The music fits perfectly: its the second movement, oftentimes interpreted as a struggle with a lurking danger/death (war), while the first and third movement are triumphant (peacetime/victory). This movement, as used in the movie, is not only reflecting the king's personal struggle, but the people's and britain's situation as well
Colin Firth almost looks to be over acting the stutter in the movie until you compare what he did with the original speech.... amazing. From where you can clearly hear he's struggling to start to a far more fluent ending... wow....
After seeing this film, I appreciate my teacher's work at university showing us original broadcasts of World History's most important events from modern History's most important people. I could relate to all the things he taught us during the semester while watching this movie. Great, and touching.
The King of England: "We are at war." The music is by a composer that Hitler greatly admired above all others. English/British composition would be more appropriate for this moment. Beethoven rocks! But, not during this speech.
Far greater than the music critic - the director cut the last line of "The Speech".
A movie about giving a speech - then he cuts the last line of the original speech.
@58djmax The reason it was chosen for "The King's Speech" and this video is (I think) because this particular movement has a very dramatic battle between major and minor. That is to say that while it was clear that King George VI mastered his speech and was therefore able to lead Britain, one of the darkest moments in human history was upon him. In other words, the triumph of Britain's leader contrasted heavily with Britain's political situation. That's just what I think; I could be wrong.
@58djmax very ignorant words there since his father, george V was infact from a german ducal family...and whats wrong with being german? very streotypical of you to perceive every german is a nazi.
This music as background - is grosslly inappropriate. This is Beethoven -a wonderful German composter. The enemy that the King is addressing - the Nazi - listen to Beethoven as an example of their superiour race (German). It would be better to play a Scottish hymn as one from "the King's people". Oh, by the way - the movie Director cut the last line of the speech - a prayer line spoken by the King in his speech. But, we talking the art of film not facts. Excuse me and God saved the King.
When seeing photos and portraits of handsome and regal-looking George VI, I find it hard to imagine that he is the shy and stammering man that he is described to be. He certainly passed down his good looks to his daughters especially our Queen!
It's very cool. You can hear him clicking his cigarette lighter in background. I guess it's one of those old flint-lit petrol ones. My own father had one too, the sound is very characteristic as is the smell of unburned fuel.
@chockn can you explain how you feel, and could it have been dome differenty ......I have no idea. My grand daddy was a gunner in the Greek islands, he came home a complete non person. and died as such !!
@Bertiemarmite1 i cant explain what could have been done differently because i just objected to somebody that tried to do that. i cannot change the past, nor do i want to speculate. this is the reason why i objected to "ulans" what if games.
the soundtrack is not apropriate for these words. why not elgar or walton or another british composer? i know that music is universal but beethoven is the germanic power "incarnatus". tschüss
@my8miles obviously stupid because he isn't listening to him. this was a war time speech, his first war time speech, my god you fucking idiot, if you dont like this type of stuff then why the fuck did you click on it.
I've seen this film 2 times within a short period. Colin Firth indeed did an excellent job with this, a well deserved award from the Academy. He also looks like a very intelligent and modest man. I like to see when people like him succeeding in what they're doing.
Thanks. Doubtless true. And chances are, even if the BBC were going to run music under the King's speech in the run-up to war with Germany, the last thing they would have chosen was music by Beethoven. Elgar, more likely.
@adliii1953 This is not true. Beethoven was an obvious choice. Beethoven's 5-th was selected as a victory code for the BBC and the British armed service. There can be no greater artist of freedom than Beethoven. He transcends nationality and language.
Apeoftheyear, the bg music is the slow movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony. Don't know if it's on the YouTube clip because they used it in the movie, or if it's in the movie because the BBC played it under the real speech. It doesn't sound as scratchy as the voice does.
It is a great speech and the music gives emphasis. Really the movie just improves this great speech. I wonder if the name of the speech-writer(s) are known.
This is not the movie, the background music is superfluous.
About George - not completley fluent, of course, but if Firth's performance of where he came from was just half realistic, he has gone an amazing way....
Since you all seem to have seen the film, did anyone wonder why "Bertie" didn't just opt to have Mozart or Beethoven playing on his headphones while he read the speech? It would have been flawless, just like that first attempt in Lionel's studio.
Fantastic! Great to hear the original. Would it be possible to reduce the sound levels on the Beethoven towards the end and then repost the video? It's very hard to hear him speaking. Thank you for posting this :-)
@rainmakermjm thats becuase they would obviously do the identical speech in the movie.. the only reason this would sound remotely "identical" would be becuase colin firth is an amazing actor, and did an extraordinary job.

stuttering can really kill the natural flow of a speech. it just becomes a series of words strung together rather than real speech.
i have a suggestion to stutterers, put emotion in your speech and people will not be distracted by the interruptions of the stutter.
