This video is incredible. Sean seems like he is doing hardly anything, but if you close your eyes the music is so full of spirit I just want to get up & dance for joy. His bow technique is mesmerizing, this is really fast playing!
i have a camcorder recording dated 19 july 2003 of sean playing the fiddle ,the uileann pipes in our house . a pure genius and he even played the masons apron for me even though he had gone off the tune.i first heard him play this on a tape from 1972. my late father and he were great friends for many years.Slan libh.
Brilliant music, Just one question is that Vincent Brown in the auidance from 2:19-2:26 looks very like him......Or maybe i am just going fucking blind
Sean was also an excellent ullian pipes player. He played them on our American tour in the 60s. After every show he was always invited to someones house for another music session. He was a one off.
I have happy memories as a child listening to Sean Maguire. My Mother Eileen Stapleton (Lane) played piano in the Four Star Quartet in the 1960's with Sean Maguire fiddle, Bill Power banjo and Sean Cotter bass. They recorded the best traditional record ever made , recorded at Bill Stapleton's Studios ( my late father) Dublin . I donated recordings of Sean Maguire to the Irish Traditional Music Archives ! .
Clarebannerman I see in the sean mcguire write up that you say hes from belfast , not sure if this is true, I was at many of his concerts in cavan and he said this is where he came from (maybe he meant his people came from cavan) also Joe Burke at a concert addressed him as the genius from cavan.
Im from france but l like to go t o cavan whenever I get the chance. ,
Never ever heard of him being from Caven before, eerytime I heard him play it was in Belfast and several murals have been painted in his honor in the west belfast area ^^
just wondering did this man play in manchester in the 60s my own motherwas great fiddle player in that time but sadly she passed to spirit 30 years ago i am sure hes name was mentioned
Really don't like the sound of that instrument (was forced to play it when I was younger) but it sounds great in his hands, really unique to hear it played like that (by the way, thats exceptionally difficult to do on a fiddle!!!)
I can´t believe the crowd are just sitting there!!! I´d be stamping my feet and whooping!!!, thank you Clare, you put some brilliant stuff on here x give us some Gavin Marwick and bellevue rendezvous!!
my grandpa and my dad and uncles would jam with him when he would come to cleveland... at our house on sunday, roast beef and sean mcquire as long as they weren't the ones playing!
The middle tune is called Lad O'Beirne's Favourite. Lad O'Beirne was a fiddle player who resided and played, I believe, in New York City around the 1930's - could someone verify?
The last tune is "The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Welcome to Shetland" by Willie Hunter - at least, Seán McGuire's take on it. Anybody know the names of the other two?
Sean - I had a couple of his LP's years ago one called 'Man of achievement' its great to see him in action, after hearing him for years. I always thought that some of his tunes were over dubbed but NO - they were all played on one fiddle at the same time by a genius !! RIP thanks for the music
Yes, and if watched closely - especially at 2:33 - it can be seen very slightly flexing at the top-right of the instrument - no doubt a reflex action from a player used to acoustic mode.
(All accordian bellows can be locked in a closed position)
omg he is now my idol im only fourteen and i love playing fiddle music especially irish :] its sd to see such good talent be gone he sounds really good
Maguire was a pure genius and in his golden period unsurpassed! His playing evolved over the years from a clean vituosic into a magical power house of exploding flamboyance and self expression. That was real music from the depths of his being. What an honour to have known him.
Danced to his brilliant music in many dancing championships in the sixties. He made the music come alive particularly the Masons Apron. He toured with us round Americia with our dancing school ( McCoys) and was a great guy. PS. He played even better when he had a few jars. He is sadly missed.
What a legend. A fiddle player who'll never be forgotten. He has left a big mark on the tradition no doubt and, whilst his playing is generally a bit quick and frantic for my liking, I do enjoy watching and listening to his performances and he can hold an audience indeed!
My first time ever hearing Sean McGuire, it wont be my last. exceptionally brilliant

God bless you Mr McGuire, you gave and continue to give pleasure to so many people, with your masterful and sensational playing.

is the accordion guy doing playback?
he doesn't open the bellows!
sope92 3 years ago
It's an electro/acoustic accordian. No need for bellows in electronic mode.
They've been around for many a year and have all the capabilities of a conventional keyboard when amplified.
KKJ52 3 years ago
but does it have bellows?
sope92 3 years ago
Yes, and if watched closely - especially at 2:33 - it can be seen very slightly flexing at the top-right of the instrument - no doubt a reflex action from a player used to acoustic mode.
(All accordian bellows can be locked in a closed position)
