I'll take your word for it,Steve) Thanks for great blues & blues lesson.

    Regards, Greg.

  • thanks Greg~I can hear a similarity....honest ...lol

  • I wonder if youtube is todays' cottonfields.Wonderful players playing for happy listeners.Great stuff Steve

  • thanks Paul and its back to the cottonfields now lol

  • btw, it's awesome that true music (far from these "commercial aberrations") can survive and give us emotions with its simplicity and genuiness.

    Thank you for this upload

    *****

  • thanks~sometimes bluesmen were" paid" with a bottle of coke for recording and as you say we pay 20 euros for these recordings. I was sent this album by the guy from the delta blues link and he paid $100 for it !!!!

  • "Robert Curtis Smith was a poor Farm Labourer from Claksdale supporting his wife and eight children on $3 per day maximum."

This thing makes me think about big recording companies, about paying 20 euros a cd, about the fact that youtube often forces me to remove videos because of violations of copyright and other bullshit like that...

  • i am lucky in that i have only lost one vid to WMG so far and that was Geechie Wiley but we shouldn't lose any.

They are mistaken if they think 1 view =1 lost sale as that is not the case and this music would probably not even be heard by anyone if not posted on youtube !!!!!!

  • damn straight!

  • NOT just because I am great Lighting Hopkins fan I like this narrative kind of blues performing very much. And I didn't know Robert Curtis Smith before. Thanks for to show me!

    Lena

  • thanks Lena :-)

  • Good one steve excellent song and the pictures are great show you just what life these guys had

  • amazing to think that great music can emerge from the harshest conditions that would crush most people.

Roberts employer was going to shoot him for playing guitar !!!!!!!!
