They don't use sugar or salt because the grains are too small to see. If you used a larger salt, like rock salt, it would be tapping on the dome (creating a rather annoying noise).

@KimmyRyae Maybe but once a girl hits puberty a lot can happen. She could get fat, break out in zits, hair in unwanted places... just all sorts of things. Everyone thought I was going to be pretty when I grew up... I've improved a lot since then but when I was a young teen... I was hideous.
