Please do not purchase Blood Parrots, Flowerhorns etc. They are mutts, hybrids that simply wouldn't ever meet in their natural environment. By doing so, you are encouraging ridiculous deformities and improper aquarium husbandry guidelines. Eventually wiping out the original genetic advantage pure bred fish have over their mutated mutts.
Love the tank, homie! I have a mixed setup, myself. All aggressive. Tank should be bigger, but I'm workin' wit' what I have 4 now, dig me? I'm a Guy using my girl's if u need 2 know. Love the tank. :)
I started that way but my peacocks were just too mean and it almost felt I could not keep larger african setup ... the south american are larger and sort of dangerous but they do not go out of way to kill - am talking about the ones I have!
@Dusty696969 Hi Buddy, how much would you pay for this tank - all the fishes are now 1 year more mature/ huge and I added bunch more - siver arowana, jewel fish, nicaraguan, deep water hap, ....
My tank is similar to yours. mine is larger though. I have the same sought of fish mixture as you just alot more fish. I have Severums, Oscars, Peacocks, Mixed Malawis etc. Looks real good!
I am not one for mixing africans and south/centeral american cichlids together, but I like what you have done. The contrast between the differnt fish looks good.
agree - generally its not a good idea to mix them. BTW, in my experience, some south american are fine - in general these do not "Go after and kill" ... many african are just intolerant of others of their species ... like my peacoks just do not tolerate other peacocks ...
...wow ... love the size of the tank and good choice on decor manipulation for the species that u have in the tank. good luck with that polleni and flowerhorn in the future though :P
I have "Bleekeri" and it actually has turned out to be the most beautiful fish - jet black with bluish white large spots ... the flowerhorn had to be removed due to his "noctornal bad behaviours" ... The tank grown to even more beautiful in last over a year ... all fishes are around and grown larger!!!
@asinghut i have sand in my tank, its not really harder to cleanup, it just has its ups and downs. for example, positive things are that it looks natural, poop/uneaten food remains on top instead of falling through giving it a second chance to be eaten/sucked up by filter. negatives are no undergravel filters can be used, airline tubing cant be placed under gravel like you have here (it wouldnt stay and would blow up all the sand. i have sand in my tank if you want to see. like / sub / comment
@raj5033 I see two fishes at 1:33 - the red/ orange color one is Blood Parrot (Hybrid) cichlid while the greenish one in the background is "Geophagus Surinemesis" - a relatively peaceful cichlid - can be housed with gouramis and alll too ...
your tank is awesome. I wish to get a tank that big someday :,( I have 3 african cichlids and 1 tiger oscar. They are all pretty small right now. In a couple of months I'm going get a 55g tank. I feed the oscar crickets that I buy from petsmart. I feed the cichlids miniture pellets and frozen tubifex worms. The oscar sometimes eats the pellets and worms.
@sithoath12 I would recommend getting to pellets only for all - crickets can have disease (I lost an arowana once due to crickets ...) - and there are a LOT of great options with pellets ... I like sinking hard pellets ...
Flackes disolve and dirty the water, for larger fishes, flakes are not sufficient ... and for tanks with overflow - any floating food is a problem - they wash away into the overflow and rot ...
@uniquein2010 These fishes are tooo big for eating flakes, flakes break into pieces and disolve ... pellets are more of bit size for these fishes and do not break/ disolve ... further most cichlids sinking ... and flakes float ... there are many reasons why I do not like flakes ..
Very nice tank....Where do you buy your fish? Reside in Las Vegas and the choices are awful....They are not hearty here and quite expensive. Not many stores to choose from. We have PetSmart, Petco and three speciality stores that's it. Why don't you feed them flakes? We feed our chiclids, flakes, bloodwoms, beef and pellets every other day. The tank is a 60 gallon tank. They do not seem to be growing to us. Could e because we see them everyday. Please review my tanks under uniquein2010.
Are they online speciality stores? If so they must be okay. I have not tried doing that for fear the fish would die in a day or so and they you have to pay to ship them back plus the shipping cost is outrageous at some of the sites I looked at.
stunning setup..

Awesome tank. The colors pop out and fishes look very healthy and regal. Way to go.
What do you feed them?
samji2007 1 year ago 2
@samji2007
Thanks for the compliments bud!
I feed variety of dried pellets (never feed flakes) and occasionally shrimp.
The trick is carefully selected healthy specimen to begin with, planned aquascape and the fish type - these cichlids are so damn good!
