  • how do you orbit around the object

  • is that model from google sketchup

  • why dont you extrude

  • did you model this or can i download it

  • Why not make a perfectly straight leg, then duplicate it. Then use scale to space the joints apart.

  • Man your really the best, your explanations are simple and very useful, also every1 stop making dumb comments when the answer is in the videos just watch it all

  • in the blender newest wersion, when i click space, it doesnt show new armature.

  • @monjanse Try pressing Shift+A, if not go to the top and click "Add" then armature

  • How about redoing this series on Armature with Blender 2.5x?

  • how do you move around? i mean like the camera not the person

  • Comment removed

  • what blender is this? 2.55?

  • @zeekmizaka: It's blender 2.5 I think or 2.45

  • ty so much man

  • THANK YOU!

  • A protip: you can just rightclick then end of an armature and extrude a new one by pressing e

  • how/where can i see/check same technique and study of a similar character but with shoes, gloves and stuff added on????

  • I didnt watch the wole video sorry, but okay, i parent my armatures from bone heat, and sometimes they don't move properly, like out of sync or somethin, like the bone moves 90degrees and the arm moves say 80 degrees.

  • @OCoptimusconvoy again, look at my video on Weight Painting in Blender. Also, if you don't watch the whole video how can you think the techniques will work?

  • @bugzilla2001 sorry it's cuz i wan't really followin the video i just wanted to ask a question :( sorry. ill check out the video. Does it say anything about my poblem?

  • @OCoptimusconvoy The problem you are having is that bones other than the one you want are influencing the areas of the model, so you will have to go in and touch up the weights for these bones using the Weight Painting tools.

  • @bugzilla2001 Oh thanks so much!!!! I'll try this!

  • JeffreySonRs?

  • dude did you make the object or was it premade in blender if it is can you tell me how to get it into my game tnxx

  • @MegaXHD That model came from the Lightwave content disk.

  • @MegaXHD If you are looking for a character designer program, search MakeHuman, one word. Its an open source program like blender that lets you make custom human models, which can be imported into blender.

  • @MegaXHD Learn to model yourself or pay a talented modeler to work for you..

    Don't use premade models..

  • -_-i dont know how to rigg i need help i tried your video no it dident happen i need things to be simplified some one HELP ME!!!!!!

  • how do i make an animal move itself in a game ? so that its not like flying around without and movment

    pls help...

  • Seriously, if I hadn't stumbled upon this tutorial, I would have given up on blender - I couldn't stand it - I'm not a graphics guy, and have only ever used 3DS and some XSI, but your explanation of rigging and 'shortcuts' is better than anywhere I've found so far. Thanks a million, blender is my new favorite!

  • when i rigg it the mesh goes all funny & dosent move & looks like spikes?

  • 3:43....... that was very awkward.....

  • thx dude i just did a rig in like 30 secs after watching these like 50 times in a row

  • size of the body and the armature dont match :(

    how do i fix it?

  • excellent tutorial! much better than the gazillion ones out there by certain someone with weird voice :\

  • Hello

You can do the same thing you did at 6:57 with the legs?

  • Bugzilla, I have a question: before you add the bones, is your character just one object - or is he a collection of different body-parts?

  • @vladxx2 It's all one object

  • @bugzilla2001 zhow do you rig if you have more than one object

    Im making a transformer

  • @bugzilla2001

how do you rig if you have more than one object

    Im making a transformer

  • @vladxx2 one part. an armature will not normally work on high poly characters.

  • how do you box select like at 4:40 ish

  • @McScappy In this version of Blender the shortcut is "b"

  • where did u get the model??

  • thx ur a big help for my new snowman animation

  • Is there any way to join different pieces together, like say I've got a head and a chest. How would I put them together so they'd be like one piece?

  • @MrArrowmonkey ctrl + g like that you create a new group

  • can i create the main bone after the others??

  • @sodium44 any bone could be main bone no matter at what moment you are creating it

  • ah sorry nevermind

  • why dont you just select the tip of the bone and extrude it instead of duplicating one and parenting them?

  • you are bad a.s.s.s.s.

  • 8:42... let's create a ... boner.

