  • I just watched this live today....

  • i love oldham youth orchestra.

it's brilliant how they do all this film music instead of classical.

i wish my (adult) orchestra would be that open-minded.

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT AS A MUSICIAN AND A LORD OF THE RINGS FAN!!!!!

  • sweet ;)

  • 0:26 fail !

  • my youthe orchestra is like half this size :(

  • nice

  • This is so epic, Iove smashing orcs to this.

  • my 8th grade orchestra is doing this.

  • Wonderful. Quite a bit of talent.

  • This is amazing very very good

  • Are they really high school kids?? wow they sure beat the crap out my schools orchestra.

  • I wonder if they come in pint sizes?

  • wow this is almost perfect. you wouldnt know it was from highschool kids.

  • Everyone believes Tolkien would be proud if he could see this. Most writers hates their books depicted in a film because it is not the way they imagined it or, it skips neccessary details through the book-film translation.

  • i`ve not money!!!!!! anybody would give me the orchestra parts gently for free?

    by the way, awesome orchestra...

  • Wow, this makes me want to play in an orchestra, it's so good!

  • Wow fantastic job.

  • This is part one of two videos.

  • If only they played the whole arrangement :O

  • that is fantastic

  • yeah good!

  • cooool, my school's played this arrangement a few years back

  • The soundtracks to the three Lord of the Rings films are all available either as single CDs or in a 3 CD box set. Try Amazon. They are excellent discs. I see that you live in Heideberg. Is it worth a visit as a tourist for a couple of days? I will be driving through Germany on my way to Vienna soon and this is one potential stop off point. I understand that it is a historic university town.

  • is there a cd where you can buy this music...??????^^I love it

  • beautiful.. masterpiece.. i wish i am listening to them live =]

  • yeah I agree with you =)

  • nice!

  • this is beautiful :) Wonderful job!! they are amazing!! LOVE IT

  • HOLY CRAP! That was awesome!!!

  • i'm extremely impressed

  • They are 12 to 18 year old school children.

  • whoah ?

...these are middle schoolers ? or at least early high-school?

    very, very impressive.

I mean, the trumpet section is phenomenon for a bunch of kids! In reality, the notes they are sustaining, but not just sustaining but are belting out with beautiful tone is not something a middle school usually can do (trumpet player).

Everyone in here is amazing, this is one group of talented kids!

  • beautiful!

  • haha he missed it at 0:25 xD fail

  • lol

  • @Inflame6 that's not very nice.

  • this song is frekishly awesome

it's only really cool when you get to play it

my middle school 7th + 8th grade orchestra have this fantastic oppurtunity

    It sounds really cool live

  • Our Phil Youth Orchestra just got this song, so sick haha

  • i know the song is called howard shore but it sounds different than this on the version i listened to. which is the one that plays most often throughout the lord of the ring series.

  • too bad our youth orchestra does nothing like this

i would love our conductor forever if he chose to do this

  • the first few rows are the audiece are empty; is this a dress rehersial or something?

  • There kids doing a hard song! But doing a GREAT job!

  • of course 5*'s!!

  • this is amazing!!, its a shame it was recorded with a cell phone...

  • Doubt it was with a cell phone. It's probably the quality decreasing done by YouTube.

  • It's not a cell phone. It's a camcorder. Unfortunately the quality drops when converting from tape to DVD, then to a compressed XVID file and then finally uploading onto YouTube. Quality drops away quite a lot, unfortunately.

  • Oldham is a small industrial town in the northwest of England close to Manchester.

  • oldham...like oldham county in ky?? or is it a different oldham?

  • It's okay... but the seating arrangement is rather... awkward.

And the camerawork doesn't exactly zoom in to particularly interesting areas. :)

  • WELL DONE!!!!!!!!

  • there pretty good

  • wooooooooow

     5 stars

  • amazing!

  • its good, but at parts like at the concerning hobbits part it feels unbalanced with to little strings

  • these guys sound great, but i'm not a fan of the arrangement, too much unnecessary percussion

  • In what way is it atrocious, exactly?

  • I hate the sitting arrangement of the brass and woodwinds.

    Attrocious

  • i love the movies music

  • uuu I just played it today with somekinda Chicagos private school. XD

  • Such a Beautiful T__T

  • I didn't know that, cheers for that.

  • saxophones in a orchestra?

  • Yes. Of course. Listen to Prokofiev, Shostakovitch, Tippett.......

  • yah, sometimes they'll put in a trumpet or a few flutes into orchestras. saxaphones are relatively rare though because they were the most "recently" created instrument, so a lot of the older music doesn't have parts for saxaphones. u only will ever really see them in new charts

  • nice i love fanfare for common man. i want to see you guys in NY. im a double-bass player myself.

  • The tour leader is in New York this week to look at the venues. When I get all the dates I will get back to you.

  • i think it's pretty good since it is a middle school band, and the professionals dont play it all that much better. what other songs will you be playing when you go to new york?

