Well ...I have watched several of your videos now, and I sum them up as interesting, informative, entertaining. I find it admirable that you are giving people a great resource and knowledge of how to live off the land. Keeping it simple and enjoyable. Best of luck to you. ~Monika
ive made a washing machine from an old paint bucket, the lid to go with it and a brand new never used plunger(never used for obvious reasons lol). i just put a hole in the lid and im pretty sure you could figure out how it works. compaired to you im am way out of my league when it comes to self reliance but if you never heard of this contraption i figuered you would find it interesting
very cool, i cannot wait to make one myself, impress my dad is enough payback for me, i am thinking of quick washing apples for canning in this, i was also thinking how i could rig it my rocker as i read ur book the old-fashioned way and do "work" while i rock!!! lol i could go out today and buy the equipment (if i dont pay my AT+T bill) but i think i will challenge myself to finding the materials since i have access to discards all over the place-like dad's place, thanks a bunch,
Stop complaining about him using the phrase "Off the Grid," now days this is off the grid. As time changes and become more effective and efficient method of living change with it. I believe that this "off the grid" living just more efficient.
Paint PVC so the sun will not degrade the plastic. Paint the composter black. You can add a copper coil with a caps to your composter you will have a compost hot water heater suspend water barrel under roof collect rainwater next composter then the clothes washer lower than that? Use a insulated container to store hot water for shower hoist up to shower ? Drive post in ground install rollers/tires or some bikes and eliminate the need for wood center? Use mop bucket perss to ring out clothes?
Any ideas for environments such as up here in Canada. The climate posses a whole new list of problems for off the grid living....It will be require some more research!
@magicdonjuan27 "Off the grid" is used to mean a bunch of things, but here, it's used literally: off the electrical grid. Not "outside the medical system" or "disincluded from the modern economy", just not hooked up to electrical utilities. (If you don't wanna be talked to like you're stupid... then don't play dumb.)
when growing up we didnt have much water.my mom used a old ringer washer and saved the wash and rinse water and rotated them out and when the wash water got to dirty she would the use the rinse water as the wash water and maybe add some soap if it wasent soapy enuff and start all over again...then hung them out side to dry or in the winter or raining in the basment....
thank you so much, youve changed my view on things. a friend of mine has 200 acres in victoria australia and is allowing me to lease 1 acre off him at a really low price(some annual work). im drawing up my plans based om your cabin and im planning to use it as aweekender ( and eventially retire to). ill spend the next few years developing the cabin so its independant. thank you again brother and god bless.
on the bottom were u put plug i would use a plug with hose threads so u can hook up a garden hose to it to drain tub lay hose wrer u want water to go with a vaule to turn it on or off then u won't need a bucket to catch water just a thou i working on making one so i can get your book i been wanting it for over a year money is tight lol if ya know what i mean ever time i turn around kids want or need somethiung 3 kids 9 grand kids 1 great grand daugther keep making them 5 stars
This is good info. I lived with no electricity for almost 4 years before I put my offgrid system together. Washing cloths was the hardest think I had to do. The first thing I hooked up to my electricity was a cloths washer. I would have killed for this info back then. Thanks for sharing this.
On the washer, I would make the PVC pipe longer and add a weight on one end so that all you had to do is pump the other end of the pipe up and down. I think it would be easier to agitate that way.
it's a Machine! I'd probably try to upgrade the axel, Sleeve that dowel with a piece of pvc maybe.I was thinking that a couple years exposure to moisture & microbes would eat that broomstick right up.Great Video Lamar! Thank You!
You could add a pvc sleeve over the wood dowel or use a length of pipe. My old composter has a pipe for the center pole but this one will be used strictly as a clothes washer.
Thanks for sharing this! I got your book and it is awsome! To others: If you have not got his books and you live off grid or are thinking about it you will want his books..I guarantee it. Great information....Priceless.
If i was going to make the washing machine the only thing i would do different because i have the parts laying around is make it pedal powered and have it be able to turn 360 degrees
You should read the book "The Humanure Handbook", you don't really need to turn compost..but I would highly recommend you read this book, you'll like it.
Humanure is a good book but in order to get the outside material in to the center where the microbes are working a good turn or tumble is recommended to speed up the process.
In a humanure pit composter you pour the compost in to a depression in the center and because it is going to sit for over a year it does not have to work fast. Both systems work but are for a different purpose.
THE BARREL IS NOT PVC, BUT THE CEMENT WILL ACT AS A SEAL. NICE IDEA.

Thank you for all of your tutorials. I am only 16, but watching your videos has helped me plan out how I want to use my money when I get a job.
I plan on hopefully buying some land behind my grandparents house, or near there and build myself a small cabin like yours.

its'nt it easier just putting the compost in any barrel, roll it around on the lawn abit for some weeks from times to times?

Would some rubber washers keep it from sliding around?

You are aware you're very much on the grid. When you connect to the internet that ip address is instant

@magicdonjuan27 If you exist off-grid 99% of the time, and are only connected to use the Net, I think we can all consider that living off-grid.

@solarcabin Well, in the book he says not to turn it. But, it's different than yours so that might be why.
