I like your style of singing, it kind of sounds like the song. Kind of. Awesome playing and I know how hards it is to play and sing at the same time. Props to you.
Well there's Fender written on the headstock. True it's hard to tell the difference with a Squier on this video, both visually and soundwise. But that's my fault. In reality, the Highway one is a better instrument.
the original isnt done using a bass guitar at all.. "the sound is actually created by running Jack White's semi-acoustic guitar (a 1950s style Kay Hollowbody) through an octave pedal set down an octave."
well yeah the members...but if you listen theres bass on the CD's because its so low that a guitar would never be able to hit the note...like i play bass so you tend to recognize whats a bass and whats a guitar with effects...there is bass in the songs even though they dont play bass on stage...every song needs bass or it sounds worse than this kids singing
If you actually listen to the recording it's pretty easy to tell that it's a guitar put through effect pedal. There are occasions where Jack white puts bass on The White Stripe's recordings, but Seven Nation Army is, ironically, not one of them.
Sorry to bash your ego, but obviously and you need to familiarize yourself with guitar and bass a little more. It's called a guitar with an octave pedal. It's kind of like a guitar imitating a bass. But no, it isn't a bass. And many bands don't use bass in almost all of there songs, including The White Stripes.
Of course it creates rhythm, but so does a drummer, just in a more complicated way. Not every band needs a bass player, no almost every band needs a bass player, but many and most generic bands do need one.
The Doors didn't have a bass player, their songs had some of the best bass lines. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek was responsible for the bass. It's true the White Stripes have often performed on stage without a bass altogether and even though there might not be a bass player in this song, there's definitely a bass line. But it's good to have an open-minded approach to music sometimes. Apocalyptica has done an amazing job covering electric guitars with cellos.
@bornfornothing97 on the recording I think he was using a semi-acoustic guitar with an octave pedal to get that bass sound in addition to his usual electric guitar. On stage he only plays the electric guitar with an octave pedal and distortion turned off during the verses.
There is definitely a bass line in this song, but no bass guitar.
On stage they've never performed with an actual bass player as far as I know. It's only the two of them, Meg on drums and Jack on guitars and piano.
.. Ill leave the comment on the vocals for when Im feeling disgruntaled. But holy shit please to all bass players: stop covering a song that doesnt have bass in the first place and neglecting the history of amazing and challenging basslines the have come before.
you realize there are other strings than the E and A right? just saying. you wouldnt have to play that far up the neck if you would use the other strings. you sound alright on the bass though, better than i could do on vocals... but maybe leave the singing to who originaly did it next time, ok?
Thanks. I only used the thumb for the first two verses to get a quieter sound with the side of my palm and of my little finger muting the rest of the strings close to the bridge. A bit like pizzicato on classical guitar.
Quite handy when you use a distortion/fuzz pedal like I had here (Big Muff Pi).
I switched to normal finger technique for the chorus and the last verse.
Hey not bad dude bass playing was good but not to be offensive you need to work on the singing a bit once you get the voice right you' ll be very good make it lighter than it is.
EADG. Main riff is 12-1215-12-10-8-7 on the E string. That's how I played it, some play it differently. I don't think there's ONE way to do it, whatever sounds good to you.
Hey, ur good... dont listen to those comments, feel free to sing while you play :D that what i do when i have nothing else to do :P Thumbs UP FOR YOU MAN!!
Hey thanks a lot :) I don't really mind about the bad comments though, if people think I'm crap then so be it. I don't have any record to sell so who cares :p I have fun when I play with my friends and good laughs when I try to sing, and that's all I'm asking music for : entertainment.
Thanks for your comment about my bass playing. Of course I'm not a singer. Never took any singing lessons, never will, the point of youtube for me is post things for fun. If I wanted to prove anything or try and become "famous" I'd open a myspace page or whatever, not post on Youtube. Everytime someone says "you sing like crap but you play bass ok" I'm happy. The other way round would have totally depressed me though :p
Wow man, you're brave putting this up :). The singing wasn't too bad, the playing was pretty good but try playing it on the A string and see what it sounds like. And it's funny how fags always comment about there being no bass in White Stripes songs, even if there isn't you can still play it lol.
.....ok.....lets see, dude u played it well, just dont sing....for people who comment...
if there r just 2 people who play in the white stripes meg white = drums jack white= guitar, electric piano:P....where is the bass??, there isnt...on live u dont hear a bass...
Because Jack White, the guy who wrote that song, doesn't play bass but clearly wanted a bass sound in that song during the verses, so he used a barritone guitar and tried to make it sound like a bass as much as possible and kept his "true" guitar sound for the chorus.
And just my opinion but this song sounds better played with bass AND guitar.
I believe many of the album songs actually do have bass but aren't played live. There's also a vid somewhere of Jack White playing this song (I think) live using a bass, the only one time live.
Hehe ok, no offense taken, I don't care about my singing. Are you sure about the string though? I've seen all sorts of tabs, some on the E string, some on the A, some even on the D so I ended up playing it by ear. But since it's played by Jack White on a baritone guitar how do you know what are the "right" bass tabs?
do you people not listen to real music? i dont understand how anyone can think this is good, its like everyone on youtube is retarded or deaf...i just dont understand its so embarassing
It's not great that's for sure, but wasn't Youtube meant for amateurish videos? I for one don't understand people who complain on Youtube about people who play music as a hobby saying "you're nothing compared to real musicians like Paul Mc Cartney or Jaco Pastorious" that's true so what! Am I better than 5 years ago? definitely, am I still getting better? I hope so. Will I one day get to the level of "real music" probaly never but I hope I will nevertheless.
And btw, you can say whatever you want about my video, if you think it's crap, fine, does that give you the right to judge the tastes of other people commenting here? Absolutely not!
Don't worry :) as you can hear I'm not a professional singer and never will, I'm just having fun with an instrument I love playing ; singing because I felt like it at that moment, and posting it on a website meant for amateur videos : Youtube, people can laugh or enjoy what I play, I really don't care it's really just a hobby :)
hey...vocal really is not a big deal here.. is not agreat voice but.. congratulations because this song played and singed at the same time is really hard.. well form me.. i had do just PEA but,, mine its play...
I think you did a pretty good job, The vocals are actualy pretty good. They sound somthing simmilar to The Clash or some Ramone songs. Sweet Bass man, but wich do you think is better your Highway one or Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass.
Hehe thanks. About the bass (answers across several replies due to youtube limits).
Well the Highway and the Deluxe are totally different. The Highway is passive meaning the sound is sent raw from the bass to whatever you plug it in while the Deluxe has a built-in preamp, it changes the sound quite a bit and also gives you more control over tone. Now on paper it might sound like active basses are necessarily better, but in the world of music it doesn't, it's all about personal feelings.
Ok thanks, you have a point. Today I performed in front of a lot of people with a beaten up Ibanez that belongs to my school. I did not have time to set the controls to my liking. It sounded ok anyway. Your comments realy helped.
Passive basses usually sound more full and round, and closer to the basses (and thus old records) from the 60's and the 70's, active basses are usually a bit more crisp, bright and responsive and yet it's not always true depending on other parameters such as woods used (maple will sound brighter than ash wood). I really can't explain it with words you'd have to play each to hear the difference.
Sorry but you should probably get better at hitting the right notes on both valas and bass....

And btw, you can say whatever you want about my video, if you think it's crap, fine, does that give you the right to judge the tastes of other people commenting here? Absolutely not!

Unlike most bass player vids on youtube, you have your transsitions down well and you play a lot more fluent. Not so sure about the singing though :P
