okay... ari... so i learned this pass from u guys like a month ago. let me tell you. it works AMAZING.
BUT, i realized i never ever feed my left hand under his leg after i hook his neck, yet 90 percent of the times i escape and get mount. I dont think its that necessary and it just drains me.. whats the risk of not grabbing that leg?
Face a fast scrambler and you'll find out. It's just more control, other wise he can slip out, and you lose some of your control. it also helps with passing that half guard since his leg can't move to keep gripping.
How would you prevent the guy in the bottom from releasing the lock and bridging as you pass? you have no support if he tries to bridge towards his left shoulder specially since you are already having some momentum towards there.
If you watch Eddie call the Garcia, Popovitch match he says "Garcia just used the pass I call the capoeira pass, I dont know what he calls it but thats what I call it." He just gives things names to help his students remember them. Doesnt claim to invent the move.
just like fatguy said. Eddie gives those types of names so people remember them. its really easy to remember zombie, new york, etc. he never claims to invent them. pick up one of his books(mastering the rubber guard) he gives full credit.. just like the twister, he says that its a wrestling move, with a slight variation
hey FAVUZZABJJ, when has bravo ever claimed to have made it up? he gives credit to many, many techniques to the person who came up with it..just cuz it is being taught in the 10th planet doeant mean hes laying claim to inventing it
eddie bravo isnt CLAIMING anything it is just what they call it oh no they have a different name for it....stop hating on eddie bravo. you arent allowed to talk shit unless you have beat him or beat some people that he has beat.
He doesn't claim to have created it, he just uses a system of names for techniques he uses to make it easy to teach. He has a lot of wacky names for other stuff too.
Bollinger's version is the best..if you dont tie up that arm on the opposite side before you step over, guillotine grip or not, if he is a good wrestler with good timing, he'll bridge right outa there..just like I saw during your beta version acid test..
I tried the Capoeira pass from memory but forgot what to do after passing the leg to the opposite side and ended up sprawled on my opponent. I'm not too versed from sprawling out so I'll be paying more attention to the video this time.
this is why its not a very good idea to place your hands in their armpits when you do the whip up. I have found it to be just as effective and much safer to keep your hands locked together and just raise them as you do the whip up, this keeps your opponent from turning away.
you lose a lot of power on your whip up though if you do that. You don't have to put your hands in the arm pits, you can put them lower on the chest or lower sides of your oppenent too.
after you get out of half guard, can't the opponent get up on his knees to prevent the other guy from getting the points for side control? i'm asking because even before you escaped, the other guy was in a position where he could just scoop out his body and stand back up.
he has one of your legs locked. if he tries that, you get side control. also, you get the guillotine control immediately after you flare your free leg. never tried this move in a live roll. just commenting from what i see.
You actually do if you know how to execute a guillotine properly. As long as you have guard the same side as you are holding the guy`s neck you can finish it.
Also, in the starting position all the your opponent has to do is roll you to the side. That or take your back. You have no balance on your right.
just learned a little bit of the lockdown series yesterday - thanks for the escape! i'll have to remember that next time i get whipped up... which happens a lot since i'm much smaller than most at my dojo :(
We drilled a more basic variant of this pass from half-guard a while back. I like the addition of the guillotine to control them. Will have to try that. thanks!
awesome explanation -- thanks for warning about blowing out the knee by trying the pass to early; I thought that was a really nice and informative touch.
most guys i do this pass to end up trying to push off me and hip escape so i do end up in the twister roll but i could see your problem if guys are hold you with that body lock
I really like this pass and i'm gonna have to try it. But the dude talking about doing the twister from here freeze frame at 2:35. You aren't going to be able to twister roll with the way the bottom dude has the body lock... this is a problem i've been running into with twister roll. As soon as I grapevine a leg my opponents have been grabbing me around the body and gable gripping. it kills ANY roll. I haven't figured it out yet....
I really like how he pointed out how not to hold the foot while escaping the lock down after the turn. In the heat of the moment I woulda just held on hoping to hurt him. HAHAHA!!!!
As Brandon Quick says " don't just talk about it on you tube comments-actually try it!" This is a remarkable pass and your base is very solid ( I was super surprised when I first tried it to be honest).
I think what keeps him from going to a single leg (or double) is that he has the lock down (vs another form of half guard leg control). The lockdown locks him in place. It looks like if he lets go of the lock down as you go for this pass he can get to his knees and come up for a double.
I agree though that I like to try things before I nay-say on them.
I am actually not too surprised. Its kind of like reverse kesa gatame (I think you guys call that twister side control) just that you have your leg trapped between his legs. With the leg and head control though rolling through for the leg and turnover is extremely risky, you've got so much control over the opponents mobility, and plenty of time because of that. Nice stuff, one of my training partners is trying to master the Bravo system I'll try this out on him.
It's those little details that makes or breaks you. I noticed that there are other areas that you could take care of, as one is going from the position to escape. Rib shots punches, inside knee bend pinches & ankle locks. Thanks for teachings.
I know that for me i am an incredibly long person(6'4'') and i practice rubber guard on my own with some help from some shorter people and i know that if I were to do the whip up and the Capoeria pass was done to me, i'd be able to lock my arms round the back of hte person doing the guilitine. and with my wrestling background i'm pretty sure i'd be able to get him over onto his back. Do you find this to be true that this is harder to do against some guys? I was just curious.
Actually it looks like the person on top could take twister easier. Right at 2:35 instead of pulling your leg out you could grape vine there and maybe roll into truck. Not sure haven't tried but it seems feasible.
Great idea! Grazie!

I dont know why Eddie Bravo claims to make up the Capoeira pass when its call Reverse halfguard. A lot of bjj fighters use it like Cobrinha.

why go for side control would'nt it be easier to just lock in the guillotine while its there.

You don't have the leverage from this position. This is for control not submission.

It looks like your base is very compromised as well being as he still has control on your leg.
