I disagree. This is the kind of thinking that leads people to never plan ahead, never build wells, never build infrastructure, never solve problems. "Do not be afraid of the future," etc. The opposite: Plan ahead and improve future generations' lives
If this man is no worried about the past, and not interested in the future. Then explain to me why he is wearing a watch. Suppose he is fearful about being late for something.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
this guy literally reverse engineered my brain and my inner voice that is always fuckin scared. in relating to social anxiety i've had 2 gfs [7/10 first, 9.5/10 second (broke up over religion)] and the latter breakup happened recently and since then I'm just always in fear, and all I do is create scenarios and play out situations step by step in my head. sprinkle some depression and self-esteem issues in those situations and you've got yourself fearing an entire web you weaved in your head.
You guys are missing the message. He didnt say live completely fearless. He was saying that we shouldn't be stressed out in our daily lives over pre-conceived predictions about the future that won't nessecarily happen. Or that we shouldnt be hindered from action by assuming the outcome will be bad. He isnt saying disregard common sense about rational reasons to be afraid.
@deeelive If thats the case then his message is not for everyone. Its for paranoid people. Most people have a rational level of fear. I think this guy is trying to sound a lot deeper than his message actually is. His big beard helps with the aura aswell, but what hes saying is a no brainer - dont be an a complete pussy in life.
@deeelive Aaahh the voice of reason. Well put deeelive. The self-fulfilling prophecy is something I grapple with on a daily basis. It helps if I concentrate on squeezing my fist in a ball. Unfortunately, deep breathing only seems to make me more anxious because I'm acknowledging that I'm feeling anxious by starting the deep breathing exercise; if that makes any sense.
EYE-OPENER. - had to listen a few times...kept thinking about what if a lion was about to have his meal with me....fear would definitely be there. Then as I listened a few more times - I heard - "not living with life - living in your mind" - What an eye opener - becoming alert to see how I am thinking and what is happening in my mind - tomorrow or yesterday or what is in front of me - what is there to be afraid of if it has already happened or may or may not happen - very interesting.
It would be great if I could just remain fearless and take whatever comes at me, but then I'm just risking my life, and possibly the lives of those around me.
I'd say that being fearless and living completely within the moment that's insanity. A father without fear is a danger to his family just like a father with too much fear. Stop looking for shortcuts to confidence people. The fear is supposed to be there in order to protect us from our selves. Do thing you want, face the music and you subconscious will let go of some fears. You guys like this because of his image. What if he was a rapper that said " Fu*k it all, shoot first ask questions later"?
@GiddiGabirou and I know it's about the fear you don't want for things that aren't happening right now but it's natural like a kid who thinks that there are monsters under his bed. You sleep anyway and then it let's go. I'm sorry if you want to believe this and feel super human for the rest of the day. I'm just saying that you shouldn't fake it.
@bungerman1000 Right if you are CURRENTLY being mauled of course you experience fear. He is saying if you are worried about being mauled by a Lion tomorrow you are worrying about something that does not exist which is a form of insanity.
@bungerman1000 Because you know you are going to be mauled by a lion with 100% certainty and therefor disregards what he is saying. Living in fear of potentially being mauled by a lion one day is insanity, living in fear because you WILL be mauled by a lion is called rational
@SteezyDynastarSkier the big picture.power is what u have, but it needs to be harness in your reality.if u have harness enough of consistent positive thinking n energy no lion will mauled u in your words..the most dangerous person is the 1 with no fear and nothing to lose. cause that is reality. a child has no fear so as it grows we teach it fear but what people dont teach is become the most positive dangerous person in the world and that teaching u will develop a new breed of human evolution
Well then confidence and bravery is also insanity? Fear is not something wrong to feel. Just go out, do the things you want to do over and over again until you're comfortable with it. Eventually fear might bring out the best in you. Bungee jumping is fun cause we are scared before we do it but afterwards it feels different. It's how you look at it. I think you should stop being afraid of being afraid cause that's telling yourself that you can't be you. Embrace your fear and love yourself.
@GiddiGabirou I dont think you're getting the point here. It seem like he's talking about the kind of fear that we don't want, but still is there, and being in the "now" suppose to be the way how to prevent ti
@denyseck2 I get the point I'm just saying that it's there for a reason and ignoring it might make it even worse. Basically it's in our subconscious and the best way of beating fear is overcoming situations that we are uncomfortable with. You can walk around and try not to think of it but but it's not real confidence. It's fake. It's similar to a typical tough guy syndrome. Fear is constant. Learn how to handle it. It's like the first day in school for many. Face the music and learn.

