just like any other race, the first one to cross the line wins. But in this race you want to be in Hoy's position. You want to be the second guy so you have an advantage. This puts pressure on the first guy. As you saw, he was looking over his shoulder the whole race. When it comes down to the final lap, you attack, and by the time the first guy notices you, you'll already be going to fast for him to catch up.

2 lap race, second lap is a sprint to the finish, goal is to be in the rear to draft off the front sprinter and over take him in the last turn to save energy, or just leave your opponent in the dust while he/she tries to catch up

can anyone explain more of the strategy needed to win in this? it seems very interesting.sometimes i have almost seen them come to a complete stop, other time they seem to go very fast. Is it mostly mental?

@maven21 only the last 200 metres are actually timed, they have 3 1/2 laps to get up to build up their speed. its all tactics, they usually try to come to a complete stop to make the other lead off because then the other can 'draft' off the first racer who will be riding into the wind. the guy won because he was up on the track and even though it looked like he was behind he still had heaps of potential energy to release from that height.

do u live in the uk?? if u do then thers 3 velodromes u can do this. 1 in manchester another in newport( wales) and a smaller indoor 1 at calshot( near southampton) u should be prety good at sprinting i reckon if u bmx cus quite a few riders who sprint were ex bmx champions.