  • very helpful, thanks

  • 40 seconds in you add armature in OBJECT MODE

  • @hunzedog Yes. You add new objects in Object mode. Did you watch the whole video? At 1:44 I enter Edit mode to add the child bones and edit them. Everyone who is having problems with this video, it is because you are NOT watching the whole tutorial! You must have patience and PAY ATTENTION!

  • @bugzilla2001 Wait, you're actually suggesting people pay attention?

  • Thank you very much for that tutorial, its great, and very helpful you always say what key have to be pressed etc.

  • thanks i will try again...and watch again..

  • i am new to blender so forgive my nube ness.

i have been having to put bones in one at a time

when i am in obj mode if i pick any bone it lights up all the bones.

if i make all the bones by extracting instead of putting them in one at a time.

makes it impossible to parent bones when i cant single pick em

i figured out anime studio but this is way mo harder.....

    thanks ....back to school

  • @hunzedog You are doing some major things wrong. Watch the video again. You don't add new bones in Object mode, you add them in Edit mode. What mode you are in is very important when working with Armatures.

  • @bugzilla2001 thats strange cuz the first thing you did was add a bone in object mode

this has got me so confused ..

im ready to blame the program but i know better.

i should have figured this out already...

  • @hunzedog No. I was not in Object mode, I was in Edit mode. It's not possible to add bones the way you are talking about unless you keep joining different armatures together. That is not what I was doing. Make sure you are in Edit mode when you add new bones to the Armature.

  • Is it possible you can send me such a charictor to use in blender?. I have tried for hours but i cannot get the programs to work together (vista).

  • which version of blender are u using for this video?

  • make a tutorial of modeling thet character!please

  • did you use mirror when you doing that character?

  • You are duplicating the leg overly complicated. Go in to object mode. Select the leg. Press Shift + D and then escape. Now press Ctrl + M and then X. Now you have dublicated the leg and mirrored it to the x axis. Much easier and better way.

  • I saw what you said about the "x-Axis Mirror" feature; however, I have already made one half of the model's rig. Am I screwed over?

  • So, judging by this theres no way to completely mirror a set of bones to make sure that it's perfectly congruent on each side rather than trying to eyeball it and make it as close to the same as you can? (as you did in this tutorial) Im rigging a model for animation and Ive made it only by extruding from one original bone at the head (so that they are all connected) and I want a uniform way to mirror the apendages accross the center of the body to make it completely mirrored. Is this possible?

  • can you pm all of the 'codes' i guess you could say... i mean like what letters and buttons on keyboard do what... cause i can't figure anything out :p

  • I have a question. Can you make a rig BEFORE you have a mesh or seperate meshes? I wanted to know because I want to make a basic rig for robots, save it, so I can open it up and change it accordingly. I want the armatures pre-rigged and then parent robot parts to the rig afterward. Can I do that?

  • @Gr1mmReap3rT2 Well, you COULD, but.... well, it would be a son of a bitch to pull off, as you'd probably have a lot of problems getting it to line up later. The best way to do it is to make the mesh first.

  • x axis mirror Wont work??

  • that model looks extremely similar to Jeff lews :O

  • 3:47 OBJECTION!!!

you are NOT obligated to right click to select.

I hated so much this 'style', so I search and dig a lot till I found:

in the viewport change from '3d view" to "user preferences"

in under the "view & controls" there's an option "select with" (right or left button)

(and my advice, is also to change the "view rotation" from 'trackball' to 'turnaround" and turn on the option (right below it) "around selection" )

only then, I could work with blender without feeling like drunk

  • @aceofspades02 LOL. I was the same exact way when I first opened Blender, haha. I started moving and clicking like most old fashioned programs and the view and everything was so messed up. I changed everything to exactly what you say here. Now I can't remember how to pan.

  • @Gr1mmReap3rT2 usually pan in most softwares, is [space]+[click]. but usually in 3D softwares, the pan is the "middle mouse button"

the default blender configuration, you pan with [shift]+MMB and rotate around it simply with MMB.

I change my configuration in blender there in "views & controls" the option "middle mouse button: " I set "PAN view" and then you pan with MMB and rotate around it with [shift]+MMB

    I hope it helps

  • @aceofspades02 and by the way...

usually 3Dsoftwares use MMB for navigation. and combining with modifier keys like shift, ctrl, alt you alter the navigation options into zoom, rotate around, pan...

but unfortunatelly this configuration vary from 3Dsoftware to 3Dsoftware, so it is bad for those who use more than 1 3Dsoftware

blender and 3dsmax gives you 1 option, and maya doesn't give an option.