@paulthew2 Erm.... Your FEAR (and judging by your post, you probably don't know what Fear is) is in YOUR MIND. I mean, is it really that hard to grasp, sunshine?
@takeover08 No, I do get that....pity you don't get the point I'm making. Also, try and be original...I mean, erm and sunshine? Please. Oh, and before I go, you do know of the mathematical relationship between people who USE LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS..and stupidity? Erm, that's you, sunshine.
@paulthew2 You just said a whole lot of nothing. I do see it your way, and quite frankly, that is the way I too suffer with. But if you master that truth and understand that it is you who creates fear, you'll live a happier life (and that's speaking for both of us). Have you ever heard the quote: "Whoever you fear, is your God?" Think about that, paul.
@takeover08 Hmmm...let me get this right; I said a whole lot of nothing, which you then reply to?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Just get out there and Master the Truth, or whatever it is that fluffs your pillow.
Also, my point still stands; this 'we create our own fear' is fine for those who have the opportunity to contemplate their navel (no sarcasm intended), but for everyone else in the real world, it's bogus claptrap.
I know he's talking... but all I can hear and see is Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, you get the idea..
just because something hasnt arrived yet doesnt mean it doesnt exist or is imaginary.. if a bill is due in 5 days but i dont get payed for 8 days does that mean i shouldnt fear not paying my bill and facing consequences because its only imaginary fear.
the closer we get to a future event the more certain we are of its outcome which means at some point the future is NOT unknown. therefore the fear IS rational.
he doesnt fear anything because he has 1000's of people giving him food and money
This is such shit. Based on his argument I can just go stand in front of bullet train because hey since the train hasnt yet hit me my fear is totally imaginary. Which we all know is bullshit. How about fear is an evolutionary process that maximizes survival. Understand it, control it with rational thought but also use it to keep you safe. And stop listening to this new age self-help crap.
@cydonia21 you're totally missing the point. he's not saying be stupid and irrational. exactly the opposite. our modern problems and anxieties are largely irrational- anxiety about getting a perfect test score for example. we don't need to fear that. but common sense survival tactics are not what he's talking about here
@jimcat74 That may be possible but then he is taking a term which encompasses both the survival and anxiety (non-survival) aspects of the concept "fear" throwing one half of it away without telling us he is doing so and redefining the concept in a way that is completely unnecessary. So, even if what your saying is true (which i have doubts I think its more likely he is a snake oil salesman feeding people what they want to hear) he should tell us when he is redefining common terms/understanding.
@cydonia21 I see your point- but in the 1 minute and 37 seconds that is in this clip, we clearly do not see the rest of the speech. maybe he did clarify, maybe he did not. but personally I don't think he needs to. It was clear to me what he meant. Don't throw common sense aside. Some things are understood. Besides he's not selling anything. Only bringing light to the fact that our minds are indeed our worst enemies. No harm in buying in to that.
@cydonia21 Wow, seriously? If you're not pulling my leg then did we just have a respectful adult conversation on YouTube even though we initially disagreed? I love it!
@cydonia21 Your example plays into his argument. If you were standing in front of a moving bullet train and you had a fear of getting hit then your fear would be rooted in reality. But if you were no where near tracks and are currently afraid to get hit by a bullet train then the fear would be rooted in your imagination.
@chasehall So what your saying is you know the future? Go buy a lottery ticket. Hes not talking about simple things like if you jump infront of a car on the highway you wont die because it hasent happened yet... hes talking about the bigger things in life like money, death, health, love, etc.
this is totally awesome and makes a lot of sense...the only thing i can't help but think is that fear is a primal emotion that has developed in us through evolution and probably one of the reasons we as humans have come so far. If we weren't meant to have it, than why does it exist?
He's not entirely wrong....on the other hand - spiders do exist, and if the math is to believed, our entire lives we are never usually more than 3 feet away from a spider.
I'll do anything... BASE Jumping, skydiving, swimming with sharks, go in a cage full of spiders. Climb up the side of a building, swallow a sword, set myself on fire, extreme mountain biking, deep sea diving, flying with the blue angels. I'd do any physical activity that my body will actually let me do.... But ill be DAMNED!!!!! If i have to get up in front of a crowd and do an oral presentation.... It's really not fair....
@fsxaviator Haha, I have no problem with speaking in public. I don't like speaking in smaller groups tho. Having to flip conversation between individual people is hard for me, but a big crowd just merges all together and it's fine.
@canadianbud420 the future does not exist now, the past does not exist now. Right now you are perfectly fine, but tomorrow you may not be, or you may relive sufferings of the past...but neither of those are REALLY happening right now. In fact, the past and future don't exist. Are you alright right now? Then you are at peace, and there is nothing to be afraid of. There are an infinite amount of things that can "go wrong", but those are just imaginations that don't really exist now
So if you spend too much time reflecting on that which has yet to occur, you will miss the previous event which you looked forward to. And future becomes past before you have a time to see it because you are living too far ahead of yourself.
However, my interpretation of this may be that while we cannot know what the future brings, it is futile to worry over it. Because like he says, you are imagining things. And while these things may actually come about, it would be better to enjoy them and embrace them and realize that what you may consider a bad thing or a disappointment may actually be a wonderful thing that can be celebrated.
I find this interesting and I am not trying to dispute it or support it either way. But I find that it is very difficult to isolate your mind purely on the present. With memories, what you think you know has happened is accepted by faith that it actually did occur. This may sound strange, but it does not take much to cause the mind to begin to corrupt your belief of the past. We feel better when enough people share that same memory but the moment the consensus goes against us, we begin to doubt.
The logic of that statement is flawed. If a religious person says "water is wet" a non-religious person can't somehow agree with that statement? Similarly, this guy is stating the obvious when it comes to people's perception of the world around them, anyone regardless of their stance should be able to see the wisdom in what he's saying.
the possibility of loosing you job, that's pretty real. but i guess some indian hobo who scrapes by on handouts and pittance wouldn't know, because it's easier to talk that special sort of shit that way. hypocrisy-level: indian.
I would have loved to have him as my lecturer in philosophy! Really, just this vid gives me more inspiration than any five hour lecture i've ever had!
*Throws a baseball at your head* Oh look at that, you caught it? Why? Was it because you feared it hitting you? But that was just your imagination, because it hadn't already happened, so how did you know it was going to?
Although I like the video because his argument raises interesting philosophical points, I disagree with him upon the premise of anticipation. What is now Right now? A few seconds from now? If we're not anticipatory of our actions and have some fear of them, then we're screwed.
@factor17 Consider that you don't need to fear the baseball to catch it. Recognising something as harmful need not be attributed to fear. Fear has helped us from an evolutionary stand-point as it helps us associate good and bad and trigger our fight/flight instincts. From a logical stand-point it's not really necessary.
@factor17 can you miss the point any more? he wasnt talking about dangerous situations. he was aiming this argument at people who are afraid of irrational things and are suffering because of it. and there are SO MANY people like that.
@factor17 you can act according to the environment, but it doesnt mean that you have to be reactive, to get angry, to get irritated or anxious to the surrounding... That´s what it means
does this mean never run away cause you THINK these black thugs are going to rob you? fear helps me keep my shit and scratch free so i'm not convinced.
@WHlTEDEVlL The problem is, fear does not always get it right. Sometimes fear is helpful, sometimes it is not. E.g. when mountain climbing fear is very bad. You need to be very focused and concentrated, as soon as fear slips in your brain is occupied by this feeling and you might make a mistake.
@WHlTEDEVlL There´s a huge difference between being FEARFUL and being CONCIOUS about the environment... It´s just that there´s some people that are not aware of the difference.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol he is dumb as fuck. His argumentation line :
1. you always fear events in the future
2. the future doesn't exist (yet)
3. Therefore you fear things that don't exist -> you are insane
What he forgot is that the future is pretty well predictable most of the times and fear helps us to avoid situations we don't like.
E.g. we are on the railtracks and a train is coming our direction really fast. We now fear "the future, the nonexistent" because we will die in a few seconds. Is this insane? No!
I fucking love this.

