You are very lucky you got a grand to play on. Try opening the lid when you practise because it gives you the full capacity for the grand piano and the lid doesn't make it any softer just makes it a bit more dull.
Practise on full stick dynamics control will be much better when you have it open...don't waste your grand piano with the lid down...