I think as we can set keyboard shortcuts, we could set mouses button too.

    what do you think?

  • @aceofspades02 Yeah that helped, thanks ace. I actually figured the Shift + MMB out when I was reading through all the hotkeys in the help file, which I found more hotkeys I didn't even know of. This is off topic a little but I've been using Metaseqouia for modeling and sending parts to Doga-L3 (so I don't have to use their lame pre-fabs) for like 10 yrs and you use the RMB to rotate in Metaseqoia, so it took FOREVER to get used to rotating with the MMB.

  • @Gr1mmReap3rT2 It may sound funny but I've been using Metaseqouia for SO LONG that I just model something in that, send it to doga, then export from Doga to Blender lol. It's actually pretty cool because every object you name and give materials to in Doga also imports into blender so I don't have to name anything. I can model in Blender, but I'm so much faster in Meta. mainly for robots (Transformers). Whatever Meta. won't allow me to do I just finish it up in Blender.

  • B is for 'BORDER select', and not 'box select'

    and I got a doubt:

at 5:30 wouldn't it be easier, after pressing "Shift+D" (duplicate), to press "M" (mirror) and "X" right after (mirror in X axis) instead of rotate each part manually?

(or it would invert all the axis and it would mess thewhole thing just like 3DSMax does?)

  • i have a mac and whenever i hit one of those numbers it transfers my character to another plane instead of changing the view. is there anything like that for mac on blender?

  • LOL, and what not.

  • where did you get the model?

  • crappy blender 2.5 layout , crAPPY YOUTUBE LAYOUT! WHATS THE WORLD COMING TO?!

  • what if an arm is separated into meny pieces? how would I apply the bone to all pieces of the arm.

  • You can join all your meshed into one by selecting them all and pressing Ctrl+j for "Join"

  • @bugzilla2001 thank you

  • @bugzilla2001

OMG FINALY A RESPONCE ON HOW TO JOIN OBJECTS!!! YEAAA TUMBS IF UUUU!! AGREE!!! :D

  • where do i get the model from?

  • That's a model that came with the sample content for Lightwave. I don't know if it's online somewhere.

  • dowload 'make human' freeware to make easy human models.

  • @xxxjovit no tutorial needed

  • Absolutely perfect tutorial. You covered every possible aspect of (newby) rigging that I could have wanted.

  • hey how do you get that menu on the left side...the one where you can see the parents and stuff?

  • You can drag the panels around and split or join them to make various UI configurations. You can create any kind of layout you like in Blender. Hmmmm... sounds like a good idea for another tutorial.

  • @bugzilla2001 heres some more good ideas, face rig, realisti clothing tutorial.you pretty good,i DL this vid to help me when i get stuck

  • @MrBlenderMan just middle mouse click between the 3d view and the button bar.

  • one of the best tuts I've seen so far. This dude knows how to explain only what's important. ;o

  • at 5m30s instead of duplicating (shift+D) and adjusting everything by hand you could simply duplicate your selection, mirror it and move it into place. The end result is practically the same but you end up with the exact symmetric bone configuration.

  • Hi

    Nice tutorial!

I can't seem to SHIFT+RIGHTCLICK on the bones though any tips?

I can select the current armetures bones but not anothers.

    I'm using blender 2.49a

  • Are u in pose mode?

  • I'm in edit mode, I start by selecting the bone pointing away from the back and press tab to go to edit mode from object mode, then I shift right click the bone part and not the ends - lastly I shift right click the bone part of the right top leg and nothing happens.

I tried this with the left leg top too and other bones like the torse and arms and still no joy.

    Thanks for answering

    Mike

  • Your Shift button must be broken ;p

    I'm really sorry...

    Download the 2.5Alpha0!!!

You can run it without instaling it... You ll have to doo some manipulation with 2.5 save and go back under 2.49!

(but the quicker you get used to 2.5 the better!

It's pretty neet. Current version supposed not to bee stable... I Still can't find a way to crash it!!! Newbies (as i consider my self) are quite safe to use it i think!)

I know this a pretty stupid proposition but it should work!

    Your very welcome!

