Roller Skating practice

Both ice and roller figure skating can be graceful, but I guess roller skating is harder as you have four wheels weighing your skates down instead of a thin, light blade to jump with.

As someone who used to figure skate on ice I tried to do some of the jumps I did on ice at a roller rink once, and even though I've won some gold and silver medals as an ice skater I could not do any of the jumps at the roller rink as the skates were too heavy for me.

Im a figure skater.. i love the thought of being able to roller skate.. i just havent got anywhere local to do roller skating.

to be completly honest with you, very sport is graceful, but there graceful in differant ways

Who ever keeps saying ice skating is way beta then rollerskating and that its not graceful keep it to yourself. Some people like rollerskating some people like ice skating different thoughts.

i think roller skaters are just wannabe figure skaters. they do the same jumps and wear the same types of outfits and same types of moves and maneuvers. i agree with rowc46. the moves are just too choppy and ...thick i guess you could say. figure skating is much more graceful. i figure skate some so i can spot the differences.

guess what i used to art roller skate and it is fast and dificult and if u watch like world champions and stuff it doesnt look choppy. I think u people are just jealous we do jumps and stuff

I am not trying to be mean, but I think roller skating is very slow and a tad bit heavy footed. Why not Figure skating?? It's much more graceful and the jumps and spins are faster and light on the feet. Artistically it is a better sport as well. The pairs events are amazing.

have you ever watched figure roller skating..? believe me... its very fast. artistically, its exactly the same as ice. same jumps, same spins.. and its with a heavier boot because of the wheels. making jumps and spins harder to do because of the extra weight..

I wouldn't say it is artistically 'better' at all, it's different.

Pairs are amazing in roller skating, too.

Also, figure skating is ridculously expensive in comparison to roller. Plus in Britain, it's not that popular, therefore there's a definite lack of places to ice skate. Roller skating can be done outside or in most any sports rink.

dos it really matter what is harder or easier in your opinion? thats only your opinion. maybe some people find roller harder. Us for one. Try doing everything you do on ice with two 2 kilo weights strapped to your feet then tell us whats harder.

I did both back years ago and they are equal I feel. I thought figures was easier and got bored with it. I did not even want to do figures but, I had to do both. Your lucky you get a choice by your coach or skate team.

just some helpful tips, your loops would work a lot better if you keep your upper body up. remember to jump up and not around. and also lean over more in your travels. nice try on the double!

Except its considered wrong to land jumps on them, or spin on them, or jump off them for salchow and loop ( but sadly this is becoming common lately to loop of the toestop.  Salchow-ing of the toestop is technically wrong, but I doesn't seem as bad to me as looping off of it. )

It's strange. In this country anyway, jumps off the toe (for non-toe-assisted jumps) is wrong by tests standards, but not in competition. It's kind of irritating. I'm guilty of occassionaly jumping off my toe-stop, but only in salchow. It's a bad habit I wish I hadn't slipped into. Practice worked well though, and it is very achievable to jumps from the skate rather than toe even when you've got into that habit.

It's hard to tell with the quality of this clip, but I don't think they're blades, they're quad roller skates. Quads are designed for freestyle and people have been doing it for quite some time.

ummmmm i have been doing skating for about 3-4 years now. you will soon get your loop because when you do your loop, you will then have to do loop-loop, and then you will have to do axel(o nand by the way i landed in the splits before so be careful)

Hi i am a figure skater as well (on ice) you guys do a lot of similar things like camel spins (kinda) and sit spins too! What do you call the jumps that she does here because they look like loops in figure skating to me...or toe loops i cant really tell..anyways, how is this and figure skating different? Can you do spins like laybacks and biellmans? And do you have to enter your spins doing that "camel pump" thingie or can you just enter from back crossovers?

there are loops and toe loops in the program as well as axels and double toe loops.. pretty much what you can do on ice you can do on rollers... she hasn't done the layback spin yet but i have seen others do it and it looks great, though very hard to do !

well i do both you can do a little more on roller skates than ice skates like on roller skates theres a spin thing a camel pump you have to pump the front wheels in a camel spin position but you go in circles like a camel spin i will see if i can a video of it on youtube

yes it does help but sometimes it does get a little distracting, but it does encourage me more during my program !