How about fear is an evolutionary process that maximizes survival. Understand it, control it with rational thought but also use it to keep you safe. And stop listening to this new age self-help crap.
cydonia21 2 weeks ago
@cydonia21 you're totally missing the point. he's not saying be stupid and irrational. exactly the opposite. our modern problems and anxieties are largely irrational- anxiety about getting a perfect test score for example. we don't need to fear that. but common sense survival tactics are not what he's talking about here
jimcat74 2 weeks ago
@jimcat74 That may be possible but then he is taking a term which encompasses both the survival and anxiety (non-survival) aspects of the concept "fear" throwing one half of it away without telling us he is doing so and redefining the concept in a way that is completely unnecessary. So, even if what your saying is true (which i have doubts I think its more likely he is a snake oil salesman feeding people what they want to hear) he should tell us when he is redefining common terms/understanding.
cydonia21 2 weeks ago
@cydonia21 I see your point- but in the 1 minute and 37 seconds that is in this clip, we clearly do not see the rest of the speech. maybe he did clarify, maybe he did not. but personally I don't think he needs to. It was clear to me what he meant. Don't throw common sense aside. Some things are understood. Besides he's not selling anything. Only bringing light to the fact that our minds are indeed our worst enemies. No harm in buying in to that.
jimcat74 2 weeks ago
@jimcat74 I can definitely see that. Keeping that in mind I have changed my view on the video, thanks.
cydonia21 1 week ago
@cydonia21 Wow, seriously? If you're not pulling my leg then did we just have a respectful adult conversation on YouTube even though we initially disagreed? I love it!
jimcat74 1 week ago
@cydonia21 Your example plays into his argument. If you were standing in front of a moving bullet train and you had a fear of getting hit then your fear would be rooted in reality. But if you were no where near tracks and are currently afraid to get hit by a bullet train then the fear would be rooted in your imagination.

