Before they did this preformence, they traveled around with big machines to make sure that the ice wouldn't brake. Unfortunately the ice did brake, but they did every thing they could to help the horses up. They are, as you see, holding the horses heads up so they could breath and then jumped inte the lake and put the hoses hoof on their legs to help the horses to get up. No horse where hurt in the accident, but they where a bit could.
The "method" that worked was Siggi jumped into the frigid water and put the horses front hooves onto his legs to give the horses enough of a boost and leverage to get out of the water -- that you will notice was up to their noses.
Tolting on the ice is a common wintertime activity in Iceland. Of all of these horses, the important thing to remember is that only 1 had a neck injury that needed recovery time.
I was glued to this video. I hope all their outcomes were good and no permanent damage happened. Does anyone know what happened? Please tell , if you know. Please stick to hockey rinks from now on too.
I don't understand why more of the people didn't start helping when they saw the method used that was working. Seems most of them just kept pulling on the reins w/no avail. Hats off to the man & a few others, I think, who were so willing to brave the icy waters. I cried when it got to be such a long time for many of the horses & some of them were about giving up. Would like to know if they all lived after that or was it too debilitating for some especially those left in longer.
The ice was strong enough to carry horses, aslo 11 and up, but not when tjey were ridden so closely. Because if you look at the horses when they are rescued, the ice does not break, it is stong enough to carry the horse, even after it has been broken and is more weak.
I Like tølt on ice, i think it is cool, but of course not when things like this happens :(
it's quite common for Icelandic horses to be ridden on the ice. it's a way of exhibiting their gait. now it's usually done on a hockey rink rather than a frozen lake. from what i saw on Animal Planet when they covered this story, they had been out the previous day with no problems but the ice had melted somewhat the day this happened. accidents happen in ALL equestrian events.
Ok, do you seriously think they went out on the ice and thougth it would break??
If you think it is so immensely stupid to ride on the ice, then you must think that people who goes iceskating or walking on frosen lakes are also stupid...

@JuliaStuxberg No horse where hurt. They pull the horses rains so the horse can breath. If they would stop pull the horse would probably drown.
