It's not really that difficult an argument, when discussing freedom of the press.
This freedom entails being responsible, to an extent, for the insurance of liberty for the general public. It is supposed to serve the general populace and not the messengers.
When this system fails, we are all guilty.
But, that doesn't mean that the opportunistic cowards, who abuse their responsibility should get away with it!

It is to my great & lasting shame that I hacked phones while working as a local journalist during the early 2000s.
I stopped after a horrible incident while ‘investigating’ a town’s prostitution ring. We’d hacked a major pimp’s phone, only for me to hear that my 17YO stepdaughter was a big favourite for his clients “because she takes it by any entrance you fancy- all 3 at once if there’s a crowd of you!”
My relationship with the girl’s mother soon ended & I’ve been in counselling ever since.