this is totally awesome and makes a lot of sense...the only thing i can't help but think is that fear is a primal emotion that has developed in us through evolution and probably one of the reasons we as humans have come so far. If we weren't meant to have it, than why does it exist?

No. Fear is an evolutionary defense mechanism, and likely the only reason we've survived this long as a species.
Call it crazy, but the fear of the non-existential is very often based on existential memories.

And future becomes past before you have a time to see it because you are living too far ahead of yourself.
superpoot1 2 weeks ago
However, my interpretation of this may be that while we cannot know what the future brings, it is futile to worry over it. Because like he says, you are imagining things. And while these things may actually come about, it would be better to enjoy them and embrace them and realize that what you may consider a bad thing or a disappointment may actually be a wonderful thing that can be celebrated.
superpoot1 2 weeks ago
I find this interesting and I am not trying to dispute it or support it either way. But I find that it is very difficult to isolate your mind purely on the present. With memories, what you think you know has happened is accepted by faith that it actually did occur. This may sound strange, but it does not take much to cause the mind to begin to corrupt your belief of the past. We feel better when enough people share that same memory but the moment the consensus goes against us, we begin to doubt.
superpoot1 2 weeks ago
The logic of that statement is flawed. If a religious person says "water is wet" a non-religious person can't somehow agree with that statement? Similarly, this guy is stating the obvious when it comes to people's perception of the world around them, anyone regardless of their stance should be able to see the wisdom in what he's saying.

If we're not anticipatory of our actions and have some fear of them, then we're screwed.
factor17 2 weeks ago
@factor17 Consider that you don't need to fear the baseball to catch it. Recognising something as harmful need not be attributed to fear. Fear has helped us from an evolutionary stand-point as it helps us associate good and bad and trigger our fight/flight instincts. From a logical stand-point it's not really necessary.
casualmeat 2 weeks ago
@factor17 can you miss the point any more? he wasnt talking about dangerous situations. he was aiming this argument at people who are afraid of irrational things and are suffering because of it. and there are SO MANY people like that.

@factor17 you can act according to the environment, but it doesnt mean that you have to be reactive, to get angry, to get irritated or anxious to the surrounding... That´s what it means

WHlTEDEVlL 2 weeks ago
@WHlTEDEVlL The problem is, fear does not always get it right. Sometimes fear is helpful, sometimes it is not. E.g. when mountain climbing fear is very bad. You need to be very focused and concentrated, as soon as fear slips in your brain is occupied by this feeling and you might make a mistake.

lol he is dumb as fuck.
No!