  • Hope to be doing Candide overture, Americana by Niehaus, Fanfare for the Common Man, Banks of Green Willow, Henry V and Crown Imperial by Walton, Pomp and Circumstance plus other stuff.

  • not bad, but the percussion is far too loud (I say this as a percussionist myself).

And the strange thing he plays at 0:23, what should that be? An anvil?

Actually the balance isn't very good in the whole orchestra, often the main part is too silent.

I also think you are to many winds compared with the strings.

But all in all not bad

  • The "anvil" is a brake lining. As is often the case with school orchestras, the strings tend to get swamped a bit, I agree. Bear in mind that the balance isn't really captured very well on a camcorder set up to the right of the orchestra on the balcony - not ideal. Thanks for your comments.

  • you are really good,...feel like listebning to the film ;-)

  • jusk like watching movies! nice

  • what a nice band and arrangement. everything was flawless. 5/5

  • Oh, wicked! Middle School playing Lord of the Rings. XD!

  • What state is this?

  • It's in London's Royal Festival Hall. The orchestra is from Oldham near Manchester.

  • state? .-. stupid american

  • Pardon the HELL out of me.

  • Oh dear. Your question was perfectly reasonable and I hope that I answered it for you. It's a British youth orchestra, not an American one. We are coming over to play in New York in July. Maybe the Hungarian poster should be a little bit more pleasant to people from other countries.

  • Hey hey hey be nice. Its not his fault he doesn't read descriptions.

  • haha, I noticed that it was on the description after that rude guy got smart with me... I did read it, but it apparently didn't sink in. Oh, well.

New York, eh? Sounds like a blast. ;)

  • New York is better for me, I just gotta go outa my school work and make it!

  • needs more cowbell

  • cool

  • wow! great!

  • my band gets to play this in six flags

  • what is it that middle school thing

  • I really love this!!! It's soo coool!! You can be so lucky!!!

  • Excellent work! A joy to listen to. I wish my orchestra would do Lord of the Rings.

  • It sounds awesome, there are a few out of tune Clarinets though. They stand out pretty badly at around the 2 minute marker.

Around the 4:30-4:40 marker I think it's saxophones or trumpets making a bad note that's clashing with someone else.

    OVerall I LOVED it. =]]

  • i totally agree with your comment, and for youths aswell. great.

  • I think there was an oboe or something too...

Just yell at me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure about all the parts of an orchestra :P

  • bravissimo

  • I play thee oboe too I am suo ubsessesd with Lord of the Rings

  • I love it! Thanks for uploading!!

  • !

my orchestra played this last year!

    great job!

  • Good for you, what do you want a medal!?!?

  • gr8!

    :D

  • very well done! Nice ensemble balance and such.

  • Outstanding!

  • how far away was the camera? whenever i see an orchestra video it's always off beat. stupid microphone XD

  • I was on the front row of the balcony in the Royal Festival Hall. The sound isn't out of synch / off beat on my original tape. Somewhere along the line during the processing of the clip for Youtube this synch issue happens. It also drives me crazy but most other people's clips seem to be like this as well.

  • When you do videos like this you have a choice: either go with the sound recorded by the camera, which is usually awful, or record separately with good mikes, and then try to synch the sound with the video in iMovie or some such software. Synching is quite hard, because being just two frames off (1/10 of a second) is definitely noticeable. I think this is what happened here.

  • Realy nice done. way to go! :P

  • Very good! :)

  • This is really good. I play also in youth orchestra, but we are part from a fanfare. We don't play this piece, but some others and they sound pretty good. You hit the character of this piece. One last question: Have you got saxophones? (I don't think so, but I play the saxophone and so I'm intrested)

  • We do have saxophones in other ensembles in Oldham such as the Oldham Youth wind band but not in this particular Youth Orchestra. Thanks for your kind comments.

  • Just to let you know that I'm a sax player before i say this, so i have nothing against them. Saxes aren't found in regular orchestras. Just symphonic ones, or film orchestras if they are required.

  • I love " in Dreams" i play ing on the piano all the time... its so beautiful it makes you want to cry... i am trying to find it so i can play in on my oboe

  • theyve got a book out for instruments to accompany the piano, its really good. ps im so glad there is actually someone else apart from me out there wo actually plays the oboe! woop.

  • i play oboe too x]

    + im in 2 youth orchestras :D

  • congrats.

  • really wonderful......i love this orchestra......

  • The shire theme is done SO BEAUTIFULLY...

  • lol yes thanks. slightly different from the stuff I'm writing now. cheers.

  • beautiful tuba playing! lol

    Mike

  • Michael, the tuba sounds shocking in my opinion. Have you listened to Ronnie Biggs yet? I've unloaded it for your entertainment.

  • Cool!

I've got a friend in Oldham; Holly, she does the Picking Up Sticks thing.

    Keep it up.

Requiem for a Dream next! Gotta love the Kronos 4tet.

Or may be the Rite of Spring!?

    Hehe.

    ;)
