two brilliant masters together, not often you capture lighting in a bottle. I have just got thru watching everything Buster ever did, going to start seeking out all the stuff i can find on Chaplain now. Just love watching their timing and brilliance.
Maybe it wasThe Book of Lists... This was a Chaplin movie and while Chaplin was good, Keaton was GREAT!!! Chaplin had it edited down to balance the brilliance.
@hummingbear88 Of course that is Buster Keaton at the Piano!!!! This is a later film for both of them. They are playing old vaudeville partners reunited on stage for a performance ---in the movie "Limelight" Groucho duzint look like this at all!! Nor did he ever wear a disguise in a movie---ever----Sorry to nerd out on you like that but yur just wrong!!
Why even bother comparing these two they are both brilliant, personally I think the great Stan Laurel is worth a mention, that funny bastard has made me laugh so hard at times I thought I was gonna die, especially in High Society when he and Ollie TOTAL a guys house while he strips their car to bits, that was fuckfunny, check it out if you missed that gem. It allways come down to personal preferance.
whats the episope called where he goes to sit down on a chair n charlie takes it away n the guy (who wus going to sit in the chair) falls backwards through a hole in the floor and lands in the tub of icing in the kitchen?
Remember that Chaplin also directed, produced, wrote and played most of the scores of his films. Utterly brilliant. City Lights remains my all time favorite film.
Love Charlie I wrote an original song as a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. Hope you can visit my channel and enjoy The Little Tramp. Tory from Austin Texas..singer songwriter musician and huge Charles Spencer Chaplin fan
Two masters, two different styles, working together in perfect harmony. Chaplin's persona makes the mess, and Keaton's put-upon persona has to deal with the mess made by those around him. Beautiful.
Chaplin's miming on the violin suggests that he could play - can anyone confirm this? However, if he did, he was one of those rare people who play left-handed (the only others I've seen are Ashley McIsaac and Ornette Coleman). Was he a southpaw? What a dull and nerdy thing to point out! Ho hum. I'll get my coat....
That's what I would have thought but apparently not. Groucho Marx wasn't in the movie. And the scene is famous as the only one where Chaplin and Keaton were together on film (see Wikipedia).
the short leg thing is something very difficult to maje it look real. This is completly awesome and just a mater in comedy can do that. The simple way Buster make us laugh is just a miracle to watch.
The short leg gag seems simple at first, but honestly I have no idea how Chaplin did it so convincingly.

Peronsally Keaton makes me laugh more, and I feel is craft is a bit more unique, but I can't say one is better than the other. Both are such genious artists. Even Chaplin and Keaton always said the other was just as good as themselves. In regards to who is more famous...in pop culture I would say Charlie hands down, he's on sesame street for crying out loud, and for sure his name screams "silent films" but in the art world perhaps Buster is more likely mentioned. Love em both!
Charlie Chaplin Jr. went to school with my uncle at Black-Foxe Military Institute, in Hollywood. A lot of the stars sent their sons there, as they could be boarded while their parents were on location and such. My uncle was a day tripper and in the band on a trumpet scholarship. My mom used to dance with Charlie Jr. at school functions, when the stars would also show up. She has some old photos from those days.
I prefer Buster's humor. Deadpan, non-pandering, completely natural. And he was the better director. Chaplin influenced film more. But Keaton has proved to be the comedian's comedian. Everyone from Mel Brooks to Monty Python to the SNL crowd hold him as the best silent comedian.
well i love Buster too !! i just haven't seen as many of his movies. i think stars of that era really were all round great performers and took so much risk and were even great athletes to be able to perform all those stunts and prat falls effortlessly. i guess now a days with technology that art form is lost. so i am in awe everytime i watch silent movies with these great actors. and i think buster is more liked today 'cause of his stone face, ppl think chaplin is outdated. but i disgree.
@foxpawz Totally agree with you about technology. Stunts are kind of a dying art. Its all a matter of preference, but I hope you get a chance to see more of Buster's films because he was very ahead of his time : )
umm i prefer chaplin and i have to disagree with you. in my opinion, ur statement is reversed. for me it is, "I just like to defend Chaplin because Buster is famously preferred."
out of chaplin and keaton, i NEVER hear anyone mention the former. pl are always talking about keaton.
Thats weird. Growing up where I'm from, people always associate silent comedy with Chaplin and have no idea who Buster Keaton is. Film buffs do love to mention his name because he is more obscure. I just know that his influence on film is much smaller than Chaplin's. So I like to sing his praises. You can turn to any old sitcom or movie and see people acting like Charlie. But few comedians have saluted Buster's style of comedy
@LTopomcFly Agree Chaplin was a bigger deal than Keaton in the UK possibly because Chaplin is British. People only ever talk about The General whereas with Chaplin they talk about the Great Dictator, The Circus, Limelight and Modern Times. I guess it's like Ali, he wasn't the best boxer, but his times made him the best. Chaplin and Hitler is like Ali and Apartheid. Apparently Hitler saw Great Dictator twice. Wonder why he went back the second time?
I don't know why people think they have to choose one over the other; they both made silent comedies but had different interests and strengths. Chaplin liked to blend pathos with his comedy and was a perfectionist with regard to performances.Keaton's stunts involved more risk and he was something of a mechanical genius--see the house in One Week or the camera tricks in Sherlock Jr. Chaplin was unmatched in close up and Keaton excelled when fighting objects or the elements. Both were brilliant.
Los 2 más grandes juntos. Se cuenta que Chaplin se sentía un poco por debajo de Keaton en esta escena y recortó tomas de Keanton en la edición. No lo se con seguridad. Sin duda son los más grandes y mis 2 favoritos.
This scene is a shameful waste of Buster Keaton's talents. The pairing of the two greatest silent comedians could have been a great moment in cinema, but the opportunity was wasted on relentless schtick. What a loss!
chaplin hired keaton for the shoot. according to those who were there, they worked easily together and kept a curious eye on each other. the finished scene is good by anyone's standards, yet neither seem to be doing their strongest work. my favourite moment is keaton' swivel-chair pratfall.
Wonderful to see the 2 greatest masters of slapstick in the history of cinema in a scene together. (Though each had done much better shtick in their previous silent films -- especially Keaton.)
to cremington, sorry u got the wrong man, u mentioned a name who starred in a film Bettlejuice, thats not him, the man who was in this film wih charlie was Buster keaton, In film Bettlejuice, it was micheal Keaton
They said Buster Keaton was so good in this performance that Chaplin actually cut some shots where the so-called "Stone-face" had the upper-hand in hilarious moments. This could be justified from the fact that this scene is Calvero's great return, and not his sidekick's.
Anyway, both of them are unique and will always be missed. Actually, there's a rumor that WALL-E is actually a robotic version of Keaton with the gestures of Chaplin. Ain't that great?
two brilliant masters together, not often you capture lighting in a bottle. I have just got thru watching everything Buster ever did, going to start seeking out all the stuff i can find on Chaplain now. Just love watching their timing and brilliance.

That is certainly not Buster Keaton at the piano. It looks like Groucho Marx, but it's probably just someone posing as Groucho.
Chaplin was indeed an accomplished violinist and composed scores to several of his movies. I didn't remember that he played left-handed, though.

But we are so damned lucky to have You Tube keep much of Chaplin's stuff for us and it'll last forever!
