Please. Please. I have tried so many times to fold a magic ball but I fail and I am 11 and I cry and cry and rip my hair out. My name is justin and I would be soo gratful if you could send me an email at justinchollar@gmail.com
To see if I could buy one or if you could send me one, I could send you a letter with a pre stamped and adressed letter or anything, just please please help. Thanks, justin.
I can't see creases on the units in the assembling demonstration. But maybe your right. Between, I didn't mean increased, I meant uncreased. Sorry about that. :P
And I'm sure it won't affect the video! This video is amazingly clear - like all your other videos. I've had some problems making my videos clear... They are clear enough, I hope!
Very nice instructions, Evan! =) I really like those effects.
Out of curiosity, I see that you have assembled the model in the video. But have folded it before the recording... So have you disassembled it? But those units look increased (you know, the crease you make when assembling it).
The only solution I can see is that you have refolded it. :)
Actually, no... I made 30 new units for the assembly in the video, but I wasn't exactly satisfied with the video when I first recorded the first few units of the assembly. So, I recorded that part of the assembly for a second time (apparently with the units that I already used in the first attempt). I actually didn't notice that until you mentioned it, so I hope it's not too much of a problem!
But maybe u could tell the measurements of the completed model if i were to use 4" squares~Coz i couldn't be sure of the size by looking at its picture placed beside a 4" square..sorry :)
I'm sorry about the confusion... I meant to include the measurements of the completed model in the video, so thanks for pointing that out! If you start with 4" squares, the final model will be about 9.5" in diameter (the distance between two opposite points). I hope that helps! If you need any further clarification, please let me know!
Great work as always Evan :D Nice clear folding instructions! Been looking forward to seeing this one for a while as I love modular origami! The unit reminds me of the unit used to make Compound of Five Tetrahedra but instead of using 1:3 paper your using 1:2. Just wondering if you could make different models with this unit? Maybe make an Icosahedron with 20 triangular star faces? Not sure if this would work or not, but can get back to you when I've had chance to try it :)
@edwardholmes91 Thank you very much, I'm glad you like the it! You're exactly right, this unit is very similar to Tom Hull's unit, the only real difference is the dimensions of the paper used to fold the units. Several designers have independently discovered this unit, but Francesco Mancini was the first to use them create this shape. Also, these units can certainly be used to make various shapes. Several variations can be seen in Francesco Mancini's Flickr Photostream.
@EzOrigami Thanks, I imagine any of the Platonic solid can be made and many of the Archimedian ones too. When I've done my exams I will give a go at making some variations and can send you some pictures of the results if you like? I especially like Tom Hulls Five Tetrahedra but still struggle to get the third tetrahedra in place! My favourite variation is when made of money. bit(dot)ly(forwardslash)whrSS6 This is a picture of one I made :-)
@edwardholmes91 Yeah, one of the reasons why I like this model so much is because the unit is so versatile. It's not very difficult to fold, and many fantastic shapes can easily be created from it! Once you get around to folding this model, I would love to see pictures of your results.
By the way, great job folding the FIT out of money, it is so clean! :D
Do you have an account on Flickr? If not, I would recommend making one because I'm sure many people would love to see what you have folded!
@EzOrigami Thank you for your kind comments. I have an account of Dailybooth my user is edwardholmes91 on there if you would like to see more of my modular origami :) I practised the FIT 3 times before making it with money. But as I live in the UK I had to buy it from the travel agents... the lady looked stunned when I asked her for 30 x $1 dollar bills that were crisp because I was using them to fold an origami model! Cost about £19.90 at the time I seem to recall. One of my favourites though!
@edwardholmes91 Great, thanks for sharing. I will check it out! It probably is a good idea to practice a model a few times before attempting it with money...I've folded the FIT several times, but never out of money-- maybe I'll give that a try!
@EzOrigami Well I've finally got round to folding this one. Made it using some gift wrap and I think it looks great! Tried to make an icosahedron but it doesn't work. The limit for this unit is a square shape I think. Hexagons could also be made as well so a truncated icosahedron could be made I suppose. Not had chance to take a picture but as soon as I do I will upload it to my Dailybooth. Thanks once again for posting a tutorial on this amazing model Evan! Great work! :D
@AbRas644 I'm sure you could use tant, but I prefer using thinner paper to fold this model. In my opinion, copy paper seems to be the perfect thickness for this model, it comes in a variety of colors, and it holds the units together quite well.
@EzOrigami hi, could you please tell me what you call "copy paper", i m not a native english speaker and do not live in an english speaking country, never heard of it before and google translate is useless about that
And yes, I talk as I fold the model... I just feel like it would be much more difficult to time everything perfectly if I were to edit my voice in afterwards.
Your instructions and camera angle are perfect, I subbed.

@EzOrigami Thanks for clearing that out :D
i'm quite sure i'll use a smaller paper then..coz 9.5" is kinda big..and i don't have much space to store things haha~
Once again thanks a lot and hope u'll continue to bring great tutorials! But of coz don't force urself when u're tired or busy :) Have a great day!

Great job Evan! You found a clear folding sequence.
Altough other designers indipendently discovered this unit nobody thought about this shape.
I hope everybody will enjoy this model. For more fun you can try to change the paper proportions and the assemblies.
Happy folding