  • Its a default install in Ubuntu and my shift key works in any other program :(

    Mike

  • report the bug if it is one ;)

  • how do u get and that mode

  • u could also mirror the bones

  • very helpful tutorial. I just started messing with blender and I have to say, the interface is tough, and the learning curve is extreme. Thanx for making it a little bit easier to tackle this beast.

  • You'll be glad you stuck with it when you've used it for as long as I have ;) it's awesome

  • where did he get the model?

  • Lightwave 3D. but it's not free!

  • my armature wont mirror when i press the mirror x axis button. do you kno how to fix it?

  • you character isnt facing the Y axis. rotate the character and try again

  • no, i got it fixed.... i wasnt pressing shift+e

  • Is there another way of not making the mesh deform after rigging it? Like in a charachter that has armor?:P

  • @SlappieBob this is definetly a late reply lol, but I was wondering this myself as I am wanting to rig this character who has like knee pads, shoulder pads, etc. Kinda like S.W.A.T. or something. You probably figured it out by now? XD

  • I know this has been said before, but your tutorials are fantastic and clear. You've made many newbies lives easier!

  • What's the purpose of the split between the small clavicle bone and extra "shoulder bone"?

Excluding the scapula and all that isn't this more like one bone between the spine and upper arm anatomy-wise?

  • Or maybe Im confused and actually the "shoulder bone"is the scapula, just ended up not sized right... the distance of where the clav-scap-joint is really close to the scap-arm joint just that the actual physical scapula bone itself extends back from that point quite a bit.

  • Actually, that's just the way I do it. It's easy to extrude the bones from the neck area like that into the arm area. You could easily get rid of those bones if you wanted since you can paint the weights any way you want.

  • Very nice tutorial, loads of useful tips that have helped me muchly :) Thanks!

  • The very best tutorial I've found so far.Thank you SOOOOO much!

  • are this software just blender 3d?

  • if i am making an elbow or joint, would i be able to make it move like an elbow instead of like a hip or a shoulder with two armature joints? i mean, forward and back but no side to side?

  • When i mirror the x axis at the neck join, as soon as i hit Shitf E if gives me a BIG BONE right down the spine. whats wrong?

  • I just had this problem too. It is because your cursor isn't centered to where you're working. Make sure you're in object mode, select the bone you're working with, press spacebar and go to Transform>Center New. The cursor should now be centered to where you're working, and the X axis mirror will work correctly.

  • if any of u are uncomfortable right clicking instead of left drag down the menu on top that says file add game adn so on then it has a bunch of settings like pan instead of orbit view names and....................... LEFT CLICK INSTEAD OF RIGHT

  • You can change the buttons any way you want.

  • Great, thanks alot. Blender is freakin weird when your coming over from Maya :)

  • i agree...although i never did much in maya. I find blender's interface much more easy to navigate. Plus, maya's better suited for experts.

  • and so your an expert?

  • no. i didn't mean it like that...im no expert in maya. matter of fact i suck in it. blender is easier to me.

  • lol i knwo wat u ment jsut messing with u :-D

  • :) Thanks!

I've always fiddled around in the modeling section. I used the rigging part in an older version of (think 2.30).

When the newer versions came out. :( The menu's had changed and I could no longer do simple rigging.

Now that I've watched this video, I now have a place to start.

  • at 5.45 u can scale by x=(-1) to flip teh legs instead of having to move the joints individually

  • You could have mirrored the leg bones (ctrl - m) instead of rotating them individually. (with the 3d cursor centered (shift - c).

  • Comment removed

  • WOW really clear without a bunch of billg nice things are more clear when you explain them somehow i only saw 1 video so fare hop you got into IK thanks.

  • Because the legs are extruded, they are also parented - First though: Label the bones: Femur.R Tibia.R Foot.R Toe.R Then: Still in edit mode, Put the 3D Cursor on the Center of your X Axis Select all the leg bones, Hit Shift + D, immediately hit ESC Hit Ctrl + M, Hit X, Hit Enter Now you got the Left Leg Bones. With the Left Leg bones still Highlighted, Hit W, Flip L / R Names. Now you have the same bone with different Sides.
  • Thanks a lot for this nice tutorial! Really helpful

  • where can i download it?

  • blender(dot)org

  • great tutorial pretty clear my friend!!

  • fantastic - sooo useful

  • nice tutoral it relly helped me out
