I listened to Keyes for a while, but it cost me a mint in Pepto-Bismol. He does what every demagogue does; he preaches what everyone agrees with, and then points out certain groups as enemies of these things. In this case it's liberals and homosexuals. When Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists, it was to explain exactly what the meaning of the First Amendment is, and he did use that phrase "separation of church and state." SCOTUS since then have used that phrase repeatedly. Madison defined it as meaning the separation of religion and government. I watched on C-Span the Party's gross distortions of The Bill of Rights in addressing gay marriage, but this topic is only the tip of the iceberg.

seperation of church and state is of course not mentioned in the constitution. It is a logical concept that the founding fathers(even the christian ones), thought necessary. It of course does not mandate seperation of statesman and spirituality though. A man can be devoutly religious and still be president, but he is obligated to do his job in a manner detached from religion except in how it informs his morality so as to govern fairly and equally
