That "gash" is actually a place where the marine mammalogy researchers took blubber and tissue samples. You can see at the very beginning the actual gash from the research vessel about midway down the back of the whale, there is some organ tissue protruding from it by this point.
must smell, i wonder how they're gonna get rid of it
